Back to the C's,I've just remembered one of the legends of the Northern Bookmakers.
Robert Corkhill traded as Bobby Hill, the man who brought Neville the Devil into the game. This man was a better fiddler than Max Jaffa. One of the most popular Bookmakers ever in the North.

John Henwood i believe JH still bets @ wimbledon

He certainly does stand at Wimbledon p2p, bets straight now not without the jolly like he used to, only three books last time I went. Henwood, John White and Atreed. There used to be about 14 books years ago.

going back 20 mayb 25 yrs at the south/east p2points there were some real characters. one in rarticular who also bet in the cheap side at catford dogs, his name was wal he bet under the banner anderson almost certainly not his name as most books never bet under their real name then.he was in his 50's then and wud turn up with a different busty tart every week too many funny stories to tell u bout wal but heres a quikie,i was clerking for alan wrigglesworth and as u know he has neva been guilty of standing 1 for more than £3, anyway wal comes in and asks wriggles for a £500/£1000 the odds on chance wriggles bet him i nearly fainted knowing if any tic/tac/ floorman asked for a £100/14 they got halved.anyway wriggles rushed round and finished up havin a £600/£1200 bak all in i asked him why he had so much on he said he thought it a certainty. you guessed it got beat . after racing wal gave wriggles a kite for the long un u guessed , its still bouncing.

flash bookie, I would have been at Catford at that time, I hardly missed a meeting for 20 years but am struggling to think of an Anderson, maybe wasn't under that guise. I remember Wally Harison over that side Tony Kemp, Sid Hooper and Tony Bryely well amongst others, they were certainly the good old days at Catford cherries.

I forgot Steve Gibbs, he was there as well at that time though I never bet with him after I was at Brighton many years ago and asked for 16 ponies when it was showing on his board and he wouldn't take it.

W - Tom Westwood - inoffensive chap.

If we're upto the S/s there's the daddy of them all who hasn't been mentioned.
SUGAR STEWART Newcastle
The most arrogant, ignorant, useless old t w at that ever graced a betting ring.Everybody was a mug to Sugar yet he had some of the best pitches in the country but he was always skint.Even away from the betting ring he didn't change much except if he had money he would spend unlike some, the only problem being it was very rare he had out.
Whilst I'm in this mood another miserable old sod was Harry Eaton-Sunderland.He made Len Boocock look like William Hill.
Bob Muir-Newcastle,big mate of Harry's after the Hexham fiasco.
Sandy Maul-The Borders,A true gentleman of the ring & a good socialiser as well.Hawick Common Riding will never be the same since Sandys gone.
Joe Neilson-Newcastle Traded as Scottie Wilson must have been in every pub North of Newcastle to Edinburgh & plenrt more elsewhere.
Slim Somerville-Edinburgh Slims still trading I believe but I've included him on here as along with the two purely because they occasionaly enjoyed a little one or two when they met.
Cluney-Edinburgh Yet another mate of the three above, all characters who unforunately are sadly missed on the Northern circuit.

j is for jolly joe (the daily treble) "numbers 3, 12, and 16 pays £85 all for £2, ticket number 57 thank you very much". i think he calculated the odds for the treble by adding the sp of the three winners together rather than multiply them lololol.

Jolly Joe...now we're talking I spent about half an hour once looking at his board in the Goodwood silver, about the size of the Isle Of Wight!
'Thats threeeee, eighteeeeeeeeen, one hundred and twenty five pouuuunds....for a twoo pound stake'
Think the true odds were over a thousand!
Dont think he would get away with it now.

Was it Jolly Joe that used to ring the handbell?
A good crowd puller that bell.
I remember Tony Lusardi also had a bell just prior to the N.J.P.C. when he used to help with the pitches at Goodwood or Ascot.Ring the bell, gather round.Happy Days.

I was at Lingfield one time and Jolly Joe went biggest one of Cecils at 9/4. I asked him for a 450 to 200 expecting to get a 90/40. Lo and behold he lays it and it wins. It was the only time I ever saw a bookie scrape the bottom of the bag for the last of the readies. Everyone around was laughing. Fair play – he was most gracious.
