Some cracking selections yesterday, well done to all. It's a beautiful day about 20 miles from the course, I can't see it raining. 5mm why? It looked like perfect ground to me yesterday.

Yet to see one article that remotely justifies the fascination with "Gd/Sft Ground". Ridiculous drainage seems more about courses not losing Hospitality,God forbid it might rain heavily. How much of this is about Horse Welfare? .... The Cynic in me suggests very little. Cheltenham,Aintree,Newbury,Doncaster,Ayr .... All in the last couple months having to water,the list goes on. But who cares? .... Nobody will touch the subject in the racing press,that we can be assured. As I said on the National Forum,the times are slower on average than when it was 4m 4f,from what I have been able to check. We are asking the horses to run faster,for longer,at a higher speed over smaller obstacles. Everything tells us the times should be getting better,the opposite may be nearer the truth. If the course is actually 4m 2f74y,pace and ground are the only reasons for these times. Faced with daily skullduggery,this watering policy just makes it even harder for punters. Going into a race with all the basic facts must be key,surely that is not asking too much. I too hope it dries out,I want to see them finnish their races,not out on their feet. Rant over ... I think there's a theory that slower ground means fewer fatalities. I don't know if evidence
backs that up. Going has been so subjective, historically, it would be hard to tell. |
