Subsequently getting turned down for the steward's job really put his nose out of joint.  Words to the effect of how much more experience could they possibly want?  On a par with McGrath for his total arrogance!

Even Sir Peter O'Sullivan (a true legend) went on for too long.

bosra shame

Not come a day too soon  - dreadful commentator. All the same phrases " by a neck , by a half ",  " 4, 5,6 lengths clear " etc etc. Not to mention the dreadful 1999 Derby " ... and I swear it's Oath " which I think was his death knell on Channel 4.
I was said good morning to him at York car park and he totally blanked me.

How did he know it was you BS?

Agree O'Sullivan was a legend & went on for 5 years too long at least, kept transposing the horses names & felt sorry for him as it should have been his employers should not have it allowed it to continue.  He was universally well liked & loved the game so didn't want to retire

The same can definitely not be said of Goode.  He wasnt fit to lace O'Sullivan's drinks

Honest Scouser - I hope you don't think I was comparing GG to O'Sullivan. I was merely pointing out that GG is not alone in going on too long. In fact to be fair to GG I don't think he's any worse than some of the others.

re:saying hello to people

im sorry, but unless you know him on a personal level you have no business saying hello to him, or anyone else, at a racecourse or anywhere else. or did you just say hello because he was "off the telly"??

do you go around saying hello to every stranger you meet? i dont think so

No Dayjur, I don't - but then again, I don't expect to be ignored when we are the only 2 people in the car park, five foot apart from each other on a non race day early in the morning. I was merely being polite and it's a sad world you live in if you feel only people you know personally can say Good Morning to you

as an ex pro footballer i was taught to treat everyone with respect and sign autographs,if goode blanked you like that i think he was a disgrace, you should have told him what you thought of him there and then bosra, mind you he does look the type to blank people, looks a right toff.good riddance to an awfull commentator.

No strong feelings either way about the man,so happy retirement GG.However, race calling can't be easy and after calling so many races must be hard not to repeat your favourite phrases, all sports commentators do it to some extent.Just hit the mute button and try it yourself.

In my humble opinion a whole generation of races were ruined by his rubbish commentaries...

He was alright I suppose, appreciate not an easy job to do, but bit too smug for me.

Sounds like Dayjur must be related to GG with that attitude.Maybe people will say the same about you when you retire if not already retired

For the record Dave Smith has also been relieved of his commentaries for those that didn't know. Official line: contract not renewed.
I don't know whether he has done his last one but only 3 potential days left for him. GG does Uttoxeter on Friday

As others have pointed out, the King George commentary when Desert Orchid won for the last time was truly horrible, and runied the race for ever, imo.

Spewing out a stream of pre rehearsed cliches such as the horrible 'The King's in his counting house', 'will the Orchid Bloom', and 'he's been here before' (about three times), was virtually all he contributed from the second last onwards. Add that to other horror shows like 'I swear it's Oath' etc etc.

Compare that to Sir Peter's moments of genius for Red Rum's last National and Dawn Run's Gold Cup, for example, both of which made those races far more memorable, and you can see why, imho, Goode was very lucky to have had the opportunities he did in his career...
