Talking of old jumpers, what about Fred Winter's old stalwart Sonny Somers. In February 1980 he became the oldest horse ever to win a race in Britain aged 18.
|
By:
Yes remember him fondly , also he had Osbaldeston who ran until a similar age I think although not quite 18.

Who could forget the classy but enigmatic Derring Rose, trained by Fred Winter. Derring Rose is one of only 4 horses to complete the Long Walk - Stayers Hurdle double in the same season. What a character he was.

By:
Sonny Somers. That horse loved its jumping.

Two weeks before breaking the record he won at Lingfield ridden by 7lb claimer Ben de Haan.

Burrough Hill Lad.
remember when Laddys layed him at massive odds compared to their competitors for the Gold Cup. Jenny P was sure that her phone had been tapped and they'd misheard her talking about another beast. BH< duly won. Mercy Rimell winning the Champion Hurdle with Gaye Brief when it was a two horse race ante-post and the other jolly was pulled out. Anyone remember its name? |
By:
Yes I remember them all - was Narvik trained by Neville Crump?
|
By:
Saw Francome winning on Derring Rose once at Ascot ( I think ) and if betfair was around he must have hit at least 500 before winning , a character with enormous ability
|
By:
You're spot on HAYDEN I watched the race on BBC. The horse pulled himself up but Francome got him going again and managed to win. Think it was a 2m 4f hurdle race, can't remember which one.

When anyone mentions Neville Crump I immediately think of Arcturus & richdee

I think you're right Hayden. But I'm sure the going went against it. Or so the bookies thought. Out and out stayer who handled the mud.

REmember going to kempton in about 1980 and watching John Cherry getting turned over at odd on by a horse that was tailed off half way, the horse at the time was trained by A.Jarvis (i think)and it was called ...DERRING ROSE...I think F.Winter took over after that.
