Just found the outcome to Paul Carberry's shocking effort on Martin Scruff yesterday. Report below is from Irish Independent. No ban and trainer "satisfied" with ride. What a joke:

Barracked by a section of the small crowd on returning to the runner-up berth, the rider was interviewed by the stewards and recounted how the race unfolded before being severely cautioned for "an error of judgment".

His version of events, in essence, to them was that "he felt on the approach to the final hurdle that he had all his competitors covered and when the eventual winner jumped the last hurdle slowly he was satisfied to give his own mount a quick breather as he felt that the leader had nothing more to offer. He was surprised that the winner picked up quickly and galloped very strongly to the line."

Elliott said he "reluctantly" ran the horse for a second time in six days because of the handicapper's reassessment. He added that "the rider knows his charge well and that the gelding may have been feeling the effects of his most recent race", before expressing his satisfaction with the ride.

How can the trainer express his satifaction with the ride given the jockey admits an error of judgement?

BULLSHIT

Missed race.

Did he come there posing again ?

Hanging off his horse like a Shankill Road reprobate, riding their cob bareback, perhaps ?

Won't ever forget the Best Mate incident. The bloke hasn't got a single ounce of class in his miserable,worm-like body.

We need to keep them in racing.

If they are not employed they will cause mischief.

There is very little lead left on my church roof as it is.

Alain,
He rode the ride we all expected up to a point; out the back dossing along until 2nd last, when he suddenly realised he might be getting out of his ground (about 2 furlongs later than us watching) - gave the horse a few shoves along and he picked up nicely between horses, approached the last about 5th, jumped the last fast, this took him into 2nd, maybe 2 lengths down on the winner but easily within range given an ordinary ride - however Carberry decided at this point to sit bolt upright and take a pull on the horse. This left him 3 lengths down on a short run-in, and surprise surprise, the horse couldnt quicken again well enough to catch him.

A bit like Timmy Murphy i suppose.

Why do we never see the likes of Jason Maguire,Wayne Hutch or AP McCoy ride like this ?
Report pedrobob • February 17, 2011 10:10 AM GMT
Elliott added that "the rider knows his charge well"

He's only ever ridden him once before..... and probably never at home Laugh

What sort of jockey gives a horse a 'breather' after the last when they havent even hit the front yet?!

He was surprised that the winner picked up quickly and galloped very strongly to the line.

Why would he assume the winner wouldnt gallop on strongly?

The gelding may have been feeling the effects of his most recent race.

He clearly had a stone in hand and could have won 10 lengths if the rider had wanted him to imo. Many have called this ride 'bent', but i totally disagree, this was all about Carberry's ego and his obsession with winning on the bridle when he's on a good thing.

I don't think even Usain Bolt could beat an overweight like me over 100m....

... if he gave me a 95m head start.

Well done Paul, great ride.
Report EVILROYSLADE • February 17, 2011 11:43 AM GMT
He never really put the horse in the race until it was over. I have only just watched the race, so no pocket talk from me. I would have been screaming had I backed it. A truly bad ride, and the only thing I can think of is that Carberry was thinking of the next booze up he was attending.

A lesser known jockey would have got a ten day ban

Stewards response is surely the funniest - "a severe caution"- what the hell is that ?? Paul you've been a very naughty boy yes sir sorry sir see you in the Dog and Gate for a Pint after...
Report Desert Pilot • February 17, 2011 1:41 PM GMT
The whole thing is a complete joke and just about sums up what an inefficient and incompetent bunch the Irish Stewards are.

This should have been taken further.

Paul Carberry made virtually NO EFFORT to win this race no matter how you try and dress things up it cannot be excused.

But he would have been aware that Stewards would do little so he chanced the "loss" and got away with it.

Why are the accounts of those who laid this heavily not scrutinised?  Or would that just embarrass Irish Racing even more?!
Report MJK • February 17, 2011 5:44 PM GMT
Carberry's lucky it was Punchestown and not Leopardstown. It wouldnt've been only heckling that he'd received!
Report larrence • February 17, 2011 5:48 PM GMT
The comedy element of racing nowdays , just swept under the mat.[smiley:crazy]
Report herblington • February 17, 2011 10:20 PM GMT
It was as bad a ride as I have ever seen and deserved a one month ban and included Cheltenham, that would have served him right.

Sadly there is a growing band of pricckks in Irish Ra cing who thinks its clever to try and win by the minimum, Carberry is the Daddy, with Townend Heir Apparent
Report Warrackhunt • February 17, 2011 11:34 PM GMT
ive always admired carberry...looks great when he's good..

there was nothing untoward wotsoever...it was 1.5 to lay at halfway...if people knew it wudnt win there was ample opportunity to lay it in running...he tried to be cocky and win on the bridle..he did'nt take a pull over the last he just stopped riding as he thort he would win hard held...take martin scruff out the race the winner quickened well as the distance to the third only grew up the run in....it was a bad judgement simple as.
Report wizardofoz • February 17, 2011 11:36 PM GMT
ffs why all the surprise?

Carberry often rides like a clown, haven't you noticed?
Report Desert Pilot • February 24, 2011 9:28 PM GMT
So that we can highlight the sheer incompetence of the Irish Stewards in not dealing with this matter correctly, I think it's important that this thread is kept near the the top.

I can only assume that the Trainer is either myopic or the desired outcome was achieved.
No prizes for guessing what I think.
