That's opinion for you ( no qualified view myself ) following the Cesare win threads appeared stating he was better than ever , a jockey is only as good or bad as his last ride on a gambling forum.

Each to their own opinion I guess  Grin

Age has caught up with Fallon he is not as good as he was and he certainly is not going to get better. The number of rides he is offered will get less and he will be forced to retire soon
Report FrankRA July 19, 2010 4:13 PM BST
I dont think the ride on CESARE was anything special, any half decent jockey would have won on it the way the race was run,and he made a meal of that, there were 4 runners 1 was a no hoper the other 2 were Godolphin horses, one of which set a decent pace, all he had to do was track the pacemaker,YAMAL the other Godolphin runner simply dogged it,there was nothing special about the ride imo.

ok watch fallon winning on tartan gunna i think it was at Epsom and tell me the guy is past it, absolutely top class jockey.

He just doesnt get the rides he used too, stick him on a top class horse and i would trust him too get it home more than any other jockey, he very rarely gives a bad ride.

As a layer he's been an asset to me.  Have made good money laying him recently.  It's there to see he's NOWHERE as strong as he used to be.  We all get old simple as.  That's why sports people retire at a certain point.  It's time for u Ennis man.  Sorry to say

He is riding poorly, there are plenty of jockeys out there just as good or even better,14% strike rate says it all, even Channon is using him less, its only a matter of time before Cumani drops him, when he ridden a class horse hes c0cked up  (PRESVIS 3 times, hes even lost the rides on YOUMZAIN and MUSIC SHOW to HUGHSIES,to me that says it all,he is a has been and should retire.

The one winning ride you pinpoint was an excellent ride ,nothing more, take your rose coloured spectacles off and watch some of the other winning rides from some of the lesser popular jockeys, then maybe youll put things into perspective.
Report ima_mazed66 July 19, 2010 9:34 PM BST
Lets see then, when he was up north riding run of the mill horses for Fitzgerald he was OK, he then got on a better class of horse for the Ramsdens and was better, gets the job riding even classier horses for Cecil, Stoute and Ballydoyle and is brilliant (has ridden more English classic winners than Dettori) scratching around for rides now after his ban.......anyone see a pattern forming here?

You are only as good or bad as the horses you ride and there's nothing in it ability wise between a dozen or so of the top riders, which is why Fallon, Kinane and Murtagh were all able to win Ascot Gold Cups on a horse like Yeats.

When Fallon lost the Cecil job he walked straight into the Stoute one and was successful. Had he gone freelance and again been scratching around for rides (although probably less so then as he was still champion jockey) what do you think might have happened? Same with Kinane when he lost the Ballydoyle job, with plenty saying he was past it but look what happened when he got the Oxx job and think what might have happened if he didn't.

Ed Dunlop's just done the Epsom/Irish Oaks double for the second time after Ouija Board but do you think Fallon wouldn't have won on Snow Fairy at the weekend?
Report ima_mazed66 July 19, 2010 9:44 PM BST
Sorry for the double post but just about everyone's lost the ride on Youmzain (including Hughes himself) and Fallon's 2 wins from 2 rides on Music Show, one time each as a 2YO in the Rockfel and first time out as a 3YO in the Nell Gwynn.

As far as I'm aware he didn't lose the ride but was committed to Seta for Cumani in the 1,000 and Ryan Moore ride her there, in the Irish 1,000 and at R Ascot without winning on her.
Report jamilla14 July 19, 2010 10:09 PM BST
I would like to point out that Fallon himself directed Luca Cumani towards Ryan Moore taking the ride on the very tricky Presvis having himself failed to get the best out of the horse
.Moore accepted the challenge and duly won on his next ride aboard that animal.I cannot see many other jockeys doing that yet for me this indicates an acceptance of fallability, something not to be associated with the Kieren of old.
Report guidofawkes July 19, 2010 10:13 PM BST
In the 1st at Yarmouth he was terrible. The Fallon of old would have 22told" the horse what to do, the fella on it today had a lively discussion all the way round and the horse still hadn't decided what to do at the lineSadVery sad to see the great man on his way down but he deserves an horrid end to his career for his sinsShocked
Report ima_mazed66 July 19, 2010 10:35 PM BST
Not trying to be rude here guidofawkes but it might be worth watching the race video again on ATR a couple of times.

