Yes they are a disgrace - it's a real pleasure when you work next to them - NOT !! I know one in particular linked up to both BD and BF ( presumably worried to death he might miss out on a penny if hedging on the wrong Exchnge ! ) who spends all his time telling someone at the end of the phone to have £2 on this and £3 on that !!

|
|
By:
number 1 everywhere before the auctions i thought i would have come over him somewhere if that were the case
|
|
By:
Remember Ralph well, He did have all the best pitches
but would never take a bet. How much do you think they would have been worth in the late eighties ribero ? |
|

Anybody i know ? |

By:
it was late 90s when you could sell tip,he only bet in the north but if they had been sold at the right time he would have probably got not far short og 3/4 of a million, however if he had lasted till the auctions he would have no doubt sold straight away and all in one lot and the usual suspects would have nicked them for about 1/3 of that.

I dont know everyone that you do SOGY !! [;)]

By:
didnt Morry Peter bet at Leeds dogs too? Or is memory playing tricks? And haven't seen his name earlier - may have missed it. What happened to him?
|
|
By:
no naive, definitely not in the main ring, morry died about a year ago neary 100,the firm sold out about 9 years ago, unfortunately morrys son andrew died about 6 years ago, still see the grandson richard now and again.

|
|
By:
not quite, went racing when i was a kid with my dad in the 60s but didnt get to elland road until the mid 70s after i had left school.

By:
Sid Berman had some good rails pitches.........John Banks had some sort of understanding with him whilst he took his enforced rest.
|
|
By:
ribero I feel I must know as my story and the dates are very much
like your own. My family had quite a few dogs there over the years with Joe Kelly and Jim Brown |
|
By:
One from the north that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet was Ted Fraser ( Dixon & Fraser ). If Ted had been 6 foot tall, everyone in Durham would have had to go to bed at 9 o'clock!
|
|
By:
What about Alan Swinbank?! Took over his pitch when he wanted to leave before a northern point-to-point once and the first four jumping 4 out were all complete skinners. He once laid Jo Newton £2000/£500 at a point-to-point.

One London bookie not mentioned so far is Danny Quastel, who made a book at a few courses.

authur turner used to stand at newcastle not sure if any where else used to supply the racing sheets the board markers used in the early betting shop days. also used to be one of the main agents for the football pools.

By:
Arthur Turner. Another County Durham (Wingate ) bookmaker - big pal of Peter Watson. Arthur sold the last of his betting shops about 8 or 9 years ago. He is still alive and well.

If that is Stephen Little, I went to the Millenium Cup tournament near Swaffham when Sir Marks Daylami won the prize and managed to back four odds on losers in a row with you! A feat which as far as I can remember has never been repeated, you were wearing that rather distinctive coat of yours if you recall.

tip,in the 60s my grandad had dogs with tommy brown and i can remember my family taking me but he had probably packed up by the mid 60s so as i said i never went again until about 74/75,tommy was still training there so i used to go and see him,he used to mark everyones card in the top bar but because him and my grandad were good mates he used to give me the few "proper" jobs he had.tommy was old by then but could still do it if he had the right dog.i remember joe kelly being the main trainer in the 70s and i actually had a share in a dog trained by him but eventually got one on my own which tommy trained,a good friend of mine had a few dogs with kelly around about that time, happy days.

His name was not Bob Kett but Adrian Kett.He was in the same league as Bob Jacobs when it came to drinking. When Adrian died his pitches
were inherited by his son and it was expected that the partnership with Arthur would continue but a second son emerged which led to Arthur being cut out of the firm. This was a grave injustice which the law eventually rectified which led to the dismantling of the firm. |

Joker Watson still bets on the front line at Perth.
Jimmy Gribbin - certainly qualifies as one of the most scruffily dressed bookmakers. Always seemed to have the remains of a Forfar Bridie down his raincoat |

Who are the 2 that I mentioned who are still trading Cashy? Was it Tim Brown (Hull) and Sid Hooper? Tim Brown (Hull) is definately no longer trading - are you thinking of Tim Brown that posts on here? I dont know Sid Hooper, they were trading before the reforms but I thought they were finished.
