Yes Cajun won at Royal Ascot, he was forcast 4/1 cos all the tipsters had gone for something else. Opened 5/4, went 6/4 but only for about twenty seconds. Betting was different in those days, you could dodge around and usually beat the price but Ladbrokes were smashing it and I ended up taking 11/10 after most had finished betting, think it returned 10/11. It won ok but by the time of the Middle Park, Lester was trying to get off it to ride something else. Cecil made him ride it, and Lester made it win and it went off 20/1! But that was as good as he ever was. Brief candle.

I remember Henry having a horse called Wayne Lukas at the same time that D Wayne Lukas apparently had a horse called Henry Cecil. I think both may have raced in Ahmed Salman's Thoroughbred Corporation silks.

Great post pub reading this thread. Been a massive fan of the guy since I got into the game mid-80s and it's a disgrace he's not a Sir.
Glad someone mentioned Diminuendo's Yorkshire Oaks - annihilated a G1 winner in Sudden Love, and took a huge chunk off the York 12f course record (3 seconds ?) despite being eased right down in the final furlong. Think it was one of Henry's rare mistakes to run her in the Leger on softening ground afterwards, a Diesis filly who had started the season over less than half that distance in the Nell Gwyn was always gonna be pushed to stay.
Henry's had loads of champions over the years, but arguably never quite had what you'd call an all-time great. Horses like Ardross, Kris, Oh So Sharp, Reference Point, Indian Skimmer, Old Vic and Bosra Sham came close, but I'd love to see him have a Nijinsky or even a Sea The Stars before he gives the game up.

High Estate and Be My Chief other colts who didnt fulfill their 2 yo promise.
Vacarme was a hilarious episode (Richmond Stakes?) where Wilenstein, possibly the most temperemental owner in history threw his toys out of the pram after a clever Piggott ride didnt work out.

Anyone mentioned Cluade Monet .. had a 100 quid as a student a lot for me then and took 2s antepost at a Joe's the Dante ... it won at around 6s with the great Cauthen up and so my antepost career could only get better even though he won!

Carmelite House and Samoan were others who didn't really train on about that time. Thorn Dance aswell, although he hustled up Kerrera at Haydock as a 3yo.
Salse was a super consistent colt, though he was found out by Warning in the QEII

Yeah Samoan was 2nd in High Estate's Royal Lodge. Also ran a few weeks later in the Scenic/Prince Of Dance dead-heat Dewhurst but finished out the back door.
Did win a noddy race somewhere as a 3yo, Newcastle maybe.

Sleepytime is my favourite filly of Henry's. And the grey horse, the Skimmer, she was beautiful. I quite like this Midday though, she's not finished yet.

Pat Eddery rode Russian Bond to win its debut at Yarmouth(cauthen was off injured)Pat said it was the best 2 y old he`d ever ridden. W Ryan won on him in the Mill Reef at Newbury , not sure what happened to him after that.

Fidway - they were about that time. Don't forget Simply Great, exceptionally good in the morning but never really reproduced it in the afternoon - same for Brigata and Killer Instinct. Nobody could believe it was the same Brigata that turned up at the races,I think she was tailed off twice and they then drew stumps. She was quite exceptional on work mornings - plenty of the lads were skint afterwards

Its Ebor week so lets not forget Kneller hosing up in '88 (I was there when he sliced through the field like the proverbial knife through butter under P Eddery) and Tuning a decade or so later under Fallon. I had my first fiver on one of his un-raced maidens at Yarmouth called Be My Valentine. Won under Piggot at odds on and my overriding memory as a fifteen year old in 1982 was completely **** myself at the thought of loosing a whole weeks paper round and pocket money! Happy days??

never learn club. Im convinced it was Cauthen who rode Russina Bond on its debut. It was 1 of those races you watch that stick in the mind & can still picture it now(yep it is definetly Cauthen)moving up on the outside with Russian Bond pulling his arms out. Cumani also had a hoss in the race began with S but cant recall full name that despite getting a complete mullering from Russian Bond won next time up. @ that time Henry had them fully revved up & knew their job inside out showing very little signs of inexperience on debut. Compared to today where a few still win on debut, but still have plenty to learn/improvement in the tank to come.
Not sure wheter either of these have been called but 2 spring to mind(cumanis) Critique 1m4 group horse with attitude, Hello Gorgeous & Gayane

Desert Sun, another morning glory. Winter 2000gns fav, HRAC ended up running him over all sorts of distances to try and get a performance resembling his gallops form.

Going to be hard to compare with the likes of Oh So Sharp , depends what you mean by the definition of best horse and you'll probably only have the performances up to 10f to compare whereas Oh So Sharp effectively won the " triple crown"

Yep, may have raced in the same green and white colours as Be My Chief and Faraway Dancer, which reminds me - when Faraway Dancer ran in the Dee Stakes at Chester, there was an article in the RP about the lad who looked who looked after him. He was fighting leukaemia at the time but would be leading up the horse.I remember being around the paddock and hearing Michael Stoute's travelling head lad Jimmy Scott teasing him in jest with a 'you think your famous now' or words similar. Can't remember the name of the lad or if he managed to pull through.

Round about 1978 or 9 he had a good one sounded like Afghanistan. Anyway finished second first time up when I suppose was expected and I had a weeks wages on it. Been trying to remember it's name for the last twenty years. Anybody help? By the way I worship the man. Just seems a very good bloke. Mentioned it before but after a days racing at Donnie a few years back he was in a big beigeie coloured Merc at the top of Town Moor Avenue at the lights opposite me in Doncaster and as I drove past him he smiled in that spontaneous way he does. Will treasure that moment for ever.

I fail to comprehend some people's obsession with this man. As far as I can determine, he is a public school educated aristocrat who has trained racehorses for a living. Unless I have missed something, he is not a great philanthropist nor has he made any noteworthy contribution to the human race other than teaching horses to run fast on behalf of their wealthy owners. Nothing odd about not changing the course of the human race, this is the story for 99.99% of us. For liberator to treasure the moment when Henry Cecil 'smiled' at him at some traffic lights is more than a little peculiar.

Scimitara - fav for the Oaks I believe but unfortunately broke down. Cecil loved the horse and when it walked back to its box he didnt need to hold its reins as the horse was so relaxed and trusting. Hopefully she recovered to live out her days in the fields.
I remember Diminuendo. I was undecided on whether to back her or Dabaweya (sorry about the spelling) in either Oaks. For a young lad at the time, I had alot of money going onto Dabaweya. Needless to say, Diminuendo was awesome and I lost

I remember working in a bookies in the late 80s and a bloke came in raving about one of Henrys horses that hadnt ran yet saying it was the best 2yo he"d ever had? we were all young and naive back then and got 1000/1 off my boss for it to win the 2000 guineas and the derby the following year? The horse in question was called GIANTS CASTLE and i dont even think it ran as a 2yo i think it made its debut in the wood ditton but dont quote me? Needless to say it didnt even run in the guineas or derby and i do believe it ended up over hurdles?