Fallon's horse was the first off the bridle with 4 furlongs to go and was 3-4 lengths off the still cruising winner at the time. Fallon's taught the horse what it's like to be in a race today and was doing all of his best work at the finish, without knocking the b0ll0ocks out of a once raced 3YO maiden that never ran as a 2YO.

What would be the point of ruining the horse in a £2,267 maiden at Yarmouth when it has its whole career ahead of it?.....And it still only lost by a short head when looking booked for 3rd.
Report FrankRA July 19, 2010 10:35 PM BST
Fallon gave MUSIC SHOW a terrible ride in the Nell Gwynn even though she won the race,he gave her an unnecessarily hard race allowing the filly to lose her position which ultimately meant he had to drop back to the rear of the field to get a run, switching virtually around the whole field he made up a lot of ground quickly and only just held on,he chose SETA over MUSIC SHOW this was well documented at the time, and in the race road like an amateur,he sat in the stand side of the middle group and clearly see that was where the pace was but he stayed in the middle group until that had such a clear advantage it was clear he needed to switch towards the stand side by which time they had gone beyond recall.

His last 3 rides on YOUMZAIN have also been poor ,they have been too aggressive, all ending in sound defeats.

And his ride on PRESVIS was a joke ,since he has been back he appears to have trouble holding hard pullers and he cant get horses to settle.

In short he should give up now like all the top jocks have done while they are at the top or very near it.
Report ima_mazed66 July 19, 2010 10:44 PM BST
That winning ride you describe FrankRA sound very much like the one Hughes gave her when he won on her last time and maybe the ride Fallon gave her when he won on her ultimately helped.

Here are the after race comments for Fallon's win:

Midfield early, ridden over 2f out, switched right and headway over 1f out, ran on strongly to lead close home (tchd 22-1 and 33-1)

He wins on the horse at 25/1 and still gets stick for it. I suppose there's no pleasing some people eh? Silly
Report VALUEMAN July 19, 2010 10:46 PM BST
He is deffo on the decline, remember he hasn,t been the cleanest of living souls and the injuries catch up eventually....for me he was at his best riding for the Ramsdens in the north, when the money was down of course
Report ima_mazed66 July 19, 2010 11:03 PM BST
Oops sorry, made a bit of a c0ck up there and the comments and price were for the previous time Fallon won on Music Show. The Nell Gwynn ones were:

Held up, switched left and headway over 2f out, led over 1f out, edged right, driven out (op 5-1 tchd 7-1)

She was also giving 3lbs to the field that day, including the 1st past the post in the 1,000 and was drawn 11 of 11 so was up against the far rail and hemmed in, but I'd much rather my jockey make the switch far enough out to ensure they get a run and have enough time to make it, than to sit and suffer on the inside if the gaps don't come.

He still only gave her 3 taps of the whip too so not what I would call a hard race to me eyes.

No way Fallon is as good as he was, seems to take an age to get a response out of a horse and I no longer add a few pounds onto a rating of a horse for him being in the saddle.  The once feared and renowned Fallon Drive is no more.

There are signs that the old magic is there when he gets on the right horses. The problem is the big trainers seem to be deserting him for whatever reason. I was suprised stoute chose peslier over kieren for harbinger, a horse which needs strong handling. OPeslier is a very good jock but strong he aint.
Report mactheknife July 20, 2010 12:09 AM BST
Sir Michael stood by him in the past when others deserted Pan looks like his time in the top echelon has expired.
Report ima_mazed66 July 20, 2010 12:15 AM BST
Regarding his injuries, the main one he had was to his shoulder after a fall at R Ascot as far back as 2000 and when he came back he was champion for the next 3 seasons. Even when he wasn't the cleanest of living, it didn't stop him winning big races and had just won a Group 1 in France when he failed the test.

He's younger now by a good few years than Piggott, Carson and Pat Eddery were when they retired and Carson is the perfect example of what can happen when you get the horses, riding Don't Forget Me, Nashwan, Shadayid, Salsabil, Dayjur and Erhaarb all between his mid to late 40s and early 50s.

He is still a good rider but like the crazy hype over Tiger Woods, Roger Federer et. al. the media and some punters seem to put certain people on another level when they are in fact little or no better than the next 10 or 20 of their opponents. Why are we discussing an ageing ex champion jockey when we have exciting riders like Moore, Hanagan and Buick around?
