Police are investigating an armed robbery on Sunday night during which trainer Howard Johnson was told he would be killed if he refused to open the safe at his County Durham stable.
Johnson was ordered to lay face down on the ground with a gun to his head while his wife Sue was brought down from the bedroom after being threatened by another man carrying a knife.
A sum in excess of £100,000 was stolen in the raid that happened shortly around 10.30pm.
Neither Johnson or his wife were hurt, but both were in deep shock on Monday morning.

Agreed, in fact the cynics out there might even question just how unlucky one guy could be. Makes you wonder just how cynical the local constabularly will be too.
Just got a funny feeling we might only be witnessing the first chapter of this saga tbh...
Howard has had more than his fair share of troubles over the last year or two, would not be at all surprised if he turned it all in in the near future. Being robbed at gunpoint is a most nervracking experience I can assure you when it happened to me over 30 years ago it left me quite traumatised for a while.

Gangsters held me at gunpoint and bayonet point in a wholesale jewellers office in Hatton Garden London and got away with an unknowm amount of Diamonds, Gold and ready cash could have been a million, I lost around 10k, not insured, right sickener at the time I can tell you.
Howard was asked on regional BBC last night " Six Figures ?" " Well into six figures" was the reply so looks like they got more than 100k
Times hard for most here in Durham and Howard not the most popular bloke in a rough area. No surprise to see him turned over keeping this amount of cash handy.

In an interview he said money was from days when he gambled, £150,000. He was convinced he would have been killed if he had, had no money there. Sounded really traumitised, will take some getting over.
I have been robbed at gunpoint several times and I know what a traumatic experience it is ......... even if the perpertrators are relatives ! :0

Think of any other sport, a professional footballer maybe or an Olympic athlete. There would only be sympathy generally.

I think the majority are just wondering why that amount of money would be kept at home ?
And the fact that it's probably likely the offenders knew it was there.

i hope he had declared to the insurance company that he was been holding that kind of money in the safe . if he has ,he will be ok .

Dev ,you are very bitter . Hope your not losing much . But when you have a shotgun put into your face , you will need 4 years of therapy just to get over the incident . This incident will break the hardest of men for a very long time .
A mate always tells me this story . He was in a bookies 10 years ago when 3 guys with Samurai swords came charing in , had all the customers on the floor . One jumped over the desk like a rabbit and held the sword at the Managers throat . The whole incident lasted about 3 minutes , but that poor manger could not work again for 5 years . My mate to this day is still looking over his shoulder when he goes to a bookie.
i only had one dealing with HJ, he seemed a genuine fella. I ended up buying a horse off him which "doesnt have a problem, just badly handicapped". Turns out, the horse had broke its leg, which he forgot to mention to me, Graham Lee filled us in sometime later. Cost me a fortune. Whats that saying? What goes.......

Desdert Pilot . When an owner leaves a horse with him for 6-12 months to train, who has to pay the insurance premium for that horse while it is in training . Say the horse has a training accident and breaks a leg ,who picks up the insurance bill .
tutan - its very expensive to insure national hunt horses - i have 2 - ones not worth the meat - the other one has cost about £40k to get to the stage where its run 2 bumpers - but the insurance is about 10% of its purchase value per year
And of course as with everything involved with a horse -the owner pays
so mines 5 yo so if it runs till its 12 i will have to stump up 10% of its insurance value x8 so 80% of ita value over its racing life
diddles if wins a few races and the value jumps to 750,000 . That is one insurace premium now ,scary .
i did giggle when i read they wore balaclavas but howard described one of then as clean shaven!!!!

Your talking about 6 good results out of hundreds. Take Quewetwo. Should never have run at aintree. Horse will be disappointed and hard to train before its come to itself. Poor imo

they do say inside scams are and false robbery is increasing - They also say that that when giving accounts of robbery they let themselves down by giving far too much information. According to Howard They wore balaclavas - one was clean shaven - so one wasnt and they were also said to be in their early to mid 20s. I cant get over the fact that £100k was in the safe. Plus all the other things that have happened fires- assault - gates stolen. Who the hell pinches someones gate ffs.I'm not suggesting the robbery didnt take place - but its all a bit odd.

3) As for the 100k - obvious if you have that sort of money about you will be targetted by someone somewhere who finds out - he used the words saving for years - that is an awful lot of people who pass through that yard
