Hern and Mercer ? one of my favourite teams
By:
Owned by Lady Beaverbrook - Maple Green and Brown colours.

Joe wouldn't ride him first time out, Brian Proctor rode him. Bit of a maniac until he was gelded and for a while after. Top class sprinter. Lady Beaverbrook's.
Wore leather sheets to stop him biting himself. |
By:
he would win this years race even at the age of 40 which is what he would be
By:
Quite a few former Abernant winners would be the current crop of 'much of a muchness' so-called 'group class' sprinters.

* beat

By:
carried 10st plus and won even with Carson on board
By:
Great horse - heart of a lion.
By:
He must have been one of the first winners for the Hern/Carson combination.

Bloody hell Boldboy I remember Tromos - now that's a story
By:
Didn´t Tromos´Greek owners have a few good ones with Bruce Hobbs around that time? And then nothing.
By:
Lady Beaverbrook used to like naming most of her horses using seven letters. Can't remember one called Aroused though.

Didn´t Tromos´Greek owners have a few good ones with Bruce Hobbs around that time? And then nothing. They also owned STILVI who was ridden by Geoff Baxter. |
By:
Tromos was favourite to win the boat race in the spring of 79
By:
George Cambanis (Black with white spots) had many horses with Bruce Hobbs.
Stilvi was a real good sprinter for him and was the dam of Tromos, Tachypous and Tolmi. (I think) His best horse after that clutch was probably Amyndas. |

Tromos......was a huge 2-y-o if I remember rightly...a man among boys at the time
By:
did he used to joust with vaigly great and double bloom or was that a few years prior?
By:
Tyrnavos was another. Irish Derby winner I think.
By:
Alex Bird was disappointed after he decided Tromos could not be be 2,000G
By:
No relation.
By:
Cumanis sprinter Ialysos harks back to Stilvi.
Think owned by G.Cambanis daughter |
By:
Didn't Boldboy win back to back Victoria Cups?
By:
Do I remember Tromos! Wish it had the heart and guts of Boldboy.
By:
Stilvi was the dam of Tachypous (r/up in 2000 gns),
Taxiarchos (top class miler), Tromos (dewhurst and champion 2-y-o), Tyrnavos (Irish Derby winner), Tolmi (Coronation winner and r/up in 1000 gns). I think they were her 1st 5 foals, but I'm sure that she had at least one more top class foal. Any contributors. |
By:
I doubled Tromos with One In a Million for the Guineas Antepost. Tromos well beaten in the Craven, never heard of again, the other won.
By:
as I referred to earlier ...
Today's Abernant Official ratings - 106 - 105 - 105 - 104 - 103 - 102 - 99 and even a 45 ! A good STONE, or probably more, below the quality of the race when BOLDBOY, et al, were taking part. |
By:
Come to think of it - Today's renewal must have been the worst Abernant Stakes ever, and by some distance, too.
