If you're driving Ed, suggest Harrogate or Wetherby. (Harrogate better for night life or restaurants)

Plenty of hotels, pubs , guest houses to choose from. :)

if you cant get in york, harrogate with all the hotels, restaurants and bars and even the smartest weatherspoons in the country, or hotel de vin for something a bit more expensive

Koo towers, York, scrumptious.

You could do worse than stay in Leeds. York and the immediate local is a tourist area and busy/expensive in summer. Leeds is more business orientated but has great nightlife and restaurants, and plenty of good hotels that tend to be quieter/cheap at weekends.

20 mins to York by train and there's millions of trains.
