Noticed in the list of non-runners published yesterday by BHA, that Michael Wigham trained "Wetherby Place" was scratched from yesterday's race at Wolverhampton 9:20 and its entry for Lingfield tomorrow with the reasons given as "suspended from racing". Wolverhampton bulletin later amended to Temperature (self cert.).
Anyone know more?

Dont know the specifics but from what you say he "self-certed" the horse as a n/r which makes the horse ineligible to race in the next 5 days...(ie suspended from racing)

Thanks Thea, just looked up the rules.
They are:

Self-Certification for Non-Runners to be Introduced from the Start of the 2008 Flat Season

With effect from the start of the 2008 Flat Season, on Saturday 22nd March 2008, trainers will be allowed to self-certify a horse as a non-runner if they believe that the horse is unfit to run in the race for which it has been declared.

This development, approved by the British Horseracing Authority Board earlier this year and agreed in consultation with the National Trainers Federation, will be accompanied by safeguards against the risk of abuse. Any such self-certified non-runner will not be permitted to run in any other race for six days afterwards. For example, a horse that is a non-runner in a race taking place on Monday 7th April will not be permitted to run until Monday 15th April (the entries for which close and are published on Tuesday 8th).

At present a veterinary certificate can be issued which reflects that there were no abnormal clinical findings but that the trainer had reported something to indicate that the horse was unfit to race. Self-certification replaces this.

Trainers will still be able to declare non-runners without penalty or running restriction if:

Thats right - 6 days...

14 days would better prevent abuse.

Typical case was "Babich Bay" (R. Curtis (ie. Paul Blockley)), withdrew horse on 1st. April after early punt from 20/1 to 7/2, reason given on a so called "vets cert." as SORE SHINS, yet runs on Tuesday 6th. April at Ffos Las.

Impossible, sore shins require at least 3 weeks to heal with medication (Bute) and then another 21 days for the drug to clear the horses system before it can run !

Paul Scotney take note. !!!

To be fair Kenny the symptom sore shins can have varying implications..
I agree though in this case it was a poor excuse..

Self Certification is a timid approach by the BHA - open to any amount of manipulation.

Witness all the poorly drawn Sprinters who get self-certified.
