My aim today was to pick a horse to lay to the tune of £50.

My bank at the start of the day was £441, I backed the first winner at Newcastle, the gambled on alston horse but only had pennies on, mistake number one, as I usually like to follow his yard, so should have had a decent bet onI then proceeded to do a stupid lay and lost to the tune of £245, I made the mistake of not backing to lay, and covering the loss, I then went against all my instincts and had £100 on the nose trying to chase and get the money back.

I then backed another few losers and ended up on the day with £39 in the bank, a harsh lesson earned, I am a total newbie at laying and I paid the price today.

I expect no sympathy

Report edwinchester April 26, 2010 8:58 PM BST
The Optician, I know thats what you feel like, you feel like just throwing the lot on a total ranker to try and win it all back, its a surreal feeling

Report OVERSEAS April 26, 2010 8:59 PM BST
thats the issue, bank management..regroup..build the bank and keep to within 5-10% of bank when playing..GL
Report edwinchester April 26, 2010 9:00 PM BST
Here since 2003? Blimey as long as that? just normally bet to win, only just started laying as I know fook all about it, and still don't I'm a small time £5 win and place merchant, not a big player normally. like I said totally lost it today
Report kauto_kauto April 26, 2010 9:00 PM BST
its all about learning from your mistakes, everyone has made the sort of errors you did today. its up you you if you learn from it and not chase and lose your discipline like this again.

thats what i think sets the good trader and the losssers on here.

good luck for the future.

I've had two big losing days this month laying, it happens. Learn from it, and come back stronger. gl
Report sweetchildofmine April 26, 2010 9:11 PM BST
edwin the fact you still have 39 pounds in your account is your saving grace...a real compulsive would have a zero balance having chased his self into oblivion
Report Broomwagon April 26, 2010 9:26 PM BST
If you have built up a reasonable bank over a period of time since last deposit/ withdraw then in one day because of one early mistake lose a significant chunk of it, the gut reaction is to chase and get that period of work time profit back. You can lose a weeks profit with a single mistake on a big liability hence try to keeps low liability i.e. 3/1 and under with only max 10% outlay on any one bet.
Think youll find most of us have done it and try to learn from it.

Edwin, I have been in the same position lots of times and no doubt in the not to distant future. If you can afford it reload your account and win the money back, give yourself a few weeks. There is to little left in your account to drag it back up it would take to long and really only be a waste of time. Good luck whatever you decide.

Report Johnny Wad April 27, 2010 9:10 AM BST
a good approach Ed, after a big hit the best thing you can do is start small and build the bank back up slowly. This helps build you confidence and if you are just on a bad run then further losses will just be small.

good luck!

Level stake single bets to win only is the only way to win at this game. Laying will not make significant profit in the long run

start small and rebuild your bank.

Usually I start off with 50p lays then work my way up to £1 then £1.50, £2 then £5, £10, £12.50 etc etc.

...............................................................................

how can u lay for 50p?? min bet is £2 no??
Report infomaniac April 27, 2010 11:19 AM BST
As long as you loose more than £2 it's ok,

there is a way to back less that £2 but I can't be bothered to explain, ta.
Report EastLower Gooner April 27, 2010 11:23 AM BST
50p and other sub £2 lays are easy to do.

THINK ABOUT IT.

i'm not going to tell u how I did it but I stumbled accross it one day by accident when I was trading out and miscalculated the amounts.
Report Johnny Wad April 27, 2010 11:28 AM BST
back for £2 at odds that won't be matched
then change stake to say £2.50, this will then give you 2 bets, one for 50p and one for £2
change the odds of the 50p to current (matchable) odds then cancel the £2 bet

Now you have a 50p bet

see it wasn't that difficult info
Report hearts1874 April 27, 2010 11:28 AM BST
