I was under the impression that the new whip rules would only affect jockeys - until in todays post I read Mark Prescotts opinion that the winner should be thrown out if a jockey breaks the rules on whip abuse

This seems a reasonable opinion, in that a winner by a nose who has been whipped too often, mostly, would not have won - therefore the 2nd should be granted the race under these rules  -  following on from that an IR nightmare could ensue

So, having only 'heard' of the new whip rules, can any 'expert' confirm the above is or is not possible?

woould need to employ 100s of stewards at racecourseCool

imagine people waiting in line to be paid on-course bookie--only to wait to see if jockey has whipped horse less then 6 times

No - NOT disqualified under new rules. ....

- and such an action would not just hit 'in-running' betting -

It would kill ALL betting on horse racing STONE DEAD.

The way round it onlooker, would be to keep the result for betting purposes only.

thanks for clarification onlooker  -  does not seem logical though and will definitely be hard for jockeys to decide how hard to try for the owner/trainer, and how not to try too hard for the stewards !!

Yes dan - If only they had done that with Mr Confusion's Magnet Cup win ...

When, after being disqualified for effectively nothing - he was re-instated as the winner, the following Friday, at Portman Square.

------------------------------------

This was the day ...

Would you have a Monkey, or a Grand, on a horse - to then have to 'sweat it out' EVERY BET, as to whether the horse was going to be disqualified due 8 slaps instead of 7...

- especially if/as it became debatable as to whether one, or two, of those movements were only direction corrections (in the interests of safety - yet now, perversely, potentially punishable.

PLENTY punters most certainly would NOT bet under such circumstances.

The LEVY would be decimated even further.

It would be like those awful days of the early 1990s -
When the military minded moguls at the Jockey Club tried to get the jockeys to ride in straight lines throughout the race.

There were STEWARDS ENQUIRIES every other race.

One Magnet Cup day at York - there were SIX Stewards Enquiries out of 7 races.

Channel4 were going mad because each successive race was delayed by these Enquiries.

Bookmakers were going barmy because they could not take bets on each race, as punters belatedly queued to collect winnings.
Eventually all the Bookies declared ... 'Pay after the next race'* - so that they could take bets on this race.

Punters were apoplectic - because some wanted their winnings from one race to bet on the next - but could not draw in time.

Eventually, at a later stage - Andrew Franklin of Channel4 Racing arranged a meeting with the Stewards to 'clear the air'

The first thing that they said to him was.... "Franklin, take your hands out of your pockets."

- and you want to place your Monkey or Grand at the behest of these STEWARDS.

'nuff said'.
