I appreciate there's a time delay, but where is the longest delay?

Best place is Exchange shop or bookie. That way you aren't quickest but get to see all the racing with a reasonable 1.5 sec delay. Up against you are peo[ple on course and those watching raw feeds on sat and net. As long as you know where you stand you can bet safely.

If you take in-running seriously you have to have the right gear for the job. Make sure you have Broadband - dialup is a waste of time. Liquidity is the most important thing in-running so use the Betfair exchange. Try and have another PC so that you have a backup. Have 2 TVs - 14" is fine - I find CRT has better pics, although they are bulky compared to LCD/TFT. Use "one-click" software. This enables you to preset odds to both back and lay, as well as overriding any odds that are set in Betfair. As the name suggests you only need click to click once to enable your bet. Some of these are standalone and don't even require you to have the Betfair site open in your browser. If you are new to in-running concentrate on either backing or laying - it is very difficult (at least for me) to think of both during a race. Betfair auto-refreshes its prices every 30 seconds, which is hopeless for in-running. There are some standalone apps that can change this, while all one-click programs have it built in. Experiment with this and get it as low as possible without crashing your PC. Preparation is key - in the heat of battle it is too easy to make a mistake. I only buy the Racing Post (or, hopefully, the Sportsman - whichever is cheaper) for the horses' colours. I no longer read any articles in it and don't even take any notice of the prices. I then cut each race out separately and mark them up with my own shorthand. I mark up such things as nosebands, blazes, blinkers, cheekpieces, greys etc. I also circle the "well-known" colours. When it gets near to the race I even mark up the order that the first few in the betting appear on the Betfair list. Betfair now has an option to view the horses' colours next to their names but I will never use this until they develop a way of marking the screen. If JP or Nigel Shields have several in the race make sure you check the colours of their caps - this will save a lot of anguish as happened when Richard Hills wore a different cap for Sheikh Hamdam than was shown in the paper. Never, EVER, take the commentator's word for anything unless you see it yourself - you might miss a few bets but it will save your sanity (as well as a potential big loss) when they get it wrong. If you are using the Betfair site don't forget you have the option to change the colour of the lay side which might help you make fewer mistakes. If the same race is shown on CH4 and Sky please make sure you play in-running using the Sky version as some of us need to earn a crust. Don't forget that you can also bet on photo finishes. Wait until you see a still picture before you make your own mind up and even then make sure it is on the line - totally ignore the presenters as some of them are worse than useless with photos. Remember that you are betting on the official result, not the photo so that, if the "winner" is thrown out you lose. You could even lose if you get it right if the judge is on a different planet when looking at the photo. Complacency - it is sometimes easy to have very long winning streaks and think you are superhuman so you start clicking earlier than you should. This happened to someone on the BF forum and he lost £60K on one race in December - disaster for him and a nice Christmas present for another. Cheers, G-Man |

How can you bet in running on the course at the track ?
1. Racecourses don't allow you to take laptops in 2. You'd have to use one of those USB internet connections which are really slow. |

Essential tools for on-course trading:
"Betfair Rapid" account set at fastest speed (200 m/secs), revises 5 times a second. Set to single click back or lay, you pre-determine your stake from £2 to whatever..... "Iphone" or similar application displaying Betfair Rapid page. Must use a stylus to make selections, fingers are too large to correctly make bets. Can be dangerous in single click mode, you need to practice using small stakes before advancing to the 3 figure plus sums to bet & lay. Remember once you have committed yourself there is no going back !!! |
