It is proven there is no welfare issue as long as the whip is used correctly, but anyone listening to McCririck on SSN would think those of us who believe the whip is necessary are a bunch of cruel horse beaters.

No doubt McCririck will be appearing on the BBC, etc to further publicise his own belief, but who is putting the case for the defence? Is there anyone putting the case for the defence to the public who can speak eloquently on the subject as James Willoughby has this evening?

I have a shotgun which would put up a good argument against him imo
Report Aviboyd • October 13, 2011 9:47 PM BST
Brough Scott was wheeled out after the National and did a fine job.  You are right George, a balanced debate rather than hysterical McCririck is what's required.

I think anyone giving the alternative view is surplus to requirements as Fat Mac makes an @rse of himself all by himself and nobody really takes him seriously anyway.
Report onlooker • October 13, 2011 11:00 PM BST
Unfortunately ima_mazed66 - They do, take him seriously.

'They' - being the  BBC, Sky and the unaware General Public.

That is why he plies his trade in those arenas - as nobody in racing - like you say - takes him remotely seriously anymore.

How can we - following him 'selling himself' by appesaring on Big Brother CryWife Swap  - and anywhere else that will have him.

A self-serving pocket-liner - proven time after time.
Report ima_mazed66 • October 13, 2011 11:12 PM BST
Even at the time of writing my previous post onlooker I was already thinking along the lines of only those not in the know taking him seriously, but the main reason why I carried on with my post all the same was that those who might at any given time take him serious due to a lack of racing knowledge themselves, are just as unlikely to follow up with interest on any of the points he was making anyway.

How may non-racing people who made a fuss after the Grand National even knew this rule was due to come in this week?

Not many. The BBC live in the world where the one eyed man is king. The sheer ignorance surrounding this whole debate is staggering. Yobs like McCririck are loathsome individuals, who shouldn't be given any airtime as their views have no credibility and are consequently worthless
Report millhouse • October 13, 2011 11:22 PM BST
If those who were given the job of promoting racing knew anything at all about running a PR campaign, then the very first job, in the very first hour of the very first day was to find a way to marginalise him.

That a reactionary, right wing, sexist, self-serving freak show is the first call the media make at times like these does untold damage to the sport, every single time he appears representing it...
Report onlooker • October 13, 2011 11:27 PM BST
He is an absolute embarrassment - even to himself.

Too arrogant to realise that, though.

totally agree. It's so blatant. Why isn't anyone doing something to stop this tw@t appearing on tv as an apparent ambassador/representative/spokesperson of horseracing. It wouldn't happen in any other professional sport where millions of ponds are involved and livelyhoods are at risk.

He should hang his head in shame.ATR want boycotting for letting this loathsome cretin spout his ill informed tripe on a regular basis on what is supposed to be a dedicated racing channel. If racing wants to change it should start with getting rid of ill informed chauvinstic idiots like mccririck from its media platforms

Report GEORGE.B • October 13, 2011 11:35 PM BST
The solution to McCririck is simple. He must never be allowed near NH racing again. If he believes using an air-cushioned whip is 'cruel' then surely he must believe asking a horse to risk its life jumping an obstacle at speed is also 'cruel'.

I doubt many horses have died being hit with an air-cushioned whip - but how many thousand have died jumping fences over the years?

If he ever accepts payment for his views on NH racing then he is an absolute hypocrite - as is Francome.

I will be going out of my way to put this to them at every opportunity.

Let's see what their views are when it has the potential to hit them in the pocket.

A self-serving pocket-liner - proven time after time.

I second that. He is quite grotesque and does nothing but damage the sport he pretends to love (but in fact just milks dry - see my rant elsewhere about his views on a Saturday festival).
Report millhouse • October 13, 2011 11:39 PM BST
All it would take is for the BHA to sign up Hislop, or Cunningham or someone presentable and cogent, make them a media ambassador for racing, and point the media in their direction every time they need an independent viewpoint, sounbite or opinion.

Eventually the serious media will realise that informed comment from a proper journalist makes for far better news coverage than a one man pantomime, imo...

How much longer do the racing public have to listen to utter nonsense that comes out of this man McCririck. The novelty of the loud mouth and fancy dress costumes wore off a long long time ago.He brings absolutely NOTHING to horse racing as Barney Curley told him live on ATR he is a 'take out merchant' who courts attention just to justify his money. He is the past not the future like the new crop of presenters coming through on ATR and RUK who are very professional. McCririck's time has gone and we the punters should tell his employers that his nonsense is no longer acceptable and he is damaging the sport we love for the sake of personal wealth.
Report R Carver • October 13, 2011 11:49 PM BST
At times like this, I take solace from remembering Barney Curley destroy him ('i saved your bacon' 'yes, yes' ... 'you dont know anything about racing' 'i dont say i do' .... 'what have you contributed to racing? you're one of these take-out merchants, take out all you can').
Report duffy • October 13, 2011 11:51 PM BST
you have to cringe when you hear him say things like" hughes hands in his license because he isn't allowed to hit the horses as much as he wants too" mccririck is just feeding the hysteria surrounding all this.

one thing is slightly clearer now......it appears that the jocks were under the impresson that the 7 strikes were anywhere in the race...and the only 5 in the final furlong was sprung on them.....you have to wonder though as to darleys performance in all this.

what will happen imo is that the flat boys will be told that the 7 can now be used at any point in the race.....the trouble is though, the jumps boys are going to come along and want their own consession....where they'd be already using up some mid race (on some horses at least) anyhow.

finally, hughes's stance has changed significantly really, because earlier in the week we were being told that the frequency allowed was fine but the punishment for transgression was too harsh....but now he is actually saying that the frequency allowed, itself is making his job impossible to do.
Report ima_mazed66 • October 13, 2011 11:54 PM BST
Someone was asking on here a while ago how did Barney Curley save McCririck's bacon and apparently he (Fat Mac) ran up gambling debt in the early 80s when he worked for the Sporting Life and Curley negotiated on his behalf with the bookies for him to pay it back, so as not to be warned off.

Very well put zilzal1.
Regretfully, TV, radio & all other media outlets court controversy & shock stories above all else.
The reasoned, well balanced debates from experts in their field do not matter a jot, and are not heard unless you are an insomniac like me who listens to Radio 4 through the night.
Sleep well.
