I think most people (outside of the press) appreciate this stable is a punting nightmare but what exactly does he do for his chief owner?
Yes, he doesn't get the pick but it is an embarassment of riches compared to most trainers and most of them are lucky if they win a mediocre maiden.
The idea of running horses every few days on ground that may not suit over a trip that may not suit seems completely at odds with what we see from Godolphin.
It would be very interesting to see what would happen if we saw the green and red silks dispersed to a few other stables in a similar move to what Dr Koukash has done with his string.
I agree that this stable is a complete nightmare to follow. Is it because with the huge numbers he has in training its just like factory farming/training. I believe he has managers specifically in charge of the various yards/runs it like a factory. Where is the individual attention these horses require. He cannot possibly have the time to supervise the numbers in training.Awful. Its all about turnover and filling boxes, shame because he can atually train, but the numbers involved,no danger!!!

Johnston's a prat doesn't consider punters to be relevant to the game when in fact we're the lifeblood...send him on a slow boat to china with Capello..........!

Mark Johnston probably has the biggest range of ability of horses in his yard than any other trainer in the UK but because he had success at the top end of the game, then whenever he has runners at the dregs end his horses are over bet and sometimes given more attention than they actually deserve based on his reputation.
How many classic winning trainers run their horses in claimers, sellers and with such regularity on the AW? If he charges the same to train a Gr1 winner as he does to a selling plater then he's not going to turn away the selling plater owners, no matter how poor their horses might be. I dare say some of his smaller owners have been with him long before the Arabs got involved with his yard and so he will want to retain them anyway.
Add to that that he mainly has the Arabs' 2YOs and or the son's horses so as soon as he unearths a good one, they then find their way to Godolphin anyway and so he's not really likely to train too many top notch level ones for them.

well written ima -allI ever see is complaints about Johnston from punters who "cannot follow the stable" - that is easy to rectify - "leave his Horses alone". He fulfils his purpose for his employers and that is why he continues to enjoy their patronage, as to his methodology He is a 21st century trainer with a 21st century approach.

Henry Cecil is the only trainer I can recall having horses taken off him by the
big Arab owners, they appear to be ultra loyal to the staff they employ
Their first trainer was John Benstead and he was sent horses yearly till the day
he retired or died.

The OP's point wasn't about the Johnston yard being a punting nightmare(which it obviously is). Instead he questioned what the trainer delivers for his chief owner! You may be right that Johnston fulfils his purpose - loads of wins in handicaps and low grade maidens - but I'd have thought that both Johnston and the owner were a tad more ambitious than that....

Gerry, Johnston is a dour person who runs his operation in a business like way, when he was young and
probably more ambitious he freely admits to writing to shake mo and co asking to be given the chance to
train for them, a wish that was eventually granted, fair play to Johnston he has constantly toed the line
when he has had to give up his decent horses to Godolphin, a loyal company man which I imagine goesw down
well with the Godolphin hierarchy.

I agree that Johnston runs his operation as a business. To use a 'high street' analagy though, he's selling Primark quality but charging M&S prices.
Unless he improves the quality of the races he wins and the consistency with which the horses in his care run, there will come a point where Johnston's customer(s) tells him to poke it imo.
