Did Greville Starkey (wonderful memories, RIP) ride this one? Or was it yet another great old name, Eddie Hide? Anyone help me out please?

Julio Mariner (st leger) and Roland Gardens (2000) both won at 28/1.

It was 28/1.

Other 28/1 winners of the St Leger were PELEID - trained by Bill Elsery, for whom Eddie Hide used to be stable jockey - but Peleid was ridden by Frankie Durr.

and earlier that than - PROVOKE - trained by Major Hern, and ridden by Joe Mercer.

I was there that day in 1978.

Greenhill God won the opening 7f handicap, Devon Ditty won the Flying Childers, Town & Country won the 1m 2f handicap under 10st, Julio Mariner won the Classic delayed by the death of Easter King, Formulate won the May Hill and Indian won the last, with debutant Tromos only third.

My late father had named Julio Mariner as a Leger winner ever since hisa fast-finishing second to Dacylographer in the then William Hill Futurity but on the day he had just a place bet on it which returned just over 2/1.

That was him all over.

Yes - there's another 28/1 winner.... must be some kind of record price for any of the Classics

Hern/Mercer, again - beat Glint Of Gold - with 4/9 fav Shergar only 4th.

Hawthornden won the Leger at 28/1 too.

Mighty mac, think you're a few years out with Roland Gardens, would have been late 70s 78/79, remember it well ridden by Frankie Durr. At the time i had an LBO in Lozells b'ham on the corner of Lozells rd and Roland Rd which led to Roland Gardens, as you can guess every body had a few bob ew on it!
On about 28/1 winners weren't there a couple of h'cappers that won the B@H Juddmonte race in 70s, Relkino i think was one.
