Are you sure you want to go down this route lads? Nigel, we all know good books and bad books. I don't believe that a man should be pilloried and held up as some kind of crook because he bet a fifth of the odds on the National.

Especially by those who choose to remain nameless on a public forum.

We all have our own ideas as to what constitutes fairness. There was one bloke at Cheltenham who bet 1/6 th of the odds on 16 runner h'cps and payed only 3 places. I would suggest you concentrated your firepower on this sort of thing. If you disagreee with Bill and Paul Colley's way of trading then I think a quiet word would be far more appropriate than attempted rabble rousing on here.

Agree with Paddy. If you start calling people crooks for operating within the rules of their licence and the law of the land, you are going to be up for slander.

While I may not agree with what some of them do & wouldnt do it myself, this is going too far.

Report Racecourse Regular April 13, 2010 8:59 PM BST
In any line of work if you are a blatant rip off merchant then you expect to get exposed..... agree it all determines what is a test of fairness....... and again we all know that people are free to do as they wish.............. there is a clear line between fair and unfair though where certain individuals are concerned

Do you want that? Of course you dont far better to try and shame them on a forum like this in the hope they clean up their act

for betting 1/5th odds in the National IS going too far. Whether you agree with the practice (as endorsed FULLY by the Gambling Commission) or not, you cannot call someone a "disgrace" on a public forum over it.

The Bookmakers' Associations have asked the Gambling Commission to reconsider its decision to allow a free for all on EW terms but they will not. It would apparently be a restraint of trade & likely frowned upon by the OFT. I believe something voluntary, rather than imposed is being worked on though.

If the bookmakers feel strongly enough about the 1/6th the odds merchants they can set up a voluntary code of conduct. If you sign up to certain minimum standards you can display a "Gold Standard" on your joint or similar. Very obvious to the public who the decent bookmakers are then.

Although, as an on-course punter, I obviously preferthe best terms I can get, I honestly think more good would be done if
you " named and shamed" all the unlicensed layers on btfr who regularly lay known non-triers ( known to them, that is).

Despite all the talk about "transparency", I haven't seen any official list of names of those guilty of what is the real turn-off that's responsible for the loss of public interest in the game.

Balance things up a bit, imo.

I noticed threee books on the rails at Aintree offering 1/5 odds on 16-21 runner handicaps, Johnson, Cook,Hughes. The remainder were all offering the standard 1/4 and seemingly running their business, despite a non level playing field. However, what they are doing, is respecting the wishes of their customers. Any businessman who ignores their constant complaints has no eye on the future of his affairs. The voluntary code will come - and leading firms such as mine will sign up immediately, because I've always offered the standard, and strange terms such as a sixth disgust me, and to those who think 1/5 will suffice, I respectfully suggest to you - my friends, to remove those heads from the sand. When the flags arrive, you will be isolated and competing with the leaders will be untenable. Abandon exchange following - it's not pleasing your customer base, it's a cynical attempt to convey every penny out there onto betfair-daq
