From another oldie - wasn't Ballymore's first run and win in the 1972 Irish 2000?

Haha just looked at that horse thats class, can't believe you can enter a horse thats never run in the derby . Surely your more likely runing another decent horses chances. Is it still allowed or is the only offputting factor having to pay the continued entrance fee.

Vincent obrien won the Irish 1,000 gns with a debutant in the late 70s early 80s somert beginning with L (Lisadell? but could be wide of the mark with the name)
Think Jim Bolger won the Goffs Million with Lush lashes 1st time up but dont think they are classed as a group race.
Report geoff m April 29, 2010 10:03 PM BST
Correction horse was Lady Capulet who won the irish 1,000 gns on her debut .
Lisadell was an Obrien filly that won the coronation stakes a few yrs earlier (but not on debut)
Report TiptheOdds April 29, 2010 10:38 PM BST
Didn´t Height of Fashion - top class racemare and dam of Nashwan, Nayef etc - make her debut at Royal Ascot? I think she won too if I´m not mistaken.

Report Slippy Blue April 30, 2010 1:30 AM BST
Think you are right foxy, Salsabil got beat a short head by Guy Harwoods Free At Last at Newbury on her second race. A very imprudent rise by Carson I thought on the day. She won at Longchamp the day Carroll House won the Arc. A tremendous horse Salsabil was, one of the best.
Report kach April 30, 2010 6:35 AM BST
Lipstick who for a fatal injury would have been a decent sprinter debuted in a lsited at Newbury, went on to run in the French Guineas.

Paul Cole runs his best unraced 2yos in a Listed race at Deauville for unraced horses.
ABBEYSIDE, who runs today, is one such.
Report geoff m April 30, 2010 6:53 AM BST
Tip the odds.
Dont think Height Of Fashion ran/won @ Royal Ascot on debut wasnt really Herns style.
Seem to think she won the Acomb on debut same race as Gorytus bolted up in.
Report darkroom April 30, 2010 8:32 AM BST
Evening Chorus for Rod Simpson in the 2000 Guineas (he didn't win).Aidan O'Brien gave Juniper his debut in the Gimcrack. Roger Charlton ran Frenchmans Bay in the Horris Hill. Channon ran Nahoodh in the Cherry Hinton.Noverre To Hide another for Best in the Molecomb, there have been two or three 2yo debutants in the Pattern 2yo races at Royal Ascot (Brian Meehan has done it a couple of times, Miss Deeds for Littmoden and L'Orage for John Ryan in the QM are others and there are a few more). Clive Brittain a few including Jabbara in the Musidora. Eastwell Manor for Dave Morris in the Solario.

Finally a quiz question - which horse that has finished in the first four at the Cheltenham Festival in each of the last three years made his racecourse debut as a 2yo in a Group race?

Report infomaniac April 30, 2010 11:02 AM BST
Yeah, Clive ran a lot of no-hopers in group races but sometimes hit the jackpot,

and Henry Cecil tried by starting the once raced maiden Distant View in the 2000 guineas but only finished 5th imo.

special duty started in a pattern race
Report paul22 April 30, 2010 11:40 AM BST
If i was a reasonably small trainer i.e best, if i had a superstar i wouldnt go listed/group race first time out id get it in a tinpot maiden and have my absolute conkers on it to pay for the stable for the year! Then go pattern race etc
Report geoff m April 30, 2010 11:51 AM BST
The connections of Chief Singer wouldnt agree.
They were able to get plenty on @ large prices due to the strength of the market.
Wouldnt have had a prayer of doing it to that extent in a run of the mill maiden.

connections of Celtic Swing (winner of Racing Post trophy as a 2 year old and the French Derby among other things) badly burnt their fingers trying just that in a median auction race on debut !

My mind works in mysterious ways,

the horse that came 4th was an odds-on shot trained by none other than The Ramsdens :0
