Diverse indeed jimnast,my last post was a tongue in cheek reference to recent events but nevertheless the George Washington debacle shows how memories live on.

My worst was that amazing mare Dawn Run dying in France,a death that should never have occurred. Her owner was a greedy bastard who did not deserve her,she should have been in foal in a paddock.[>o][>o]

George Washington was a huge loss to the breed, a Guineas winning miler by Danehill who also happened to be the best looking and most charasmatic horse in training.

I was only yards from Best Mate when he collapsed and died at Exeter.
Paul Carberry was trotting him back after he was pulled-up in the race,
all of a sudden he began to stagger and Carberry jumped off him straight away
when he began to wobble. About 10 mins before he had won the 'best turned out' award.
A memorial stone marks now the spot the other side of the fence where he died.

Been a few mate, but Dawn Run for me was the most repulsive act of greed ever perpetrated on an animal,a foal would have brought more than a win in France but the bastard wanted both.[>o]

Won a couple of hundred quid on the Tote at Haydock. Paid out in twenties, just happened to check them and most were forgeries went back to same cashier and ask for different money as I was suspicious of the money she looked at and said it was OK.Had a fancy in the next race so went back to the same window and gave her back all the dodge money, you should have seen her face.she knew dam well the money was iffy, a child could have spotted it, she must have been waiting all afternoon to get rid of it. Luckily the horse was placed so I collected my wining from a different window.

That was a good result George,a mate of mined passed several dodgy notes he had taken in his takings.
His horse won and the best part of £1,500 was returned from the bookie,at least £800 in moodies and he had only passed about £60 in his stake.CryCry

Also agree about Dawn Run that was very sad especially after those scenes at Cheltenham,
JonJo got cancer, and why the hell was Dawn Run sent over to France for that race anyway !
(Don't know it for fact, but I heard the owner didn't even pay for Dawn Run to be flown back home, she was left in France. Would have been nice for her to be buried at Cheltenham like Red Rum at Liverpool. She deserved that.)

December 2002, Ascot, Ladbroke Hurdle.

Was on Whistling Dixe to win a nice Christmas bonus. It was foggy, and part of the home straight wasn't visible. Dixie was pulling double in second up the straight looking like the race was in the bag, then the fog came, and when the horses appeared at the last hurdle, Dixie wasn't there anymore, he'd fallen though I didn't know at the time.

Gutted, was like a Bermuda Triangle experience.

Went to Tweseldown PTP, the first meeting on a Sunday in the UK at which bookies were allowed to operate. The place was seriously overcrowded, absolutely heaving, and one poor old boy collapsed in the betting ring. Unbelievably, bookies carried on taking bets and punters carried on punting, all within a couple of feet of the prostrate guy - just like it was the most normal thing in the world. It was reported in the next day's Racing Post that the old boy had died.

At that same meeting, in the first race and at the very first fence, a horse fell, breaking its neck in the process. A pretty hideous day all round tbh.

Pennekamp in the Derby. I had at the time the biggest bet of my life on it. As well as Ante Post bets on it from the first time I saw him run at Evry. As well as it being the last leg of doubles and trebles. Another "Moment of Clarity" from yours truly. That was a right kick in the bollicks. Then a ticket from the Train Inspector as I had lost my return ticket, three hours with the wonderful BTP and to top it off found out ex girlfriend had cheated on me. I loved that animal. Almost as much as I loved Istabraq. Funny how we can get so attached...

Have to agree with Alain Charnier and Zilzal1

Buckfast Abbey sliding down the hill after falling at the fence.
Probably due to the dramatic Chelt camera angles, never seen a horse look so helpless.

Poppy....I remember that, horrible. Was in the "Mackeson/Massey Ferguson" I think.

My worst moment was Wishbone in the Scottish National, crashing fall right in front of me, was running a big race for an outsider as well.

Fortunately for me I have never seen a horse killed on the racecourse and thats having been to Cheltenham, Aintree a few times and quite a few others, both codes. Remember Hedgehunter falling at the last in his first National, I feared the worst.

As most people on here,i can relate muliple worst moments from a punting perspective, like valiramix, various disqualifications over the years,Court in motion jumping the last perfectly well at exeter when clear[cost me dear]and 2 strides later slipping up on flat.

The one that takes the biscuit was proudwing fpp in jacques le marois disqualified for'hampering'a beaten placed horse at deauville.

Had told a good friend who asked me for tips and never backed them when i was in purple patch.
Apologised to him, saying how unlucky we were and he hadn'nt put a penny on.

I never 'tip' selections unless i'm asked, one bloke in particular i never tell him, cause he's biggest jinx in world.

I have never witnessed it before or after where a loose horse has run into another head-on. This happened at Fontwell circa 1974/5 where Anthony Wates was leading on Indian ? round the bottom bend when a loose horse going the opposite way crashed head-on into them.  Wates broke his leg and both horses were killed instantly.

Quite a few years back me, my dad and uncle had all done all brains at fontwell, walking across the track back to the car a £20 blows right into the old mans trouser hem, the last race was a bumper the old man says im having it on the outsider of the field 50/1 chance, was trained by either m. pitman or b de haan. Me and the uncle sit in the car freezing cold and soaking wet feeling sorry for ourselves, the horse only goes and wins we're going mad in the car all got our dough back. Along comes the old man 10 minutes later with 3 bags of chips i couldn't bring myself to do it he says. He was always a fav mug punter but i loved him, been gone a few years now.

The Buckfast Abbey tragedy for me. it wasn't at the top of the hill but at the 3rd last on the old course. In the Mackeson, I think.

But he didn't die in vain. After that terrible incident the Cheltenham Executive had the landing side of the 3rd last leveled and the fence has been very safe since then.
