If anyone's able to do it the card for the 1972 Whitbread might be worth posting. It reads like a who's who of the sport at that time. One of the best renewals ever. Sad what the race has now become.

I loved the Grand National from an early age and my first two winners of the race, Mr What and Nicholas Silver, were favourites of mine along with Pas Seul and a little later the hunter Snowdra Queen.

Used to always look out for DONE UP, a steeplechaser late 1950 early 60s. Ran in a lot of the big races on a Saturday back then not sure if he won many though.
I can't remember who rode or trained him. Would love to know if anyone here has any info. In later years I named a greyhound after him. Alas, poor old dog did not turn out to be much.

Koi, I was big fan of Floyd as well. Seem to remember backing him winning the County at one Festival, although I mainly think of him as a 3 miler. I'm sure he had a bad fall at Kempton or Sandown and took a long time to get up to thunderous cheering (although might be mixed up with French Goblin).

DONE UP was trained by Ryan Price, and usually ridden by Fred Winter. His big day was winning the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1959, beating Mandarin a short head. The top 4 in the weights were Saffron Tartan 12-0, Mandarin 11-11, Taxidermist 11-8 andd Kerstin 11-8 (3 of those won a Cheltenham Gold Cup); Done Up was 6th in the weights on 10-13. Saffron Tartan jumped them silly for 3 miles+, then faded. Done Up got behind early, then passed them one by one and battled with Mandarin from the last. He'd been brought down at Bechers in the Grand National, and had then run in the Scottish National at Bogside just a week before the Whitbread, on hard ground, with 11-11. Harry Sprague, who was a hurdles jockey, came out of retirement to ride him at Sandown as Fred Winter was injured. Harry had lost some fitness, and threw up afterwards, ejecting his false teeth in the process.

Done Up raced as a 2yo for A Kerr, and then as a juvenile hurdler for Ryan Price. He ran in handicap hurdles as a 4- and 5yo, but was then off injured for 2 years, before reappearing as a novice chaser as an 8yo (he was 9 when he won the Whitbread). He wouldn't have been the only horse Price brought back from a long term injury, but apparently his owner, Mr J U Baillie, had a lot to do with it, nursing him and walking him when he was broken down.

Remember Derring Rose very well , won at Ascot one day under John Francome and ran in snatches as always , the ride that day would be a contender for ride of the millennium.

Royal Judgement memory was runner up in the Welsh National trying to give Burrough Hill Lad around 19lb , an impossible task if ever there was one.

Vodkatini was unruly at the start unless i'm confusing with another horse , often whipped around and refused to race but very talented when consenting to race.

Great thread and good decision to resurrect   

Vodkatini only refused twice,trainer usually stood behind him with a Long Tom and got him going.

Coonawarra an old fav of mine in my youth, was hoping he'd win the Arkle, met an unfortunate end at Liverpool

The mention of Corporal Clinger brings back memories. Can’t remember the race but I went into my local Ladbrokes and had £5 ew on at 10/1. I wrote the price on the bet about 10.30am. Later found out it had won at 11/2 and pleased for once I’d beat the bookie. When I went to collect they paid me at 11/2 stating that the person taking the bet had not initialled it. I asked them to check the price at 10.30am but they refused. Never had another bet with Ladbrokes and it has cost them a fortune.

Foyles reference to older horses reminded me of Mac Vidi,raced into mid teens I think,also Peaty Sandy though not sure how old.My maternal grandfather gave us a horse for hunting and showing,an unraced son of Vulgan.would his progeny still be around in the 70s or would he be the grandsire by then?

Most of the traditional jumping yards still had a Vulgan or two in the 70's. Fulke Walwyn with The Dikler and also with Exhibit B who ran in one of the Embassy Finals.

Vulgan died in 1968 at the age of 25. His last offspring were foaled the following year.

He was champion NH sire 10 times, the last time in 73/74.

His son Fort Vulgan, then aged 9, ran in the 1977 Grand National (brought down at the 4th) for Ken Oliver, and I'm sure he was represented by offspring a few times after that.

Vulgan is one of only 2 horses to have sired winners of the Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup, and Grand National. He was a decent stayer on the flat (he won the Queen Alexandra at Ascot as a 5yo having been 2nd in the Gold Vase 3 days earlier), whereas the other one once got beat in a selling hurdle at Bournemouth.

Collins won the Foxhunters at Cheltenham, and the Pardubicka, and rode third in the Grand National. I recall he was quite a big lad too but not sure - what am I saying, lad!! - he is 10 years older than me.

Didn't Mac Vidi get placed in The Gold Cup when he was about 14 ?

Mac Vidi was 15! dambuster, the oldest horse placed in a Gold Cup.  Re Sonny Somers, I think he won his last race aged 18; he certainly raced at 18.

Sonny Somers won twice during a February, aged 18, Southwell and Lingfield, over 3 miles. Sprinted away from his rivals on the last occasion and won by 5.

Remember Osbaldeston also trained by Fred Winter i think , ran as an old timer but not sure he was anywhere near Sonny Somers age.

Yes dambuster Mac Vidi promoted to runner up behind Master Smudge due to the Tied Cottage disqualification , remember it well ( i think ) as Border Incident unshipped Francome when cantering around 3 out , Francome quoted after the race he'd have won by a minute 

Another good chaser that Winter trained was Observe. Never quite top class but had his big day when winning the Foxhunters at 33/1 under Charlie Brooks. I could not believe the price on the day. Only a memory post so please check my facts! A few years earlier I was at Exeter when a horse I part owned called Meister won his first novice hurdle and we then backed Flurry Knox (also Jim Old trained) without Observe who was odds on in a conditions chase. He was around 5/1 without and the right result ensued until Mr. Ed Whettam forgot to weigh in! Meister won the Bristol Novice at Cheltenham next time out-my only ever Cheltenham win as an owner. Flurry Knox and Meister were both useful chasers.
