When Joe died, he left Peter a surprise in his will - he did not notleave him the pitches. So Peter decided to go into the, erm, adult entertainment industry ie he rented a flat and sublet it to hookers.  Peter found himself wanted by her majesty, so decided to hop off to Spain, where he died of a heart attack shortly afterwards ? mid '90s.

shalimah,
now here's a good story from soon after i first started
re ALEC DENBY
myself and my clerk vic , john brown [ burnley ] and arthur , ron charles and tracy and kim all went out for a steak meal whilst down at the cheltenham festival.
we happened to go into the same hotel restaurant that alec denby was a resident . he was there with a group of others eating and drinking too.
when we were ready to pay and leave the waitress came with the bill and asked which room we were . i won't say who but alec denby's room key was on the table next to us so as quick as a flash he said that number. the girl was happy and booked all seven steaks to alec denby.
we gave the girl a tenner tip which was a lot in those days [ 1970's ]
happy days

The Doc was a good goalie , once played for the English v the Scots one Ayr Gold Cup week , had a stormer , saved everything , got chaired off and he loved it . Cash is spot on -the Doc was loud and different class for knowing , sadly missed.

talking about barnsley bookmakers
GRANVILLE PEARSON smiler was a class act. died suddenly while taking a bath.a great loss to the ring.
STUART RYAN..pat ryan and his family have all worked in racing , and still are in various ways. pat was another bookmaker beaten by progress , his major problem being the njpc insisting on the new joints [ no rentals in early days ].he and his wife just couldn't physically transport everything into the ring. a quality bookmaker , still makes the odd appearance .

Fred Ash, from the Midlands, met him when he bought a shop in Torquay, early 80's. I used to flap my dogs at Newton Abbot, Exeter, St. Austell and Glastonbury. Fred loved the dogs (was the owner of Dumbles Maid, Oaks winner 48?) Fred would come along and put money on when I was having a go. Sadly no longer with us.
Also Harry "Brylcream" Metcalfe, used to bet at Exeter flap and at the horses of course, never a problem, also passed on I believe.

I think the chap who made the book wasnt Wilf Botterill but a young whippersnapper who was doing it for him.  He looked over 100 years old himself!
