I know there are very good female trainers but for me Jenny was the best. Not many males never mind females had the talent and affinity with horses that she had.
Contrary to the image portrayed by the media she is a very nice person.
Any anecdotes or amusing tales? I remember her slapping a jockey, think Luke Harvey may have been the recipient, not many trainers could get away with that.
My grandfather worked for the Pitmam's and broke in Borrow Hill Lad in he 80's, didn't knw this until he passe away in Nov 10. He was a well known Horse dentist when he left.

Brendan Powell was her Head Lad for a while, she did actually say he would never make a jockey as long as he had a whole up his ass. But i do agree that she was the best female trainer so far.

Training on a large scale requires 2 skills, one is knowing the horses and the other is managing a big team of staff. It is a team effort in the case of the very best whether male or female. Jenny Pitman did get there from a very modest start and on that basis is probably the best. Several good yards have a woman as the named trainer but you may have to look at the rest of the team. Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore for example.

jenny is a good egg, tells it how it is no nonsense and as for jamie osborne he has got one of those faces you want to slap reminds me of tim nice but dim ,think she would have slapped choc as well if she was still training .top lass imo

JP would always be a hard act to follow. Iron hand and iron will, stood for no nonsense and backed it up with results. Also was IMO a real racing type, in it for all the right reasons, and her love of horses was never in doubt. Same can be said for many I suppose, but she was a pioneer and deserves to be at the forefront of any poll. Venetia Williams isn't bad either though!

The only blot on her copybook was when she sent Golden Freeze out to wreck Carvills Hill's chance in the Gold Cup back in the 90s. I cant realy forgive her for that.

Knew her fairly well ged, almost went to work for her when I was thinking of leaving the forces, the Balkans kicked off and put paid to that.Remember visiting shortly after she won the Gold Cup,she took me through to the office to show me the cup.It was sitting on a window ledge in full view from outside,I commented on it being a target for burglars.
She laughed and said look behind you,I hadnt noticed a blo0dy big rotweiler sleeping in the corner.Lovely lady.

just a reminder about this waste of time called a trainer. when she trained Toby Tobias or "Toby" as she annoyingly kept calling him on the telly. She said in the King George (Dessies last win) "Toby will not be given a hard race", what the f***??. This was a group 1, for christ's sake. Dessie blitzed around the corner into the straight and at 7/2 I pi**** myself knowing no danger was coming from behind. In the Gold Cup she deliberately ruined Golden Freeze as an animal just to get into Carvill Hill's head and then to top it all she claims on TV to have animal welfare at heart, she is an outrageous hypocrit and makes my blood boil

WTFH - I'm a big fan of 'head' As for Golden Freeze.....I don't think there was anything wrong with those tactics in trying to 'expose' a brilliant but flawed character in Carvill's Hill. A trainer for the future that could well rival Jenny's achievements may be Emma Lavelle - she has a very capable string of horses, a decent owner-base and seems to campaign them the right way.

What were other trainers supposed to do with Carvill's Hill.....let him roll along unharried, turn the screw and steamroller them all into the ground? He needed to be properly tested and he wasn't up to the task. I can't see anything wrong with it and I think most of the bleating was done by people that 'blew their beans' on the supposed good thing. He may well have been the best horse in the race (including The Fellow who was second) but that doesn't give him a divine right to win. There's nothing I've seen to rival this in racing, but it goes on in football every week, in that 'tactics' have to be used. You can't just let a team like Barcelona or Arsenal enjoy their practice session, before inevitably putting the ball in the net. NO! You get stuck in, and use whatever's in your weaponry.

Hated her at the time. But if i was an owner i'd expect my trainer to be hard and find me a way to win. Carvills hill couldn't cope and years later i look back on it with 'good on her' feelings
You wanna be a great, earn it. Carvills wasn't a great.Potentially he was ,but he couldn't jump properly!

Brodie - that's exactly as I see it and I'm surprised there aren't more in agreement. Potentially great, but he didn't want to earn it. John McCririck gave him the moniker of 'the school bully' and that's exactly what he was. He bullied his opposition but didn't have a 'plan B' when things went tits up, as they did on a few occasions.

£1000 for a 1/14th share and £295 per month after. so £14k initial payment for the horse and then over £4k per month fees per horse ongoing for 2 years.
so considering training can be up to £2000 per month and the horses could have been picked up for a few grand at the sales, then it's easy money for the racing club.
sorry no idea how good or bad any of their horses are.

Very good trainer but is giving Mark a hard time in the interview! My best memory of her horses was Indefence winning the Supreme with Warren Marston at 25/1. I backed it on the day and put the lot on Collier Bay. Most profitable day of my racing life. Indefence was unbeaten after 2 novice wins at "unfashionable tracks" but made most and was never challenged. He never did much after but had very bad feet and needed special shoes.

I agree about Jessica Harrington, as she's an all rounder and always appearing the utmost professional in public. JP, who I associate more with staying chasers, by her own admission, had no interest in flat racing.
JP also let herself down, sometimes in public, with her occasional tempestuous attitude. As one late trainer once said to me ''you can admire her but you haven't got to like her''..

Popular with racing fans though. I remember a day racing when a jobsworth refused her entry to Tote Credit to watch an away race and there were loads of racegoers offering her their badge to get in to watch it. That was before Betfred got hold of it of course. There were usually at least 10 trainers in a Tote Credit office 30 years ago and they were very rarely asked for a member badge.

I did work for Jenny for a short time she was a good Boss....Brendan Powell was Head Lad at the time struggling to get a ride.....Jenny said he would never make a Jockey.
