A monkey can travel faster than a racehorse though.
I saw one riding through hartlepool on a pushbike once.
Well i thought it was a monkey,i only caught a glimpse

lol,I could do with a lion for tonight greg, leaving shortly to go and watch Palermo V Cagliari.Even a lion might not be enough protection, their fans are worse than the Romans were with Christians.[:(][:(][smiley:crazy]
Prediction if you like a speculative dabble.2-1 Cagliari or 2-2 draw.[;)]

Found my answer on Google: If you go by the number of body lengths a critter can cover in a second, the fastest land animal is the tiger beetle.
They run so fast they actually outstrip their own vision - so they will pick a point, run to it, and then have to stop to get their bearings again. If the tiger beetle was the same size as a cheetah and still covered the same number of body lengths, they'd be breaking the sound barrier when they run.
Of course, because they're actually less than an inch long, they're really only going about 15 mph.

so are we saying the lion can nearly go 50% faster than frankel at top speed but would only make 2f??
there are races in the US of this distance. just imagine it lads... odds on

The point is the speed of the racehorse - 40mph - will be timed with a 10 stone bloke on his back
If a racehorse were being chased by a lion , the jockey would be quickly jettisoned and the horse would disappear over the horizon a lot faster than 50mph
So the result of any such 'race' would be a lion eating a jockey.

All those cats would not beat frankel over a mile sn't that why zebras the majority of time escape their predators such as lions even though they are slower.

the assumption of the lion eating the jockey is wrong.
tony culhane sets off in front lion lies close in second as they come up the home s8 tony pulls said horse violently to the left just as lion is about to pounce , leaving the lion hurtling over the line in first place.
stewards see nothing wrong.

the fact is that a lion's top speed is faster than a top racehorse. however, it would probably only last 2 or 3 furlongs.
...also why dont we race zebra's?

lions are built for short sharp bursts of speed, on the fast ground of the african savannah. they'd be no good in a selling hurdle run in bottomless ground on a wet afternoon in market rasen.
the reason they are faster than a horse is because they have to be, otherwise they'd never catch any food. most of their food source tends to be animals that are as fast or faster than horses.
hope this helps [;)]

I don't know if a zebra could win the derby but they are slightly slower than a racehorse at full speed. a racehorse is about 45 miles an hour. lion is approx 50 and zebra is 40. But zebras have great stamina.. so its not inconcievable that a zebra could beat a racehorse over a mile and a half.

no, because an animal cannot exceed it's defined limits. if a zebras top speed is 40 miles an hour, then there isn't a zebra out there that can run at 45 miles an hour. just as usain bolt, however quick he is, is not running at faster than 27mph.
having said that I have no idea whether or not a zebra could beat a racehorse over 1 mile and a half. certainly racehorses are not really built for maintaining great speed over long distances. for example when you see it described that a horse has "quickened up" it is likely to not be running quicker than it did at the start of the race, just that it's competitors have slowed down at an even more extreme level.

dickie hills can get a good tune out of a lion tho he eventually steers it in to a another lion or behind a pack of lions , falls of etc etc..
To be fair he did get boxed in by a herd of Wilderbeast.

The Zebra has never been domesticated so I couldn't see one going in stalls, You'd probably be looking at decent bumpers, maybe the Aintree bumper with the hope an easy lead and fast ground?
