Was in my local Hill's today placing some football bets for Sat when I witnessed a con-artist at work! The chap was playing some FOBT roulette nearest the cashier (young nice girl but a tad inexperienced), he wrote out about 6 different bets on individual slips with nonsense like £1 on trap 1 (trap challenge) and other silly bets like that which made employee get flustered while searching for prices, meanwhile sandwiched in between these £1 mug bets there was a £140 single on the dogs in which the hare was in motion. He then sets his ringtone off on his mob, walks out the shop pretending to be on the blower whilst indicating to cashier he will be 2 mins. Boom never to be seen again. Obviously he times the shop walkout to see if his dog is likely to win or not as the case was. Shop staff had a term for him "slow...." something or other.

During my days managing a corals i had a pro con artist in.
Typically I was on my own. He had a few singles then gave me a slip that basically backed every dog in the race.
He claimed it was a 120 quid single on the 4 dog.
I picked up the phone and he was off out the door telling me he'd be back later.
Unsuprisingly he never came back!

Slow counter was the term thanks, The staff also pulled up tons of pics on their monitors (and showed me!!) of some scammers and the types of bets they place. Whats the tricast scam?? Oh and the footy bets were nothing serious.
The slow count has been on the scene for decades, the key is/was that you had to have the manager on the payroll as well and you used to get away with it, apparently.

Was doing bet acceptance/security stuff for a new start-up a few years ago, they told me the shop manager they had brought in was the best in the business. Quite apart from the fact that his eyes looked in two different directions, watched him get slow counted two races in a row by some geezer. Phoned him, said you've just been slow counted are you really that dim, he goes 'what is a slow count?'
Can remember the days when international footy matches were on coupons, and often the kick off times were not checked....amazing really compared to what it would be like now.

Not a scam but a few years ago the Spanish Lottery changed the time of the draw and a few bookmakers still had prices up 4 hours after it was drawn. The clever ones put about 6 or 7 different bets for small stakes in the shops and got away with it by telling the shop staff to check the result online. The idiots who worked for other bookmakers and proceeded to put £10 trebles & £5 yankies online duly lost their jobs!

Remember getting slow counted one Saturday morning on the dogs in Catford........as manager, clocked what was going on, (bet was £300).....dog lost, he was out the door....chased him round the one way system, and he disappeared. Checked out a grocery store and he was in one the isles...approached him and he put his hand to his back pocket.....I thought he was going to pull a knife....thought to myself....I'm not putting my neck on the line for the company ....and backed off.....he subsequently ran out the shop......
As has been said above , been going on for years.....but my theory is that nowadays it must be easier to get away with, as the quality/knowledge/training of the staff, is not what it used to be....

Sometimes the scammer is behind the counter....had an hour to kill one evening some years ago and went into a Celtic Bookmakers shop where I wasn`t a regular. I was the only punter in the shop and only one member of staff there was a middle aged woman. Put £20 on a 14/1 shot and it dead-heated. Didn`t check the rules but at the time most bookies paid out in full on a dead-heat so I expected to collect £300. Went up and she duly handed me £150. I said nothing, took the money assuming the worst but decided to have a look at rules on the wall just in case. Soon as she saw me do it...."Oh sorry, I think I made a mistake...." Yeah right.

This was about 12 or 13 years ago in Ireland. I used to bet in a Powers shop in that town from time to time so I`m guessing Powers. I think around that time some of the majors started offering it as a concession but I can`t be sure. I just remember going up expecting to be paid in full.
Had a Greek con artist who used to pick up A Euro week end coupon up... on the internet for fixture kick off changes... earlier... gets result, and rushes in to to do three correct scores to £20 each 1-2, 2-1, 2-2 (14/1)... obviously got the correct score ! Not on Epos, staff member sends it to the empty's file... I was too warm for him, but got away with it before I became manager... the clever thing was having 2 x £20 losing bets !

