yes just saw arthur pitt on atr,,hes 76 now..i remember him training..cos im from epsom area...but i cant think of many of his good horses..i do remember one real good horse called freight forwarder who won lots of races owned byalan spence the now chelsea vice president!
Best Flat horse that he trained was probably Rocamadour (3rd in Eclipse Stakes). Ocean King (1974 Cesarewitch winner) and another good handicapper was he had was Redden (Won 1975 City & Suburban).
His best jumper was undoubtedly Persian War whom he trained to win the 1970 Irish Sweeps Hurdle at Leopardstown. Another good `un` as mentioned above was Moyne Royal (1973 Stayers Hurdle Winner at Cheltenham).

Just grabbed a couple of Horses In Training at random.
1974 - Arthur Pitt had 34 horses listed - including the aforementioned Ocean King - but others mostly moderate..... Starch Reduced, Moyne Royal, Merry Cricketer, Quarrymaster, Pauldenham.
Somewhat surprised to see that J Banks was listed as an owner with him.
1981 - 29 horses listed - including Freight Forwarder - again, mostly moderate others.... Acapulco Gold, Bihas Bounty, Davenport Boy, King Hagen, Leith Hill Flyer, Sharp Celeste, Rocadamour.
Owners - Oliver Reed - and a certain C F Sparrowhawk ... now there's a name I remember.

The owner of Persian War was a right k n o b. Continally changing trainers. Persain War won 3 Champion Hurdles with Colin Davies then he moved him to Pitt. I had a large (for me) double on Brigadier Gerard (2000gns) 12s and Persian War (Champion Hurdle) at 4s (2nd). Still have the ante post ticket. IN fairness probably wouldn't have beaten Bula that day.

Youre right Micheal,it was Haynes.Henry Alper owned Persian War,he had the West Ham colours. He had a share with Ruby Huntman at Harringay and White City but fell out with him.The firm was still in the name of H.Alper right up to the end although he had nothing to do with it for years.I remember another good hurdler/staying handicapper Clever Scot.He won the Great Met when it was run across the Downs.I remember it because I had a big bet at the time for me,20 ponies each way.A boy called R.Dicey rode it ,I think he became champion apprentice,he was good.Colin Davies trained it.

whitmarsh, His daughter Wendy runs the club now, it was based in the house where Scobie breasley and walter Nightingall lived. Put up for sale last week.
Arthur got Persian War at the tail end of its career, but won the Sweeps Hurdle with it.
Alper had it with Brian Swift first, won the triumph and the Victor Ludorum; then it was entered in france apparently against Brians wishes.. Alper moved it to Colin Davies but Jimmy Uttley kept the mount over hurdles, and Brian Jago rode it on the flat.
Arthur trained a horse called Claret and Blue for Alper. It was alao Arthur who got Alan spence (Freight Forwarder) involved.

I think Teasy Weasy owned Rag Trade for many years and then moved it to Arthur. It was with Arthur when it won the 1975 Midlands Grand National. The house is with agents, "with the benefit of the drinks licence". Twenty odd rooms, bar, kitchen, restaurant etc plus an acre. O.I.R.O. £2m. The stables at Wendover where Roger Ingram trains and South hatch where Jim Boyle trains are unaffected.

Interesting to read this, Arthur is my 2nd cousin, I don't really know him but I used to visit his parents at Winforton in Herefordshire with my Dad (his cousin) I always used to look out for Arthurs horses in particular his Alan Spence horses like Freight Forwarder, Ocean King and another which I think was Northern Lights. Arthur was well known as a trainer who could work with younger horses, he was never going to train big names, but from all accounts he was quite a character, I think he might have had a spot of bother with the authorities at Epsom a couple of times, hence the move to South Hatch!

I grew up in Epsom and remember Arthur when he first started training. one of his forst winners was a horse called Obrigada. A mate of mine was a green keeper at the RAC club and Arthur told him to have a few quid on it in a race at Wincanton. It duly won in the hands of Barry Brogan. Seem to remember it was about 8/1. Happy days at Epsom then when they had some good horses and trainers. Does anyone know if an old mate of mine Joe Stevens is still around? One of lifes charachters!

Thanks Mister E. Say hello to Joe for me if you see him. Tell him Ron Moore was asking after him. I used to drive for Joe when he was training, that was 40 years ago. Don't get to many of the southern meetings these days as I live in the South West.
