Wound invariably gets infected because of poor blood supply. Can't give antibiotics because would need to give such a large dose it would kill the horse anyway.

Some have been saved - for future stallion duties ...... and revenues.

Derby/Arc winner Mill Reef being the most well-known.

plastic scouser, its exactly the same in dog racing, if you broke your leg you would be told to rest it for 4-6 weeks, where as with animals you cant keep them still and can end up paying alot of money on vets bills when the injury may never heal.

They don't always depends on which leg and where was the break. Sometimes the need to take the weight off the broken limb causes more problems.

Horses leg bones aren't like humans - when they break they snap like an elastic band
Report Butchos123 April 9, 2010 3:36 PM BST
Yup, some can be salvaged as stallions/brood mares. Problem is they are a bugger to keep still long enough to heal the bone, and even then they may well not race again.
I'm serious with the insurance by the way. It sounds harsh but most are insured for death/fatal injuries so you will get your money if they get shot, or risk having a non racing gelding sat in a stable for the rest of its life.

not the same as dog racing razl. Majority wouldnt put a dog down if it breaks leg racing other than a minority of heartless tw@ts.

One of mine broke its pelvis and the vet managed to save it though God only knows how. The man's a genius. Anyway, he's right as rain these days but obviously can't be ridden. With a broken leg, it's not just keeping the beggars still that's the problem but even getting them back up on to the three other legs can be damn near impossible. Much depends on the break though, and where it is located. Sometimes it's a lot kinder to put them out their misery than try to save them.

unfortunately darkie alot do. alot of dog owners cant afford to pay the vets bills that are charged these days, somebody i know had a dog break its shoulder the vet wanted 4,500 thousand pound to**it, they paid there money and the dog s okay now, but alot cant afford that sort of money.

Broken pelvises are quite common in racehorses and they often recover to race again. Someone said people who have their greyhounds put down after broken legs are heartless. I had a greyhound who had such a bad break that the bone was sticking out through the skin and he wasscreaming in agony. I don't think it was heartless to take the decision we took.
