The 'lets load them up' kind of comments make me laugh the most - like he thinks he's actually running the show! Laugh

'All jump that one well...'

As at least two crash and bounce through the fence...one of my faves of his...

Good old Thommo?
Is miles ahead of that Darren guy who screeches like a banshee if a pigeon even flies away from them.
Good old Thommo!
And Hoiles's continued change of tone, as if he is telling us a secret that none of us but him can see!
Good old Thommo!

My pet hate phrase from any commentator is "and there's only about ten lengths from last to first here".
As if being ten lengths last is of some consolation/value/interest to anyone.  Or as if a ten length deficit in a modest class race can be made up just like that come the home straight by one of the most modest horses in training.

Anyone noticed that Shouty has started sounding a bit Churchillian mid race?

he's as heavy as him as well.

I would know what shouty and Darren sound like, if I didn't always mute them!

I do too but some bad memories linger, don;t they.

True, that's exactly why I mute them as soon as possible!

I was watching Tommo commentate on a 3 horse race a week or so ago. As they turned into the home straight, the maestro announced that "there's only a couple of lengths between the LEADING three". Thanks for that.

Laugh airto

TBF to Tommo of course it isn't just him that rankles as a commentator. I think the main point is what do they actually add when watching a race, and in many cases nothing, as your example shows!

I mostly prefer to watch all races with silence, but that's my preference.

I watch replays in silence, but watching live its always better with a good call. Better silent than a bad one though.

There are two kinds of bad callers. Those whose actual words are badly chosen, and those with an irritaing voice and intonation. Either detract significantly from the enjoyment of watching a race.
I have five that tick both those boxes and while I sometimes reluctantly tolerate without muting for four of them, one of them has no exceptions under any circumstances.

Good summary of this issue steerforth. I'd also add 'volume' as a key criteria for me, in rushing for the mute button.

It's also one reason I can't stand most modern sports commentators (e.g. football), and can't even contemplate the dreaded football/sport female commentator...agghh! Scared
