errr? local communities can have a ref. to decide on the level of council tax they pay.

They can? right... so I can decide I want to pay zero ctax and then when there is no money for (example) meals on wheels and a relative of mine starves to death....

I can sue the council :D

When did we agree to be ruled by Europe?. I thought we went into Europe for trading purposes not to be dictated to, i thought that was why we won the second World war.
Report yeahyeahwhatever • April 13, 2010 6:36 PM BST
exactly - and for a supposedly democratic country the handling of the vote over the Lisbon Treaty had more in keeping with a dictatorship!
Report Aether • April 13, 2010 6:36 PM BST
I think that if the UK does ever withdraw from Europe the cons will outweigh the pros.

I mean the UK as an industry is severly battered. We no longer produce anything (not on the level that the country once did). The EU enables the UK to trade freely, we go out we lose that.

Although I do like the idea of bringing the Great back in 'Great Britain' I just think the UK in its current state needs Europe.
Report yeahyeahwhatever • April 13, 2010 6:44 PM BST
Yes our manufacturing base has suffered severe erosion in recent years - but why would we only want to trade with the EU? Don't China and America make everything we need anyway...
We don't gain from being in the EU these days - and the on-going open-door policy and the cost of rescuing Greece will make a bad situation even worse.

If the EU was ever going to work (and I'm not sure it ever was...) it was because a group of reasonably wealthy countries banded together - those days are long gone.

Why would you think for one moment that anyone in Europe would rush to our aid?

2) our products will be so uncompetitive so uk plc will go bust

And what's to stop us selling to other markets? Do you think the prices we pay now are so wonderfully cheap? Not when you take into the account the other costs of belonging to Europe. Familiar with Betfair's better odds :-) and the premium charge at all :-(
If we're getting such a great deal on prices - how come we buy so much from China?

3) the £1 pound against the euro and the dollar will go into freefall, forget about spanish holidays

Why will that happen? Look at the likely cost of bailing out Greece - what do you think that's going to go to any member state's currency? That's just scaremongering and you know it. As for Spanish holidays.... ffs.... we're fast losing control of our borders, our health and education system can't cope with level of immigration and you're worried about your right to have two weeks eating sausage and egg in blistering sunshine.

With Greece though, the current and previous Government have and are corrupt.

With the help of Banking companies such as Goldman Sachs they managed to 'lie' with thier books, no wonder they find themselves in the state that they do.

If they pull out of the Euro they can make thier own currency (no more Euro), they can print as much money as they want, and if they do, do this they can then pay off all the 300 odd billion they owe.

I mean look at a country such as America, it too is in a defecit however, why do they keep going? They print their own money, pay thier loans.

Tax is not the issue in Greece though. Why should the Greek people pay for the way in which their Government has acted? They got help from Goldman Sachs to cover up billions of debts, and now people are saying that the Greek people should pay more taxes to get them out of the situation they find themselves in, its rubbish!

Do any banks pay taxes? Lets look at Goldman Sachs again, last year they paid LESS THAN 1% tax, thats alot when you consider the ridiculous amount of bonuses croocked bankers get.

If Greece are to get help the deal will be drawn up by the IMF (World Banks basically). Greece are going to get help from the very people that helped them mess up thier country, which is plain stupid to be fair. The world banks will hold countries like Greece, Ireland, Spain ect... at thier mercy.

The banks did not think tax was in BIG problem when they helped Greece cover their billions of debts up.

They had a similar problem in 2000, again banks involved, if it were so big a problem as you make it out, why then did these so called 'Bankers' inform the Greeks that they needed to sort their problems out.

They let them be, they hid the debts and pretended like nothing was the matter, until one day the situation got so severe that they now find themselves on the verge of bankruptcy.

Yeah at the end of the day it is the people who lose.

Bankers and bank managers never lose, they unleash themselves on the world they make it into one great big mess and then they can just take a holiday at an exotic island.

I have never trusted banks and I am completely against the ridiculous amount of bonuses that some receive. Although, I do agree with a person being rewarded for hard work they should also pay some means of tax.

I guess what has happened in Ireland is slightly similar to Greece, however, with Greece people don't pay taxes nor as far as one knows have Ireland hid debts.

I just wonder what will happen to the other nations.

If the company the bank invest into go up , they get huge bonus and a huge kiss from a kissogram . Now when the share prices of those companies they invest into go down , they just open the till and put more cash into them . Now that company eventually goes bust ,why is the banker who was paid that huge bonus , return that money for his failure . It is the people money and it does not matter . This year the head of Barclays take home pay will be around 60 million dollars and people on the ground floor been sacked , how fair is this . It makes my blood boil . UK interest rates are 0.5% and the Banks Credit Card companies charge 24%-45% ,who is the thief now .
