He clearly does not get on with the horse!
SIMPLES !
They seem to be fighting each other all the time .Denman wants to do his own thing but McCoy wont let him- so there is a conflict .
If they dont retire Denman then at least engage a jockey who is sympathetic to his style of running and jumping.
Its been painful to see both McCoy and Denman struggling
You could sense Denman was a beaten horse yesterday after the first two fences. He just looked as if he was labouring and not enjoying it.
Pause Switch to Standard View McCoy will never ride DENMAN again ?

So Denman struggling and hanging was APs fault?
Report Roger De Bris April 22, 2010 10:42 AM BST
was AP not on him in the Gold Cup?

Did it win the Gold Cup ??
Report Johnny Wad April 22, 2010 10:48 AM BST
my opinion for what it's worth is that McCoy was probably one of the most appropriate jockeys to ride Denman yesterday, he clearly didn't handle going right handed and the conditions in general. To lose 3 lengths at virtually every fence and more on each turn and still finish a close up 4th was some achievement by horse and jockey. At the odd occasion that Denman got on an even keel, McCoy just sat there and let him go about his business
Report brigust1 April 22, 2010 10:50 AM BST
Blackpool I struggle to understand your point of view because Cooldine never won the Gold Cup, Kauto Star never won the Gold Cup, War of Attrition never won the Gold Cup so what are you talking about. If all of the other horses running today or any day were winning everything and performing to the best every time they ran I would understand your stance but they don't so I haven't a clue what you are talking about. Horses get beaten, regularly. Some more than others.
Report kingscurate April 22, 2010 10:52 AM BST
Performed a minor miracle to get round, to come 4th was unbelievable.

Report Roger De Bris April 22, 2010 10:59 AM BST
mightnt have won the Gold Cup but a speed figure of 120+ would indicate to me they got on just fine, and would have won a few Gold Cups with that time in recent years.
Report Brother Mouzone April 22, 2010 11:02 AM BST
I would definitely agree that being beaten by Planet of Sound, War Of Attrition and Cooldine with Siegemaster, Tranquil Sea and Follow The Plan within five lengths was an unbelievable feat.

i think that gold cup win was the never to be reached again pinnacle of a very decent but head strong horse. obviously the heart scare business was a huge worry. since that gold cup success you never quite know what you are going to get, he seemed really tetchy yesterday before the race (before some of his best runs he didn't even look like he wanted to set off with the others!)

the race conditions were all wrong after another hard gold cup, jockey doesn't come into it imo, of course others are entitled to theirs regarding mccoy but they won't convince me he's done much wrong with this horse!
Report anfieldkings April 22, 2010 12:47 PM BST
i'd actually retire the horse now if it were mine and thats an honest statement too.
Report blackpood April 22, 2010 12:50 PM BST
Id go back to basics and put a jockey up that has got along wiv the horse in the past.
Report salmon spray April 22, 2010 12:52 PM BST
I am not convinced the Gold Cup WAS the pinnacle of his career, unless you assume Kauto was at his best ( which seems unlikely ). I think his Hennessy win this season was his best ever performance. Not as impressive as his first, but he was off a much higher mark and it looks as though it was a better field.

IMO the gold cup win slightly overated him ,everyone seemed to forget that KS had injury problems on the lead up to race . Likes these days to have an uncontested lead and looks like it cant put many runs together , since it had the heart problems . Maybe it was rushed back a bit quick and the 2nd gold cup took a lot out of it .

This yrs gold cup is as good as it is imo ....As for yesterday it just didnt like going RH and how anyone can blame AP for that is beyond me

Seems to have a few kinks these days
Report buddeliea April 22, 2010 12:56 PM BST
Cheers lads.
Totally agree about the jockey, laughable to blame him imo.Just dont like going Right Handed and should have been resting after his exertions in the GC.
Retirement may be an option, but i have a feeling we will see him next season after a good rest. Then we will see what happens.
Report blackpood April 22, 2010 12:59 PM BST
Thats it then AP was not to blame, and nobody is allowed their opinion :(
Report buddeliea April 22, 2010 1:05 PM BST
Not at all,you may be right, just dont happen to think so.
Report anfieldkings April 22, 2010 1:06 PM BST
i'm not sure about the merits of that salmon spray, ie kauto not at his best that day.

denman put in an almighty sapping display of relentless galloping that day, kauto didn't exactly blow a gasket and was not going backwards on the run in. just that day denman was an absolute machine on that ground.

i agree the hennesy was indeed an excellent acheivment (as was the 1st) and for people to crab a horse thats won 2 from top weight and a gold cup is beyond me.

for me the pinnacle will always be that blitz of a gallop in the GC though.

If RUBY had ridden Denman on his last three runs I wonder if the results would have been the same ?
I say give the mighty Denman a long rest or retire him but if he is to run again put up a jockey who can coax the best out of him and without using the whip with the relish and frequency that McCoy does.
It wasnt a pretty sight yesterday watching DENMAN "encouraged" to go faster.

The Cheltenham gold cup took a hell of a lot out of the 1st and 2nd,as both showed with their subsequent runs. They both went to the well once to often.
Report flyingbolt April 22, 2010 4:09 PM BST
If yesterday's race had been left handed Denman would have won by about 15 lengths so that doesn't tally with "going to the well once too often"
Report Brodie April 22, 2010 4:20 PM BST
He hung right handed but doesn't look in love with the game to me so lost thru a combination of both.
Impossible to know if he'd have won going lh.
