There is a time when the 3yo's getting the weight allowance have a big advantage but I've forgotten when it is. Can someone kidnly remind me and advise when it reverts back to the older horses?
In races in excess of 1m 4fs from now on especially in handicaps. One of the reasons is because 3yos are still unexposed over the longer distances. Very few qualifiers in July, but some rewarding odds if you are prepared to chance it blind. The weight for age allowance goes down at the rate of roughly 1lbs per 2 weeks. It's on the BHA website.
Since 2005, in 1m5f or more in 3yo+ h'caps in July in UK only.
36 from 163 (22.1%) Profit of £51.88 ROI +31.8%
With an SP above 5/1 11 from 85 (12.9%) Profit £62 ROI +72.9%
There have been winners at 33/1;25/1;18/1: usually when there are multiple qualifiers in the race.
1m5fs will include races more than 1m 4.5f

It hasn't changed much down the years, basically its there to allow 3yo's to reach full maturity over the course of the year, although its said by the end of its 2yo career the horse has already reached 95% maturity, longer trips are supposedly more strenuous for 3yo's. Like a lot of things in racing its not exactly foolproof and can be open to debate whether the allowances in the early part of the year that 3yo's enjoy over their older brethren is a bit extreme, for instance Midday was giving a massive 12lb to Misty For Me on Saturday.

''ribotman So the weight for age system that has lasted succeesfully for a century and more is flawed?'
Maybe its changed. Horses are trained differently and more forward at an early age and continuely bred to be earlier types.

when i was a youngster the general rule was that in the eclipse a top class 4yo would beat a top class 3 yo but when you got to the King George it marginally favoured the younger horse.

the good older horses are moved on so the 3-y-o's often meet older horses weighted up to or beyond their best. The scale isn't wrong. You see it most clearly in the top races. Ombudsman and Calandagan would beat all but exceptional 3-y-o's.
