Terry Ramsden, the entrepreneur who made and then lost more than £150m in the 1980s, is heading back to court as he finds himself embroiled - yet again - in a legal battle involving money.

With his trademark long hair, Ramsden, the son of a post office engineer and a factory cleaner, was one of the City's most flamboyant characters in the 1980s. For many his rise and fall epitomised the era.

Stockbroker Hoodless Brennan is suing Ramsden in the High Court for more than £1m - claiming that he has failed to pay them for shares they bought for him earlier this year.

The legal row is just one of a number that Ramsden has become entangled in since his high-profile return to the City. The former bond trader, racehorse owner and legendary gambler - who once bet £1m on a single horse - returned to public life in 2003 with plans to launch PETS, a new securities-trading system.

"I always thought I'd get a second chance, now I have and I've earned it," he said at the time.

But Ramsden has since failed to recreate his success of the 1980s and has found himself at the centre of a string of rows over money.

In 2005 he became embroiled in a legal battle with housebuilder Berkeley Group, after pulling out of a deal to buy a £2.5m house in Chelsea. And earlier this year former advisers, City law firm Edwin Coe, issued a writ after a dispute over unpaid fees. Both cases have now been settled out of court.

But he is still involved in a legal battle with J Investments, which claims to have invested more than £1m with Ramsden between October 2003 and August 2004. The offshore investment company claims that Ramsden failed to invest the funds.

And now he is being sued by Hoodless Brennan, which claims to have bought 6.3m shares in Private Trading System, a company listed on the lightly regulated Plus Market, according to a High Court writ.

The writ adds that Ramsden has made only two payments, of just £26,000 and £46,000 for the shares, and almost £1.1m remains outstanding. The broker is now charging interest payments of £411.64 a day.

Hoodless claim Ramsden opened a telephone dealing account with the stockbrokers on August 22 this year. The stockbroker adds that it bought the shares at his request on September 7 and 10 this year.

Private Trading System is the parent of Private Treaty Market, which developed the PETS trading system invented by Ramsden. Until March 2005 Ramsden was a director of Private Treaty Market.

A spokesman for Ramsden said that his client was confident of settling with both J Investments and Hoodless Brennan. "Both cases are in the hands of his solicitors," he said.

Ramsden made his fortune transforming investment firm Glen International. At his peak the bond trader, who left school at 16, reportedly owned two helicopters, a Gulfstream jet, 27 cars, a dozen houses, 120 racehorses, a 30 per cent share of Chelsea Football Club and the whole of Walsall FC.

But when the Japanese market collapsed in 1987, so did Glen International and Ramsden's fortune. Ladbrokes alone was owed £58m.

The fall was swift and spectacular - Glen International is said to have sustained losses of £147m in a catastrophic 41-day period.

Having failed to save Glen International, Ramsden fled to the US. He later spent six months in prison in Los Angeles fighting extradition after being arrested at the request of the Serious Fraud Office.

Declared bankrupt in 1992 with debts of £100m he was given a two-year suspended sentence for fraud. He was jailed in 1998 for concealing money from creditors which he used to buy a house for his estranged wife and son.

he plenty of money it was the early 80s, asked me to arrange for the garden grass to be cut, the garden was basically 2 fields, i said a guy i knew would do it £80, i got a farmer to do it and he kept the silage, i pocketed the the 80 sovs.

hard to remember now angel, i have a mental image tho of a tallish bloke black hair.

it was just another job that i put a team together on a couple of times, one was an extension, one was a full painting job inside and out, and digging a decent size pond out the back of the stables, he stocked it with trout, and enjoyed hand feeding them.

The horse you are probably thinking of might be Solar Cloud,won the Triumph in 86.I first met Terry in 1981 at a "do" in Essex,surrounded by traders from the City.Not once did he talk business,all football and racing.He rode the Japanese markets and fell off when they crashed,too many eggs in the one basket.Like his gambling,all in.Glen International were massive and thanks to him I made my first stock market investments and a small fortune.

Kept in touch sporadically,as i was overseas for most of the mid/late 80s lost touch.Shocked when I heard about GI crashing,contrary to some speculation his gambling had nothing to do with it.Even the £58 million he lost to laddies would only have dented the company.His passions were football and racing and he indulged to the fullest extent.

He may have a criminal record but he is no crook,he got done for concealing money which was for his ex wife and kids,not many gamblers would do that,he did.

He thought it was ironic that Wallsal were nicknamed the Saddlers .A thoroughly good man whom I havent been in touch with for over 20 years but I doubt he has changed.The moniker glentoby was coined from Glen International and Toby Tobias.

In his hey day he was asked which did he prefer, the flat or the jumps? He said he preferred the flat, "as it was a quicker death."

Amazing how memories play tricks as on the RP site it doesnt have Solar Cloud down as a Ramsden horse, must have been similar colours.
