Worked my first racecourse pitch on sunday and i had got a big Betfair umbrella but found out it wasnt allowed on the rails and i had to get a smaller square one.
Anyone know where you get these types of umbrellas?I have asked the purple place and im hopefull they might accomodate me but need to get one before the 15th.

only part time desparate bookmakers use umbrellas advertising opposition,

the smaller square type can be bought for about a monkey,

ask for a number of peter who supplies them, not got a recent number.
Report ribero1 • October 4, 2011 11:17 AM BST
is peter still going? think you may have to go to securit if you don't want advertising.

Barry **** and Betfair arnt opposition?????????I use their services when im working oncourse so i dont see your point.
If im honest i dont really care whether it advertises an exchange(not other bookies) or not as long as it keeps us dry and complies with the rules at the end of the day its only an umbrella but it is needed.

Any of yous have securits website address?

You're all laying straight off on betfair anyway so you might as well have the free umbrella with all that commission you guys pay.
Report adge • October 4, 2011 12:52 PM BST
when you're the same price as the exchange what is gained by paying any commission, xoxo ?

It's a wind-up.

betfair and **** don't do square rails umbrellas to my knowledge.
the sole english agent seem to be securit [ hence the amazing cost ]

do the irish firm still do them ?

Adge is correct, Securit are the only ones that do the normal square ones

Jim Carver does do some square ones too, email him at

I noticed you on Sunday with that mush however who said you had to have a square one?
If it was the ring busy, has he the right to stop you betting?
I may be wrong but I thought it was the racecourse who said whether we can stand or not,not the A.G.T.(Goodwood main meeting this year)
I wonder if the racecourses are aware of this rule & whether they would stop anyone from working because they did not have the correct shape mush?
Surely the Associations should take this up with the racecourses themselves & ask the courses quite simply, have they(the racecourses)got any ruling on this.If so would they stand a bookie down if he didn't comply with the square shaped mush rule?If they (the courses) haven't a rule then why are the A.G.T.telling bookies they must have these mushes if they want to work on the rails?
As said earlier there's only one firm supplies these mushes.
Report adge • October 4, 2011 2:51 PM BST
if you believe the ring managers it seems whether a bookmakers umbrella is the the correct design or not taken down etc it is clearly their most important duty during the day.
if , in twelve months time when the agt lose their income from sales / auctions etc i'm sure the racecourses will take more interest
Report intheknow • October 4, 2011 2:51 PM BST
allpoints - I don't agree with the ruling regarding square mushes on the Rails but I think the obscure reference to it is in the ruling of the Special Conditions E that bookmakers agree to when signing at the badge box

The wording relates to using joint & equipment to the specification agreed between the RCA and bookmaker associations.

So whether we agree with it or not, you should use a square umbrella on the rails.

It would be nice if post Sep 2012 this was removed but don't have your bank on it . . .

Decades ago  -I had a biggish bet on a hotshot -around 8/13- on a Sat at Ascot . Fav was duly cruising along in the lead down the farside when someone standing inside the rail ostentatiously opened an umbrella about 5 yards before a fence. This distracted the leader who spooked and fell . The post race analysis picked it up and I think the jockey confirmed it as well.
Never forgot that incident --probably changed the whole course of my life . LaughSadShockedPlain

What you say is exactly the point I'm raising.Agreement between the Bookmakers Assosiations & the R.C.A.
Not some dreamt up rule invented by the A.G.T.
I wonder if the R.C.A. are actually aware of this rule.Personally I would query if they are aware of the rule & I certainly cann't see them standing someone down for not using a square mush on the rails. Are they going to throw revenue away because of the shape of a mush?
Report intheknow • October 4, 2011 3:40 PM BST
The AGT are just applying the rules that are there in place between the RCA & Bookmaker associations.

I would say that they are aware of the rule as they would have agreed all those that are in the Special Conditions E.

I don't agree with the ruling but have queried it many times and always been pointed to the Special Conditions E.

You are unlikely to get this rule changed especially as there are far more important things going on at the moment. So best be like me and take it on the chin and just accept it Sad

Listen never once did i say i dont mind advertising the opposition(i dont see exchanges as opposition i see them as a tool i can use to my convinence).
Also i have no problem purchasing one the problem i had was finding where to purchase one as noone seemed to be able to point me to who makes them.
Oldandwise it was not a wind up i have been a member since 2008 and did work my first racecourse pitch on sunday at Kelso.

Intheknow thankyou very much for your help i will contact Securit and see if i can get one from them.

Anyone who has actually worked on the Rails and stood next to someone using a standard Tatts brolly will know the problem and can offer an informed opinion.

In brief, they are far too big for the limited space provided.
The owner may keep his pitch dry but you get wet standing next to them.

Agt will issue a warning letter to offenders who i believe have 28days  to purchase a new one.

I am not a jobs worth peron by nature but on this issue i fully support AGT.

whats the reason everything is so tight on the rails so we need to use these useless little rails brollies.

Believe it is an historic thing, they all seem to have limited space.  Heard a story that the guy who approved them was a tiny fella.  Should have been Big Jim or Gal
