i remember dodger at Ascot in the 70s there was a 3 horse race one was well odds on-- the other 2 were out with the washing 3 mile novice chase.
Jack Cohen was doing his norm he bet the fav wins by the distance he bet evens under 15 lenghths evens over 10 lenghths 6-1 he finished alone. And thought he was going to clean the green ones - Dodger flew over like a bat out of hell his glasses wobbling and asks Jack for a 1000 to 160. jack to the bet and scrubbed the board puts up 5-1 dodger asks for 1000 - 200 cohen takes it and went 5-4 under 15 lenghths 5-4 over no offer the fav finishes alone. Of course the 2 rags didnt get past the 5 the fence. Wheb he went to collect 50 bookmakers clapped him back to jack cohens joint |

Him and the Asparagus kid had a running battle for over 10 years to out do each other they could stand by the little Rails area at Worcester and be like the best double act on any stage.

Dodger loved to bet in the west country and the midlsnds - in fact i think the last time i saw him he had just come out of Cheltenham General where he was very sick - i remember him telling me the doctors and nurses patched him up like a 13 year old chaser and put him back into training. I think at the time he was living near Chepstow.
Many years ago my father and i were having a busmans holiday and were at Ludlow Dodger Came over and asked what we knew after telling us he was not that interested in anything. The bookmakers chalked up for the novices chase and he stopped in mid stream flew down the front row like a whirlwind and had altogether a 5000-2000. on Fred Rimels novice chaser making his debut in a 3mile chase with |Terry Biddlecome on board the beast started @ 6-4 then went on to win the gold cup 2 years later I wonder if anyone knows what his name was ? anyway after the race I my dad said Dodger I thought u didnt fancy anything - he replied Im not kin telling you am I your a bookmaker ffs |

Well Dodger is in good company Grand National winning riders, leading administrator of the Horseracing world, and non other than the bigest loser in racing history.
Admiral Rous, had started as the anti post assessor like Smith is now, The Admiral openly admitted that he kept one for himself, that meant he would see a 3 year old with mass,s of scope and improvement and back it to win a small fortune and if he got on he would give it something silly bottom weight. for the Big Autumn Handicap like the Cambridgeshire. If some one stole his thunder as he would call it he would give it a stone more than it deserved. On Simons other side he problem wont get much out of Mad Harry,,Lord Sefton after all he hated the game at the finish, he was in a period when anyone could be a backer or layer, (Like today) He was such a snob that he had a private war with a fellow Gambler, taking every bet he and any other wanted. unfortunately the man had a right ace up his sleeve, a Derby Winner. So Dodger will be able to talk to them all as he knew more than many about the Sport of Kings. RIP My Friend. |

Think the Rimell horse was likely to be Woodland Venture just coming out of the Arkle domination , without looking it up only remember 2 Rimell gold cup winners and not sure if Biddlecombe was still riding when Royal Frolic won the race , 1976 was well remembered for John Burke winning the gold cup and National in the same year , great achievement.
