Chris Squire was betting a 1/6 odds a place in a 16 runner handicap at Newton Abbot last summer. Taking advantage of the holiday crowd like that is the** of the highest order.

Are you sure you want to go down this route lads? Nigel, we all know good books and bad books. I don't believe that a man should be pilloried and held up as some kind of crook because he bet a fifth of the odds on the National.
Especially by those who choose to remain nameless on a public forum.
We all have our own ideas as to what constitutes fairness. There was one bloke at Cheltenham who bet 1/6 th of the odds on 16 runner h'cps and payed only 3 places. I would suggest you concentrated your firepower on this sort of thing. If you disagreee with Bill and Paul Colley's way of trading then I think a quiet word would be far more appropriate than attempted rabble rousing on here.
Nick

Agree with Paddy. If you start calling people crooks for operating within the rules of their licence and the law of the land, you are going to be up for slander.
While I may not agree with what some of them do & wouldnt do it myself, this is going too far.

In any line of work if you are a blatant rip off merchant then you expect to get exposed..... agree it all determines what is a test of fairness....... and again we all know that people are free to do as they wish.............. there is a clear line between fair and unfair though where certain individuals are concerned

Paddy..... what you fail to realise is that when the Racing Post expose these rip off merchants in an article one day (believe me it will happen) all on course bookmakers names will be mud and all tarred with the same brush
Do you want that? Of course you dont far better to try and shame them on a forum like this in the hope they clean up their act

for betting 1/5th odds in the National IS going too far. Whether you agree with the practice (as endorsed FULLY by the Gambling Commission) or not, you cannot call someone a "disgrace" on a public forum over it.

Is there a "union" or "association" for Bookmakers? If bad eggs were operating within my industry or field of work and tarnishing it's reputation then I'd want the powers that be to lean on them and get them to clean up their act.

The Bookmakers' Associations have asked the Gambling Commission to reconsider its decision to allow a free for all on EW terms but they will not. It would apparently be a restraint of trade & likely frowned upon by the OFT. I believe something voluntary, rather than imposed is being worked on though.

If the bookmakers feel strongly enough about the 1/6th the odds merchants they can set up a voluntary code of conduct. If you sign up to certain minimum standards you can display a "Gold Standard" on your joint or similar. Very obvious to the public who the decent bookmakers are then.

Do you not agree slanderous comment surely is when you are telling an untruth. I WAS NOT AT AINTREE BUT I AM ONLY RELAYING WHAT HAS BEEN RELAYED TO THE FORUM. I WOULD BE AMAZED IF I WAS DEEMED AS TREATING THESE PEOPLE UNFAIRLY, IF THEY DID NOT BEHAVE IN THE ADVERTISED MANNER I WOULD CERTAINLY APOLOGIZE, IF THEY DID THEY DESERVE ALL THE FLACK THEY ARE GETTING.

Although, as an on-course punter, I obviously preferthe best terms I can get, I honestly think more good would be done if you " named and shamed" all the unlicensed layers on btfr who regularly lay known non-triers ( known to them, that is).
Despite all the talk about "transparency", I haven't seen any official list of names of those guilty of what is the real turn-off that's responsible for the loss of public interest in the game.
Balance things up a bit, imo.

Campion - you cannot call someone a disgrace for acting within the law of the land and the terms of his betting licence. You clearly dont agree with the practice but to call someone a disgrace over it is slandering his good name.

the grand national is the biggest betting race of the nh season, aintree racecourse should implement a condition in their policy that every on course bookie should bet 1/4 odds first four i.e no 1/4 first four no badge!

Never mentioned any offence, just feel that public are hard enough to get to the races asit is, we all know we get them at the festivals ,what about the other 300 days.

Cant blame all the bookies after all they do have it tough when they are explaining to an inibreated woman for ten minutes thet there is no odds for her preference of wager of the horse of the policewoman on duty.

Anaglogs - I don't expect sympathy but it really is a difficult meeting. I had a headache literally for two days afterwards. The sheer volume of noise from 35,000 scouse women talking **e at full volume while you are trying to work has to be experienced to believe. Only today am I feeling "normal" again.

The Tatts rules are being rewritten and will include a clause that oncourse bookmakers can vary the standard each way terms as long as they are clearly displayed. The existing ew terms will remain the standard terms.

I understand that campion but it is all about how you go about it. Having repeated goes at someone with influence at the Gambling Commission is the only way anything will change.

Its ok for the burger vans to go from £2 for *****at a horrible frozen wet day at a point to point to £6 at a lovely warm Aintree but dare a bookmaker decide only to pay a 1/5th on the grand National after spending the winter freezing his gonads off for the staff to go home with more money then him. . .Good job Pierpoint isnt still around or he'd have a queue at the aintree gallows.

Evening Cu. Grandad worked on the railway before starting at the dogs bookmaking. He said that was proper hard work, we don't know we're born these days.

MaxEd - a large proportion of on track punters on the big days dont understand it or care, that's how. I can have 14/1 & proper 1/5th odds up, bloke next door can be 12/1 & 1/6th but he'll still take bets - even from some who try to compare then choose him!!!!!

I haven't spoken to him but at the age of 18 he was working 1 mile down dark dank pits, 10 hours a day. if you could have said would you have swapped it for 4 house at Aintree in a crappy pitch, with thousands of birds yelling and laughing, I will l bet a little 5/6 that that he would plum for the Grand National.

if people are worried about the implications of naming the bookmakers offering less than standard terms. why not go the other way and recommend by their trade names the one,s in your opinion that offer standard terms in all but the most exepional circumstances ,take a decent bet and conduct themselves in a professional manner.

so its ok so long as it is displayed well i had a walk down to the 3rd ring at pontefract yesterday and a firm called easton were betting a 1/7th yet covered up the board where it displays the place terms with a gamecare sign so you only got to find out if you looked at your ticket
what do you bookmakers think about that and what will be done
answer nothing

I noticed threee books on the rails at Aintree offering 1/5 odds on 16-21 runner handicaps, Johnson, Cook,Hughes. The remainder were all offering the standard 1/4 and seemingly running their business, despite a non level playing field. However, what they are doing, is respecting the wishes of their customers. Any businessman who ignores their constant complaints has no eye on the future of his affairs. The voluntary code will come - and leading firms such as mine will sign up immediately, because I've always offered the standard, and strange terms such as a sixth disgust me, and to those who think 1/5 will suffice, I respectfully suggest to you - my friends, to remove those heads from the sand. When the flags arrive, you will be isolated and competing with the leaders will be untenable. Abandon exchange following - it's not pleasing your customer base, it's a cynical attempt to convey every penny out there onto betfair-daq
