Here's 2 real old codger's for you. Does anyone remember Mouldy Old Dough and Yes Yes Yes. They were regulars at Newton Abbot and Devon and Exeter (as it was known then) in August and September at the start of every new NH season. They were not very good but they were old friends who came back to greet you every year. Because of summer jumps you no longer get the buzz of anticipation that heralded the start of a new season.

someone mentioned Boom Docker, i am sure that was the horse that led Red Rum's 3rd grand national, from memory and watching the race again over the years it was a distance clear before refusing 2nd time around, Charlotte Brew road in the same race as the first ever female to ride, a race full of history.

Aflash Imp I was on at 33 for that Sandown Handicap Hurdle, backed down to Fav. race abandoned. Ran a cracker to be placed in The Champion Hurdle.

I'll never forget that race koi. Bill Smith rode for the Queen Mum but rode Diamond Edge that day. Kevin Mooney rode Special Cargo. Every time I watch the race I cannot believe he's going to win.

Remember Different Class very well , started fav for the National and was owned by the world famous actor Gregory Peck. Pauli Border Incident was my favourite horse of all time , visited the Richard Head stable one day and what a memorable day that was , the two nightmare quotes that still haunt me are when POS commentated " and John Francome has been unshipped from Border Incident " and the Francome post race quote of " I'd have won by a minute " all following the 1980 Gold Cup , think his finest moment was beating Bunker Hill in the Embassy chase final then run at my local track Haydock , even more frustrating to see old Mac Vidi & Master Smudge fill the places in that gold cup and it was opportunity lost for such a brilliant but injury prone horse  |

lanzarote wherethe 2 star hurdlers when I 1st got into racing along with Captain Christy Lescargot Ten Up as chasers. However Sea Pigeon was star of the show for me. Fighting 5th with Birds nest & pollardstown was a cracker(pigeon getting it in the stewards room)81 champion hurdle with francome was pure poetry still have that days footage on video. Recall Night Nurse /Monksfield & Sea Pigeon running in the R.Doulton hcap hurdle @ Haydock & getting beat by Royal Gaye(whos dam by the way was Artist Gaye dam of subsequent ch hurdler Galas Image mentioned earlier) |

Just looking @ a thread above with Im a Driver absolute tearaway who flew his fences along with Wayward Lad(as fluent & economic chaser your ever likely to see) plus The Mighty Mac who was superb jumper.

Border Incident was a fine horse who was sadly plagued by injuries and setbacks of one kind or another. In the 2 seasons before the 1980 Gold Cup I think he only ran 2 or 3 times. However, as you say, he proved himself a chaser of the highest class when winning the Embassy. Master Smudge won that Gold Cup at 14-1, Mac Vidi 2nd at 66-1 and Approaching was 3rd at 11-1.

Any Tied Cottage fans out there I would urge you to spend a couple of minutes reading this article on the horse , may be a contender for the unluckiest horse not to win a gold cup due to this race and the fall at the last the previous year , mind you Pendil would be a strong contender for that title also.

hi hayden,think pendil was brought down by high ken in one gold cup,and a major groan went up from the packed stands.a lot of punters blamed dick pitman for being directly behind the big outsider.think high ken was ridden by the now ludlow coc bob davies,dont hold me to all these facts as it was a long time ago!

Yes mate a painful memory especially following the narrow defeat by The Dikler the previous year , the clip joins the race at the incident but more drama to follow with that mistake at the last by the Captain , what a great horse he was on his day

I was always keen on the Turnell horses.
Apart from the obvious Flash Bulb Rondetto Buona Notte Tree Tangle Beau Normand Beacon Light Bird`s Nest Meon Valley He used to switch them between hurdles and chases a lot more than most top trainers in those days. Haine and King were joint stable jockeys in the 60s. Andy Turnell took over in the early 70s I think. |

Royal Tan won the National in the year I was born. I once saw a programme about Alex Bird. He had backed Tudor Line ante-post to win around £1,000,000. Tudor Line was beaten a neck by Royal Tan. That's some serious ante-post punt that almost paid off. Losing by a neck after four and a half miles you'd be gutted to say the least. I think I'd be phoning the Samaritans.

Just to make you feel at home ditchbert , an old newsreel of Royal Tan winning the national ( follows a short advert ) , my god a mistake at the last and still would have probably won in another 2 strides

always liked the edward courage owned horses as a kid as johnny cook rode most of them,spanish steps but also royal relief.milton bradley used to have jumpers in those days and won countless races with a horse called mighty marine.the jumps seemed to have more charecters and personalitys in those days!(sorry about my spelling)
