I'd rather finish 2nd the pick up a ban GrinDevilLaugh

believe it or not . . by Stuart Ripley
Racingpost.com

who on Tuesday said he'd rather finish second than pick up a ban, became the latest jockey to transgress the new whip rules, when he received a five-day ban at Kempton for his fourth on Ghostwriting in the 1m conditions stakes.

Natalia Gemelova and Pat Cosgrave both fell foul of the new rules at Lingfield on Wednesday afternoon. The latest breaches follow those of Richard Hughes and Kieren Fox who picked up bans on Monday, the opening day of the new regime.

The rules stipulate that Flat jockeys can strike their mounts seven times during a race and just five times inside the final furlong, roughly half the number of times allowed under the previous guidelines.

Buick,  the second high-profile victim, was penalised for striking his horse eight times. Gemelova and Cosgrave picked up bans of seven days and five days respectively for infringements at Lingfield.

Cosgrave, who struck Marcus Antonius on eight occasions when finishing second in the 2m handicap (5.10), said: "I didn't think I was in breech of the rules as I didn't go for my whip early and I thought I'd given him seven, that's why I stopped."

He added: "Obviously, things were tight, but it wasn't the sort of race worth getting a ban in so I put my whip down.

"You have a lot to think of in the closing stages, you're trying to count, ride your race and at the same time avoid causing any interference."

Jim Boyle, trainer of Marcus Antonius added: "From what I hear the eighth strike hit Steve Drowne on the arm and didn't hit my horse anyway. The sanctions on the jockeys are ludicrous. What's he meant to do let him hang into the other horse?"

Although Gemelova remained within the seven-strike limit, all were administered inside the final furlong, while Cosgrave resorted to the whip on eight occassions. The punishments include the loss of riding fees and any share of prize-money.

Gemelova, who has not had winner from 34 previous rides over 197 days, made the journey to Lingfield from North Yorkshire for one ride in divison two of the claimer (3.00). It proved to be an expensive day for the 3lb apprentice who finished second on the John Long-trained 33-1 shot For Life.

Agent and valet fees along with travel costs and the loss of earnings will hit Gemelova's pocket. The devastated rider said: "I am trying my best to ride within the rules but it's harder than you think."

Without wishing to appear somewhat cynical ...

Excellent News - in a way.

Presumably Paul Struthers took his phone of the hook tonight.

Reducing the horse racing industry to farce. They must be laughing at us in France and Ireland. Punters wont be laughing, nor will the jockeys.

Nothing to do with the whip, 9 jockeys banned today but how lucky was the one that looked unlucky in the first place. Tom Messenger on Chis Bealby's 5/1 Glory Be left at the start ShockedLaugh Tom Messenger said it wouldn't have mattered if it started he wouldn't have got a ban anyway, he knew what a yellow flag meant Devil

Have any results been amended because of the new rules? And how long did the stewards take?

Just thinking about first-past-the-post and amended result payouts. Confused

Bookies potentially cursing the move, no?

I have been watching all the racing this week, its become a farce, It is now no better than VIRTUAL nonsense.
I have been betting more than 50 years when I was only six,and in  only three days I am rapidy loosing interest.

All present form is out of the window. I could not make any bet with confidence. What have they done? CLOWNS

No Veridis that wont happen. No result will be affected. The stewards only ban the jockeys between 5-15 days (depending on the offence)and a fine (Jockey's fees and precentage of winning) and if they find out that either the trainer/owner has paid the jockey the fine they will be disqualified from 1-3 years.

Teddy I'm with you. It's nearly predictable to watch now. Whatever is in the first 3 going inside the final furlongs are staying there. Not too many coming with strong late runs. Anyone that doesn't think they will get in the first 3 without resorting to the whip just put their reins down and freewheel home. Richard Hughes was at it all day yesterday. The only one he give a tap to was the horse that led all the way and it was 5 lenghts clear when he tapped it.

Somebody asked for a price on R Hughes for the jockey's Title, the other day.

Their reasoning was .... "remember last year - and he's only 20 odd behind."

He must be 'a million' now. Laugh

Quite right AD. The fallout from this will be massive. Even Betfair must wake up to it, it is forced to affect in running betting.
BHA are power mad, look at Wetherby today, what a farce.
Are they still going to ban them for not riding out a finish? It brings the whole game into disrepute
We might see a race where  Jockey gets banned for over use of whip, and in the same race race a jockey gets banned for not riding out a finish.

Jockeys are supposed to have asked for the rules on the whip to be changed and the

penalties for those breaking them to be harsher and that was a commendable attitude

for riders to take but sadly some of the new rules seem to me as just stupid, the

penalties draconian and the stoppage of riding fees and percentages of winnings

outrageous.  If Jockeys were consulted and agreed to these conditions being implemented

I will be gobsmacked, talk about Turkeys voting for Xmas.

abandon the seizure of riding fees and issue of bans....

.... and replace with simple disqualification instead, like trotting races.

Some of the bans handed out already very marginal, da Sousa, Hughes and Buick for example.

Jocks are right, how can you concentrate on ridng and everything going on in a finish when you counting 1-elephant, 2-elephant, 3-elephant..........

I've been told don't expecting too many top names to be riding around AW gaffs during the summer. It's now obvious that the smaller tracks a couple of weeks before the big meetings like The Guineas, Derby, Royal Ascot, Glorius Goodwood, etc are going to be the losers on this. I can't see Moore or Dettori heading to the likes of catterick or Bath 2 weeks before the big meetings.

That could be a 'Result', Anaglogs..... Get rid of those meetings.

Why do we need(?) such All-Weather meetings, "during the summer," anyway?

pedrobob, stop talking compleate nosence, SIMPLE DISQUSLICATION, the sort of sugestion that a simpleton would come up with. great the bookis are going to pay out on disqualified winners and placed and the pay out again on the altered result, so we do away with there petty catchment, on the other hand, they could change that rule, excluding the ones who get through out, when a jockey breaks that whip rule, our go back to the original rules, that the new rules the bookies introduced, so the punters winning cash did not set in limo, for up to 30 to 40 mins, while the stewards decided the outcome of an inquiry ect, and as for what Alan Jarvis, said the other day, when his horse was 2nd to O Boy, when Harry Bentley, was give days under the new rules, the winner shoud have been diqualified, i wonder if the boot was on the other foot or his horse got disqualified, would he have said that, "i doubt it very much", and what Ferdie Murphy said into days RP, i could only laugh, Ferdie at a calculted guess, holds by far the record for horses PU, in the run up to the spring of evey year, sence he has trained under his own name, and the Phonsie O'Brien, farce, i know there is many trainers who dont like there horses hit at home, only when needed, i wonder if Phonsie our Ferdie, give the same instruction to there jockeys when the cash is down!!!!!!!!!!!! i doubt it very much, HYPOCRITERS, i would say, they would be asking there jocks if beat, why did you not give him/her a good crack, I COULD BE WRONG, COULD.
