Capital Blue , remember that late finish well , the bookies closing time by law was 6.30pm in those days in March and i'm sure it was very close to the deadline

Hayden i was actually managing 1 of the Billy Mountains shops that day. Think the gold cup went off around 5:40 so would have been 6:15 ish for the cathcart .
Wayward Lad was legless that day up the run in (not for the 1st time ) @ the festival. Just wasnt his track. |

Do any of you remember an Easterby horse called King Weasel. He had the dreaded x next to his name in Timeform. He ran up a sequence of chase wins but his jumping left alot to be desired. I backed him a few times and it was a scary experience - you had to listen in the bookies. I even backed him one day against none other than Border Incident. He made 2 monumental mistakes but stayed on his feet. However, Border Incident beat him with ease and I don't think the mistakes made any difference to the result. He ran twice at the 1980 Festival - thrashed by Chinrullah (later disqualified) in the Champion Chase on day 1 and won the Cathcart on day 3 and, you've guessed it, I didn't back him.

Many fond memories have been evoked by this thread.
Don't recall having seen any mention of One Man,my no.1 vote in the RPs '100 favourite horses'poll of a few years ago. As a Plumpton regular I think that I should give a mention of Manhattan Boy,a winner of 14 races,but only ever at Plumpton and only ever in sellers or claimers(I believe). |

Remember the ill fated Alverton falling in a 2 horse race at Stockton, other runner tracking him was brought down! Jonjo caught Alverton quickly and won,odds 1/10

Probably worth another look at The Thinker's gold cup with all the talk about it , the clip only shows the last 50 secs but interesting the horse that led at the last and finished 2nd hasn't had a mention on the thread yet unless i've missed it

Just watched that race Hayden. Cybrandian trained by Peter Easterby. What a brave race he ran. He often found one too good for him didn't he? Was a big price that day. Funny how you only concentrate on the winners and sometimes forget about the other horses. Even noticed Wayward Lad in contention at the last but faded up that hill again.

Davy Blake was one of my favourites. He was basically a hunter chaser, but graduated to handicaps and got up to a mark of 135. He ran in 29 chases, 19 of them at Kelso, (all bar one over 3m+), where he won 8 times.
In his penultimate run, as a 12yo, he carried 12-0 in the 4 mile Borders National, made much of the running as usual, weakened at the 3rd last and dropped back to 8th, but never stopped trying and still ran past 3 horses on the run-in to finish 5th. |

Yes strange gold cup that one , The Thinker got very little credit for the win due to conditions and also I think people devalued the form with Grand National winner West Tip a close 4th , remember the punters taking a positive from the West Tip run and he was well backed to defend his National but finished 4th I think

Distinctly remember Red Rum & Red Candle fighting out the finish of a major race but can't quite recall which one , was it the Hennessy ?

One of my Favs in that race was Royal Marshall 11, who routed the field in around 74 or 75 Going on to the King George and Kempton in general, people always mention Dessie or Kauto, to me Captain Christys demolition Job of Bula ranks just as highly with me, as does Gloria Victis in the RP chase, we lost a star there, the time on soft ground he did that day was incredible and no fluke as he went faster than See More Business over c/d on the same day in the Feltham |

Yes slippy ans Sheikh owned , together with Coombs Ditch they were the horses that realistically could have prevented the Dickinson first 5 home in the gold cup , the rest though is history

Yes slippy owned another couple of top class horses in Gaye Brief and Half Free to name but two , also owned the brilliant unbeaten Deep Wealth who was tragically killed in action

S.T.S,in Nupsalas King George the 3 you mentioned apparently covered first 3 furlongs quicker than they did in that years guineas,Nupsala ran through beaten horses to hack up at 25/1,with Dessie left 15 length second after Forgive And Forget fell at last.

Topsham Bay was in the Timeform 50 to Follow for the 1989/90 season, and his first career victory was the National Hunt Chase at (I think) 40/1. I do know he paid over 60/1 on the Tote. Went on to win two Whitbreads, of course, and died earlier this year at the age of 27.

Just found an old link , didn't realise he won as many as 34 races
Supermaster won 34 races in all, and it was immensely appropriate that he was to provide his trainer with the 1,000th winner of his career. |

The mention of Grey Sombrero has just made me watch the 1973 National for the umpteenth time , forgotten how well the Grey was running in a clear 2nd place until falling at the chair , you never know if he'd travelled a bit further and gave Crisp some company maybe Red Rum would have had an impossible task , we'll never know.
