He will be coming back next year to win the Derby, after a hurdling campaign through the winter. They've decided to go straight over fences, and to ignore a novice campaign, and go for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. They fear the 3m3f trip may too short though, so we might see him in the grand national afterwards.

so why were they on about him going for the derby 2011?

They changed their minds and saw sense.

Traditionally horses step up in trip as they get over, and connections felt as though 12 furlongs would be too soon for him this year, so going for the 2012 race
Report 11kv • October 2, 2011 10:22 PM BST
Champion Hurdle imo

might be a bit young yet though
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 2, 2011 10:23 PM BST

yes pal i think if he reproduces his form he'll win easily but u never know! the others need him to underperfom to win!

Report RyanWe • October 2, 2011 10:31 PM BST
Well he is a beast of a horse, just a shame that he's worth wayyyyy too much money to be ever seen near a hurdle, let alone a fence.
Report Far From Trouble • October 2, 2011 10:34 PM BST
Champion Bumper then?
Report salmon spray • October 2, 2011 10:34 PM BST
If he met with an unfortunate accident involving his genitalia then he could make a great jumper imo.
Report paulme • October 2, 2011 10:36 PM BST
have any horses won big races on flat AND over jumps?
Report 11kv • October 2, 2011 10:36 PM BST

Report OnTheSnaff • October 2, 2011 10:58 PM BST
Yes,was delighted to get a good run for my money gt,thought he had it turning for home Cry
Strange run by WF,though cleary something wrong with the horse as cleary wasnt his running
Report rscaughtboy • October 2, 2011 11:03 PM BST
Just the relentless pace caught him and others out imo OTS,wasnt the usual late sprint, solid sectionals. He got hampered similar to Sarafina last year but would never have won in a million years, ditto the others.Cry

SYT was nice result but ran a good race just the same, being re-named for a US campaign So You Thought.Laugh

To go back to the question about horses winning big races on the flat
Royal Gait won The Champion Hurdle 4 years after being disqualified after passing the post first in The Ascot Gold Cup.
There aren`t that many because historically geldings were excluded from practically all the big flat w-f-a races. Brown Jack won The Champion Hurdle and The Queen Alexandra Stakes ( several times ) when the latter was considerably more prestigious. A bit later Trelawny won the same flat race and the Spa Hurdle, which was the rather less prestigious forerunner of the World/Stayers Hurdle. The 61 St Leger winner Aurelius was very good over both fhurdles and fences after proving sterile, but I don`t think he won a REALLY big race.
Report paulme • October 2, 2011 11:12 PM BST
im not an aussie but Black Caviar is amazing. when we gonna see him taking on our Frankel? maybe next years Grand National?
Report rscaughtboy • October 2, 2011 11:13 PM BST
Stable had him spot on OTS,molerat has been watching for weeks, said he was best he had seen him,so a mystery. However I couldnt see anything wrong with him,SMS looked well peed off though.

Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 2, 2011 11:43 PM BST
nothing as good as canford here imo.

excellerbration might give him a race for awhile but frankel travels so fast and does it so easily hes difficult to lay up with mid race!

In a recent interview with Matt Champman, Cecil said he didn't feel Frankel mas mature enough to win the "Triple Crown" this year but with another 12 months on his back he will be hoping to take in the Guineas again as well as the Derby and St Ledger in 2012.

At the end of the Interview Champman asked Cecil if he thought there was any chance of Frankel staying in training as a 5 year old and this is what Cecil said - "I'm really not sure...you know. What do you think? The Prince is a super owner and he's never had the winner of the Kentucky Derby. Nothing is set in stone at this stage but I think a tilt at the 2013 American "Triple Crown" is a definite possible...you know. Of course that won't be easy with the likes of Uncle Mo, Goldikova and The Tattling possibly taking part so we will have to see. A lot of water will have passed under the bridge between now and then...what do you think?"
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 3, 2011 12:05 PM BST
frankel was fav for his maiden based on homework/breeding/who trained him and his enteries so he was obviously good!

harbour watch is a good horse but wont stay a mile imo.

Could run Frankel in Irish Leger next year. Had forgotten about The Tatling for the national which should have been obvious to everyone. I reckon he would be warming up just after the elbow and would sail home from here. What with practically no whips allowed now anything could win the National.
Report Millerracing67 • October 3, 2011 4:10 PM BST
Oh dear!! Paulme i hope u only bet horses for fun, if not your name will soon change 2 Poorme! Frankel is 1 of the best millers we have seen and all being well with him, will win the QE11. If it came up soft the French filly Immortal Verse could make a race of it. As for Frankel running in the Arc, i would be amazed if he got that trip. He will hopefully get 10fs and take in most of the top races at that dist next season. Only 3yo colts & fillys can run in the Derby. As for top flat horses winning over jumps, Sea Pigeon, Royal Gait and Kribensis all won good flat races and all won the Chmp Hdle.
