Harbinger was a late developing machine, how anyone can knock the form is beyound me? must be one of the better older horses of all time,he crucified workforce (who won the arc). Yes hindsight is a great thing but it is just a reflection or theory of no meaning.Harbinger was happennig at that point in time you cannot compare with previous generations he was awesome.

That said i understand what you mean about ratings at times looking on the high side, but how should you rate a arc with several european derby winners of different generations? It is all about opinions!

Seeing as I know nothing about the flat I won't comment on that one and Grand Crus agreed was ridiculous, I backed it e/w prior to the Knockara Beau race and after that knew he could not touch Big Bucks. Laid off short in the World. Now Master Minded I don't think you can knock because it is the performance that deserved the rating maybe not the horse as he's never repeated it but you cannot argue with the performance, time or anything about it. On that day in those conditions he was the best horse I've ever seen. Carvills in the Welsh National is probably the only comparable in my betting career. Kauto's win that everyone raves about in the KG whilst visibly impressive had too many holes in it. I could go into it for ages but just watch the race over and over and you'll note how so many of the opposition just had nightmares.

Ribot, Royal Palace, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dahlia, Grundy, Troy, Shergar, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Generous, Lammtarra, Montjeu, Hurriance Run..........
Amazing to think that of all those outstanding winners of the King George, only Grundy got within 10 lengths of Harbinger on the clock. And the likes of Petoski, Teenoso, King's Theatre, Galileo, Azamour, Duke Of Marmalade and Conduit would have been beaten by 5 lengths +...... |

Rondetto,I have sympathy with your viewpoint but the handicapper had no option but to rate it so highly.
If the horse had never been seen before no one would argue with the rating, take Harbinger out and the result looks ok except for Workforce. The time was very good and from the betting in the previous week it seemed that something special was expected of him.You know the rating is too high,I know it is too high but the book says it is ok. ![]() Master Minded I am not sure about the rating but he was very ,very good that day. |

'Ryan Moore, who is no mean judge chose to ride Workforce'
There is no place for comments like this in the rating of racehorses. |
