My personal fav moment - last year , driving home from a wonderful holiday paid for by wil hill. I live in 'ynys mon' -- last minute i picked mon mome (mon 'h'ome) . the skill involved mindblowing, i know. The year before I chose a straight tricast came in 1st, 3rd and 2nd. I love the grand nat. :)

I wasn't your standard laddies cashier. I knew the price of every major sporting event that day (only a small number back in the late 80s) and of many of the horses and ante posts we had on our machine. On national day I knew the price of probably 25 horses at a given time. It sped things up rather.
However one January I was working in Lambourn (A memory so distant now I can't even remember if Lambourn has an 'e' on the end) and some guy comes in asking for an ante post on a horse I sadly can't remember the name of now - If I'd known I'd need it on something called a betting forum 20 years later, I'd have paid more attention. I hadn't heard of it and couldn't find it on the screens, so I passed it to my manager who had to temporarily remove his feet from the table and put his coffee down. He had it easy before the racing started when I was on shift ;)
Anyway we decided between us that there was no horse of that name running so we phoned through for a price. We were informed that the horse wasn't running and I relayed the customer the sad news.
The reply I got was
"Of course it's running, it's my horse"

I dont wish to be pedantic but you will have to ask for the Egg back for Paine as the youngest rider in the race.
Payne was born in 25/7/1910 and rode in the 1928 race Hobbs was born in 27/12/1920 and rode the winner in 1938

Which present day trainer rode a 200-1 chance which fell at Bechers and less than a fortnight later broke their neck in a fall, never to ride again?
No takers then!

Absolutely love this meeting and I was one of the sad people that bought a Red Rum bronze statue when they became available all those years ago , the National itself has stories to fill 100 threads such is the history and the Aldaniti story still doesn't seem real even now , the other great unanswered question for me was whether Andy Pandy would have foiled the Red Rum hat trick ?

I was advised many years ago to plant myself as near as possible to the first fence and experience something to remember , I did just that and the sight of 40 horses taking off within a few seconds of each other is still my most exhilarating experience on a racecourse and would advise anyone to sample it just the once.
great thread , love all the racing nostalgia.

What's great about the National is that the majority who place a bet develop reasons for backing like no other race , remember my dear old mum backing Different Class in 1968 because it was owned by her most favourite actor..............anyone remember who ?

Just to conclude the discussion from last night Hayden, I have looked for the ticket but I have boxes and boxes of stuff which are still unpacked from a move 3 or 4 years ago and it's not practical to dig it out.
I thoroughly intend to take a photo of it when it turns up though, I know which tin it's in, I don't know where the tin is.

Bruce Robertson Hobbs (December 27, 1920 November 22, 2005) was an American jockey and horse trainer. Born on Long Island, New York, Hobbs became the youngest jockey ever to ride the winner of the English Grand National when successful on Battleship, a son of Man o' War, in 1938 just three months after his 17th birthday. Two weeks later, Hobbs won the Welsh Grand National on Timber Wolf. At the end of the 1937-38 season, during which he rode 35 winners, Hobbs made history by becoming the first jockey to win three Grand Nationals in one year, being successful in Long Island's Cedarhurst version. A crashing fall in 1938 resulted in injuries including a broken spine. Although told he would never ride again, he returned to the saddle, but turned to training horses at age 25. Hobbs retired from racing in 1985. He died in 2005, aged 84.

Battleship was the first American-bred to win the race; the smallest horse to win it; and the last entire horse to win it. He sired a couple of decent 'chasers' in the US.

Another year, likely in my teens, I'd backed "Over the Road" at some longish each way price, I seem to remember it placed one year, though I couldn't tell you if it was that year.
At around halfway, the commentator was rattling off the list of names while I was still trying to find my horse in the pack, possibly armed with the colours out of the racing post, but more likely out of some tabloid rag. The usual "In the lead is...., just behind comes..... and in third comes... (then about three more names).... and Over....(my happy little face looks up) ......... to Peter O'Sullevan
ffs springs to mind

A very famous Grand National Jockey was so pleased with the gameness of the winner he asked if he could have the horse after the owner finished racing him.

It is a bit to difficult for you as it was in 1843
Tom Olliver rode Vanguard and was given the horse after it retired Olliver rode it a Taxidermist and made him into a settee.

i remember dodger at Ascot in the 70s there was a 3 horse race one was well odds on-- the other 2 were out with the washing 3 mile novice chase. Jack Cohen was doing his norm he bet the fav wins by the distance he bet evens under 15 lenghths evens over 10 lenghths 6-1 he finished alone. And thought he was going to clean the green ones - Dodger flew over like a bat out of hell his glasses wobbling and asks Jack for a 1000 to 160. jack to the bet and scrubbed the board puts up 5-1 dodger asks for 1000 - 200 cohen takes it and went 5-4 under 15 lenghths 5-4 over no offer the fav finishes alone. Of course the 2 rags didnt get past the 5 the fence. Wheb he went to collect 50 bookmakers clapped him back to jack cohens joint

Him and the Asparagus kid had a running battle for over 10 years to out do each other they could stand by the little Rails area at Worcester and be like the best double act on any stage. Thye would have all the other bookmakers and many punters in stitches.

Dodger loved to bet in the west country and the midlsnds - in fact i think the last time i saw him he had just come out of Cheltenham General where he was very sick - i remember him telling me the doctors and nurses patched him up like a 13 year old chaser and put him back into training. I think at the time he was living near Chepstow. Many years ago my father and i were having a busmans holiday and were at Ludlow Dodger Came over and asked what we knew after telling us he was not that interested in anything. The bookmakers chalked up for the novices chase and he stopped in mid stream flew down the front row like a whirlwind and had altogether a 5000-2000. on Fred Rimels novice chaser making his debut in a 3mile chase with |Terry Biddlecome on board the beast started @ 6-4 then went on to win the gold cup 2 years later I wonder if anyone knows what his name was ? anyway after the race I my dad said Dodger I thought u didnt fancy anything - he replied Im not kin telling you am I your a bookmaker ffs

Well Dodger is in good company Grand National winning riders, leading administrator of the Horseracing world, and non other than the bigest loser in racing history. Admiral Rous, had started as the anti post assessor like Smith is now, The Admiral openly admitted that he kept one for himself, that meant he would see a 3 year old with mass,s of scope and improvement and back it to win a small fortune and if he got on he would give it something silly bottom weight. for the Big Autumn Handicap like the Cambridgeshire. If some one stole his thunder as he would call it he would give it a stone more than it deserved. On Simons other side he problem wont get much out of Mad Harry,,Lord Sefton after all he hated the game at the finish, he was in a period when anyone could be a backer or layer, (Like today) He was such a snob that he had a private war with a fellow Gambler, taking every bet he and any other wanted. unfortunately the man had a right ace up his sleeve, a Derby Winner. So Dodger will be able to talk to them all as he knew more than many about the Sport of Kings.
RIP My Friend.

Think the Rimell horse was likely to be Woodland Venture just coming out of the Arkle domination , without looking it up only remember 2 Rimell gold cup winners and not sure if Biddlecombe was still riding when Royal Frolic won the race , 1976 was well remembered for John Burke winning the gold cup and National in the same year , great achievement.