Back in the early 90s a small bookies in Essex tried to rip off a friend of my OHs.She worked for Hills at the time and was forbidden to put a bet on with the firm so on her way to work she popped in to her local indy,a one shop concern.
That day the biggest ever Placepot was paid out at Newbury.....£19 grand and change,she copped it.When she went to collect they palmed her off with less than £500 and pointed at the rules of the shop.Not uncommon in the days when Independents had maximimum payouts for TOTE bets as they stood them and they did not go into the pool.
I went to the bookies the next day and asked if they had any old posters or rule sheets or old Sporting Life wall sheets I could use for research work for printing design.They must have emptied a shed but right on the top was the previous rules sheet.The only limitation on Tote bets concerned doubles,trebles and above.
No mention of the Placepot or Jackpot,for which they would have required a licence e.g they could accept bets at Tote odds but the Pis7spot and Jackpot were a National Pool bet.Long story cut short,they had replaced their rules overnight and put on there a maximum for the Pis&pot in 2 forms e.g a percentage of the pot at 10% and a maximum based on total and unit stake which I cannot recall.
Other than the taking of her original bet being unlawful,their change of rules overnight to thwart her getting her dues were outright fraud,they thought because she was a woman that nearly £500 would appease her.Probably would have as she was clueless and only put the bet on for amusement at work.
Their mistake was she asked me if she had won because she had 2 non runners,both went on the fav with the lowest racecard number.She had won and her perm meant she had a unit stake of 20p...here returns were £3,900 and change.
Being a Police Officer you would assume I just nicked them for Fraud,wrong despite the evidence.
They had no TV other than a small portable,no SIS and no timed till.Fully a week later I arranged for her hubby,myself and 4 others to go into the shop.Me with a brick sized mobile phone.We wrote out 8 betting slips with combination forecast doubles and singles for 4 races,the 3rd race was left blank.
The 3rd race on the slips was actually the next race due off,I was on the phone to Wendy in the Hills shop,she gave me the numbers as they came around the last bend.They were filled in and placed,8 slips of £ 6 straight and reversed.The guy (Owners son) could hardly conceal his joy and get them through quick enough.
He took the money,we could see him settling and his face changed when he got to the 8 slips,not only had the 3rd race clicked (in reality the 1st) but the 4th race had also finished in the right order for a double.
In 25 minutes he had just lost nearly £12,000 from a scam.
Right or wrong?

When I confronted him, and gave him his ''batting wicket'' he started boasting about how much he'd made from the shop... one of my regular's was going to deck him !

As most with long memories know,I took as much cash as we could get and the keys of the shop.
good evening Halycon.....and nice one..I always viewed it that although it wasn't my money, it was a matter of principle....Glen....nice one as well......surprised he gave you the keys to the shop as well though and didn't wait to investigate himself to see if you had scammed him first!
I worked in Corals years ago. Had a guy try and place a bet with me on the dogs. He gives me the slip just as the hare is about to run. I look at the bottom of the slip and I couldn't tell if it was £1 or £100 bet. I ask him "what's the stake mate?". He just answers "yeah mate, it's about to be off". I ask him again what the stake is. Same reply. As they come out of the the traps. I tell him the bets off, as it's not been placed. I did't even scan the bet.
He obviously wanted me to scan the bet through without looking at stake. Then if it lost, give me £1 and if it won give me £100. I was a trainee manager at the time. So wasn't stupid. I then asked him to leave the shop and not come back.

Grand Prix Motor racing,the guy that gets round the first bend on front usually wins but a lot of people working in the bookies don't know this,but most know its a two hour race,so its not difficult to get a bet at starting price just after the off,if you are in the high street bookies.if you know what i mean.

Arrogant staff/managers that treat the money as their own and hate paying out ,staff and managers that treat punters trying hard to win with contempt .Staff that take too long to bring screen up find a pen and write a price down and if it shortens it’s changed but gets bigger and it’s not . Staff that defend fobs ,staff that simply do not appreciate how difficult it is to turn a profit at the prices in shop .The mega comfy soft leather fobt seats versus the hard plastic screen seats ....ect ect ect
In the old days many managers got caught on national day, queue's to the door- can I just put this dog on please Hackney 11-03 race, put on 11-04. manager settles it and punter moves on. I knew a punter who was successful at 6 bookies national day, did 2 shops twice. No chance today with the 3 punters waiting for the bets to be put on

go to every bookie in the land after the grand national and tell them you had £1 each way on the fourth horse but you lost your ticket,they will pay out to get you away from the counter.a days travelling will net you a few grand.

Those who never knew will say it is not true, but I maintain there was a "backdoor" to the FOBT roulette machine pattern.

not so much the bookies , but coming out of catford dogs one sat night the 3 card trick was going , and the dealer says hold on a min is that old bill and walks away to look up the road , in the mean time one of the players ( a team member ) lifts up the queen and lifts the corner of the card a bit and puts it back , the dealer comes back says right lads last game throws the cards down with the middle card corner sticking up, well its pandemonium every ones laying fivers on this card . dealer milks it u all done turns the card bang 2 of clubs hahaha complete silence done . and no i didnt bet i had done cobblers at the dogs

michael i well remember coming out of Catford dogs back in the late 60s and stopping to watch the 3 card trick heist.Being a callow youngster i fell for the lifting of the corner by one of his crew and losing my money. Had to walk all the way home to Westcombe Park that night.
