3 Day meeting a Perth next week

As a novice on horse racing ans still learning about it i have a few questions :

- Is there horse racing every day of the year ?

- Flat is where there are no fences to jump ? what monthes of the year do the flat and jump seasons run from ?

what does "chase" mean ?

isnt a jump race harder to win unless the horse is a good jumper ?

please dont laugh at the above questions! Im a complete beginner to horse racing and trying to learn about it before dabbling with any bets on it !

you should learn something about learning and do an internet search or buy a book. you cant expect people on here to help you when you cant/wont help yourself.

I know nothing about netball but do you have to be able to throw good to score points. Sorry to ask but I'm a complete learner.

doesn't seem to be a cut off point nowadays.

they made a horse that can't jump for toffee odds on fav for one of the biggest jumps races of the year so the shrewd ones didn't seem to think so.

Jeeeeez i was almost sorry i asked, just thought knowledgeable people on here would be happy to help with the basics, not as if im asking for a system on how to win or anything like that

Im a football only bettor and if you asked me something about footy no matter how simple i would answer it for you. Football and Horse racing are the 2 main big sports betting wise on here so thought i would look at having a go at betting on the horses but as with any sport you need to the sport your betting on before diving in

I know what you mean mate, and I did go a little ott there.
Some people are genuine beginners and want bog standard advice.
The best advice however is ( it was given on here ) is to buy a book about racing.
H/R is a complicated game and reading a book can be educational and can drive your enthusiasm for the game. Books about H/R are a good read ( better than say a football book )

The Special One I advise you stick to football betting. There is too much to learn and it seems you are at the very bottom. Just master the one sport and you should be ok.

If you like the look of the game ( which is what we need to keep the game thrivng) then give it a go.
Its a f00king great sport.
I'm talking about punting and enjoying it, too many on here seem to think you've gotta be pro!

but cassidy is right ,you can do a lot of money. There are so many opportunities a day.
Get the book is my advice ,see if you like the puzzles of backing a winner but can control the cash ;)

Im a fast learner, not looking to master every minute detail of the sport, just enought of the basics so i can then decide where to specialise in further, e.g. backing or laying? betting ony on particular types of races, place betting, etc......

Google books by Mark Coton, Nick Mordin or Alan Potts. Not read many in a while so don't know who's rated but those names are respected.

The bottom line is .... If you have to ask such 'basics' about racing - meaning that you cannot suss them out for yourself - then you are, and ALWAYS will be, an absolute NON-RUNNER at raciing.

As for your offer to 'help' people with football betting. .... here is another home truth.

Football followers need to ask racing people about racing - because it is complicated and a very broad issue that VERY FEW truly understand.

Racing people do NOT need to ask football followers about football - because it is mostly 'in your face'....and simplistic to follow, especially compared to racing

Mark Coton gave the game up 20 years ago - 'found god' - and was last seen walkinhg along a beach in Cornawall

Nick Mordin lives in America, and has done for several years now - is a specialist' at 'back-fitting ' systenms retrospectively]( which anybody can do given the time and resources - but, 'surprisingly' they never then work in the future with hard cash down.

Alan Potts is a genuine guy - but many would not know what he truly meant by 'Against the crowd' - and even he will now tell you that his methodology no longer works as well since the restructuring of the racing programme.

As for me - well, I think you ought to re-appraise your somewhat 'snapshot' judgement.

He'll always be up against it if he asks questions like the above.

If someone or something is not good at something that it is trying to do of course its harder. Now this is real basic stuff in life not just horse racing.

You say you learn quick, well if you are going to try and crack horse racing, you better do it quicker or before you know it you'll be skint.

onlooker, the books are good enough for an intro to the game.
he's not asking for a how are you and where are you now update of the authors.
gathering knowledge about anything can be enjoyable.
books can do it.
you've done it.
judging someone's ability to enjoy the racing game because they like football too is absolutely idiotic, in fact quite unfathomable.

You could always watch the Morning Line - thats as basic stuff as you're going to get.

'Chase' is short for 'Steeplechase'.

This is because 300 years ago aristocrats used to race their hunting horses from one Church to another one that they could see the steeple of in the far distance ( so they were 'chasing' this steeple) .As this was in the countryside there were numerous hedges, ditches, boundary fences and stone walls between any 2 churches , so the horse had to be good at jumping.

This was very different from the more organized Racing at actual courses such as Newmarket and Ascot where there were no obstacles , just a ' flat' course .

Eventually , in the 1800s , racecourses were developed that had fences and obstacles comarable to those of the original cross country races so it became organized along the lines you see today.

Bet you read that somewhere ^^ ;)

You are entitled to your opinion on the general subject, Brodie, and your philanthropic approach is admirable. -

I am merely adopting a more realistic approach, and only trying to save the guy a LOT of wasted time, trouble, grief and MONEY.

You can 'play' football betting for just 90 minutes, a couple of days a week -
Horse racing, by contrast, is 24/7 362 days a year - done properly - Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Good Friday 'off' - although you could/should still be studying Boxing Day and Easter cards then. :)

However, your other opinion, of me, is 'a million' away from what you think.

Onlooker, you don't have to follow the horses 24-7 imo, you can always specialize in particular categories . I only follow the Group horses on the flat , don't take any interest in the jumps or handicaps of any type.

Okay onlooker I have read many of your posts and KNOW you know this game.
I was just shocked at your negative attitude towards a bloke who seems keen on coming into the game.
They are very rare in my experience and you know this sport needs 'em.
But yes, you were trying to protect his pocket and I suppose i got jealous, because YOU WERE'NT AROUND TO WARN ME YEARS AGO! :D

In any case i'd say understanding betting ( value, overounds etc) is at least as important as knowledge on the Sport you are gambling on.

Special one, all you need to know is this . 99% of non Grouip and listed races are** Most group and listed races are run to merit.

As a rule of thumb, the bigger the prize money, the less hookey the race is, flat or jumps.

And on a personal note I dont follow jumps. I prefer not to see horses being killed every other day jumping.
