Arc Meeting is on and why is he not showing off his skills in Paris ?

When there is a Gr1 meeting you often see him riding at Catterick or Redcar.

Not saying he is a bad jockey , only not deserving of the title of champion jockey.Look at previous champs like  Eddery , Roberts , Dettori , Fallon, Darley ? , Spencer.... they had all won multiple Gr1 but Hanagan hasn't even won a Uk Gr1 or a classic yet.

Even T Eaves and J Crowley are in Paris.

Paul a great jockey it is  the game that is changed in the way the top jockey used to get first choice of the best horses.
Report Darren Lamb • October 2, 2011 12:34 PM BST
paul hanagan is far from a 'great' jockey, as is ludicrously staged above.

I think he has potential to go forward become a decent Gr1 jockey. K Fallon was a similar age before he got his break with H Cecil. Before that he was doing handbrake jobs for Mrs Ramsden in class F handicaps.

Someone on the Sunday Forum made the point that (presumably) Hanagan wasn't offered the ride on Sea Moon in the St Leger. Stoute would rather bring in a foreign jockey (albeit one who rode Harbinger) rather than put up the current champion who has ridden a stack of winners at Donny.

The general point being that he's not seen as a go-to jockey for the big races, even if the big trainers are happy to put him up on steering jobs at the likes of Hamilton.

From what i have seen over the last few years we have a exellent crop of jocks on the flat and jumps. P Hanagan is one of them and a great pro who makes very few mistakes in races. As for compairing to the likes of Eddery, Dettori, Moore and so on, thats a bit unfair. All of these top jocks have had top trainers and retainers in there time in racing. I would have no probs with Hanagan on my fancy in a G1 race and in the G1 Lagardere last year on Wooton Bassett (which i had a gd bet on) he road them 2 sleep. Exellent jock in my book.

comical thread. hanagan isn't in the top 5 riding in the UK.
Report Ramruma • October 2, 2011 2:05 PM BST
Epsom, June: Fallon was jocked off by a High Court Judge.

Neither Hanagan nor Hughes, who fought out last season's championship, was asked to replaced him. Smullen got the call-up.
Report flyingbolt • October 2, 2011 2:08 PM BST
He seems to be at the top of the top 5 at the moment imo.Mischief.

Hanaghan seems to ride fewer poor races than most.

I don't think the standard of flat jockeys is that great at the moment.
Unlike NH where we are coming towards the end of a golden age of jockeys although worryingly there doesn't seem to be too many likely top notchers waiting in the wings.
Report flushgordon1 • October 2, 2011 2:16 PM BST
its easier to ride group 1 horses which can quicken like a ferrari than to ride one which has the accelleration of a kia picanto at catterick.
good horse make good jockeys.
would say jason mc guire will take up mc coys mantle in the near future.

What's brought this thread on erhaab. Did Hanagan get beat on one you backed? He can't be that bad. He was champ last season, and is fav again ths season. Darren Lamb has basically named the jockeys who ride for the top stables in UK. Until he rode for a top stable for a season or two, riding group horses every week we will never know. Load of sh!te fred imo Sad
Report penzance • October 2, 2011 8:23 PM BST
given the right horse I'm sure he'd get the job done.
Report sageform • October 2, 2011 8:39 PM BST
Hanagan is very loyal to the yards who use him regularly as is De Sousa. They will ride at the northern meetings most of the time and both dominate there. Trainers who have horses good enough to run at Longchamp but don't retain a top jockey will naturally go for the likes of Dettori who know the course well. It is chicken and egg though and Buick has shown that experience of the course is not essential to success.
Report doantwin2easy • October 2, 2011 9:29 PM BST
PH is a very good jockey who makes very few mistakes. The fact remains he is a northern based jockey by luck or design, and, with a couple of notable exceptions, most owners and breeders don't send their blue blood north of the border making it hard for northern based trainers to compete in the classics.

In the age of retainers most of the southern stables have their jockeys sorted so opportunities are few and far between for PH.

As for the current crop of jockeys, for me, the top jockeys stand out a mile from their peers. We have seen something of a creation of a premier league. I think we have at least 5 outstanding jockeys in this country and their success has not resulted from being put up on steering jobs.

I'm not saying he's a bad jockey. What i am asking is , is he worthy to be alongside former champion jockeys such as Piggott , Eddery , Roberts , Dettori , Fallon etc...

Based on his big race wins i say no.

Infact can anyone name any big race wins he's had ?

You don't need big race wins to be champion

Games changed since Eddery,Piggott etc not riding for a massive stable with Arab money and horses

so a very worthy Champ imvoho

Darley and Sanders were by far the worst IMO. Dettori and Fallon are still the best around nowadays.
