But the point is that most of the punters who bet on the GN don`t realise you can take a price. And as it happens even Wilsher ( the fat bloke ) was embarassed enough to make a comment.
The GN is a once a year opportunity to attract new blood to racing. The more intelligent will have noted they were ripped-off. |
By:
Too Right Salmon, ripping off punters doesnt seem to be a problem for "Racing For Change"
What with Admission prices, Food and betting like this i cant see many wanting to go racing on a regular basis, which is what the sport needs, yes , you can pack the festivals, but you wont get many "Long termers" this way |
By:
salmon totally agree.
By:
Yes he does have a point i agree fairfield but come on, we all know why this happened pre race.
Yes bookies do give good value, but you take that value your branded no good ref this 365 nonsense with backing a 4s plus winner ect? Then your restricted to peanuts. Anyway im off out, going to spend my dirty ew double winnings najaf and brusclini on some beer. Once a rat always a rat hey corb ;) |
By:
racing for change is just a skim and a the lovechild of some twit with a double barreled name and / or tweed jacket.
to make proposals work in any walk of life you need a strong body to make things happen - limp wristed airheads not concious of what the public actually want arent gonna change anything. |
By:
exactly it was ripping off people who didn,t know better, any big 3 bookmakers "narks" shouldn,t be so stupid as to try and justify it.
By:
Once a year punters won't have a clue they were being ripped off nor even understand the concept.
By:
najaf and brusclini on some beer.
you should donate that to charity, how you drew on that i ll never know. |

Not that I heard this year, saddo. I heard a few people coming to pick up their winnings this year, and were querying why they got paid at 10/1 for DPI when they'd obviously backed earlier today.
Shops' default is SP unless you want otherwise, people who go racing are used to oncourse books default being the display price at the time of bet. This is clear to us regulars, but not to novices. |
By:
I agree Crawford. I first started taking an interest in racing through the GN at the age of 10. If I`d seen the prices displayed as they are now and that scam was taking place in 1961 I would certainly have spotted that something fishy was going on even if I wasn`t quite sure what.

Wanted to lay the 10s near the off so fired up the phone . Thank God it was 18.5 on here, didn't do it
Can understand them reducing the favs a bit (McCoy's Walsh's etc) but trimming all the rags from 150 to 100 is pathetic and short sighted when it's the shop window for the game. |

3 years ago the Betfair SP malfunctioned but Betfair paid out on the winner at a fair price, which must have cost them a few quid. Today it seems like the SP from the betting ring malfunctioned. I wonder if any bookies will have the decency to pay out at 12s or even 14s about the winner?
I wonder what the SP regulatory committee will have to say about it all. Not a lot I suppose. |
By:
surely the most brazen scalping of punters for years is betfairs premium charge mr pythia?
By:
It was pretty poor, tbh.
I can't ever remember a race where so many of the field shortened and so few drifted. |
By:
I think the OP is correct that 150% is disgraceful, but betfair's charges are equally disgraceful and their place market is terrible value- 1/6th the odds on the course would often beat it.
By:
to be fair the betfair place odds are a true reflection of what is likely to happen. You've just got to work out when it's in your interest to go EW on the High Street
By:
happens in every race in ireland lol
By:
Corbiewood - you are a complete imbecile :^0
Poster you are correct - it is disgraceful |
By:
pcporter
pythia doesnt comment on the premium charge apart from when disclosing customer account details |
By:
corbiewood you are a clown and its pretty obvious why you seem to be one of the most disliked people on the forum.Someone disagrees with you so you hit them with the Arber "insult".Is that really the best you can come up with.As for me stabbing you if i saw you in the street, well theres more chance of that happening than of me being an Arber, put it that way.
By:
pcporter, as most of you on here already know, the premium charge is paid by 0.5% of Betfair's active customer base, it is an even smaller fraction of our entire customer base.
We believe it is a fair price to charge for those customers who benefit most from Betfair's massive marketing spend and investment in the product and the platform. If customers paying the Premium Charge do not think they are getting value for money and a premium service then, presumably, they go elsehwhere and good luck to them. To date, we have not seen much evidence to suggest that is what they are doing. Interesting to note the displacement activity from the usual suspects who want to raise thier old favourite gripe of complaining about the PC rather than address the issue of the thread's subject matter. No surprises there. |

inside :^0
deep breaths |
By:
I agree that the bookie SPs were shocking, but it annoys me when someone who works for Betfair comes on here**gin them off when Betfair take no risks at all. YOU are NOT bookmakers Betfair so don;t pretend you are. It is your customers who create the book. You cream off a profit from winners and losers in every race without even having to think about it.
National Disgrace!! |
By:
What makes the percentage more hard to swallow is the fact that he GN is prob the only race where they can lay the entire field...unlike most races where the on course boys are unllikely to lay much outside of the top few in the betting...which then makes the entire overround a pointless bit of accounting......

By:
well done pythia
keep up the great work you really are superb and betfair is never wrong |
By:
info, calm down ffs. you stalk me on this forum like a rancid, seething ball of rage.
this overround didnt effect you and you ve not got it in you to do anything abouth these so called bookmaker infractions - instead you bleat on a forum of a company that piosons people with betfair arcade and saturate people with a premium charge. |
By:
when you consider one bet a year to be "active" in order to**your stats, why would anybody believe anything you say about the premium charge?
By:
coffee, Betfair is a licenced bookmaker and does take risk on its multiples products, using the Betfair SP to detrmine how those bets are settled.
I have made no claims that it is Betfair that determines what the Betfair SPs are and agree it is our customers who set those prices - that, is my point. It is a better system for backers because the layers on here are consistently prepared to return better odds than the conventional bookmakers. |
By:

isnt that the basis of a free market , betfair is a road but not the full journey . |
By:
you mean the bots are prepared to return better % sps, surely?
By:
THE ONLY NATIONAL DISGRACE IS THE PREMIUM CHARGE,,OUTRAGEOUS
By:
The Premium Charge targets a tiny portion of tbe userbase and the portion of the userbase least likely to stop betting here because of it (the reason? they win bundles here).
The people it affects often can't get on with the bookies at any price, never mind at hefty over-round percentages like today's GN. The SP punter was absolutely soaked today by the bookies - it's virtually a consumer scandal. The sooner the once-a-year punter works out how to use a betting exchange the better. Re the place market - a book percentage around 400% for four places is as fair as it gets. Try getting on palce only with the bookies if you think they offer better value than the traded market here. |
By:

not true , factually incorrect statement . on course better value is had on many many occasions . |
By:
pythia if there was somewhere else to go most of the punters who pay the pc would go,also i find it hard to believe that the percentage quoted is true,do u expect us to believe that 99.5% dont pay or have never paid the premium charge.
