One of the most visually impressive winners at this years Royal Ascot was the Aidan O’Brien trained Santiago when winning the Queen’s Vase.

Santiago only ran 3 times as a 2 year old, one of which was a close 2nd to Alpine Star over 7f at Galway (who won today’s Coronation Stakes by 4+ lengths).

For me he’s a solid enough bet at the current available odds of 10/1 (8/1 in some places) for the St Leger.

The Queen’s Vase is normally a stepping stone, particularly for horses trained by O’Brien who win the Queen’s Vase:

2013 - Leading Light (1st in the Queens Vase and 1st in the St Leger)
2016 - Sword Fighter (1st in the Queens Vase and 5th in the St Leger)
2018 - Kew Gardens (1st in the Queens Vase and 1st in the St Leger)

Further confidence can be taken from O’Brien’s comments after Santiago’s victory this week - “He’s a lovely straightforward horse. He travelled well and we always thought he would stay well. He’s an easy horse to train and an easy horse to get fit. We’ve been thinking he was an ideal St Leger horse so we’ll look for another run somewhere between now and then really. I’m not sure he’d run in a Derby as he could be a Cup horse for next year - he’ll get better from three to four. We’ve plenty for both Derbys, the Irish Derby would come too quick anyway but we’ll see what the lads want to do. We think he’ll be a horse for the Cup races next year so that is why we thought this race would suit him.”

Is the Irish Leger not open to 3yr olds and above unlike the English Leger confined only to 3 yr olds? I think Santiago is Doncaster bound.
Report impossible123 July 6, 2020 6:39 PM BST
Serpentine was gifted the Epsom Derby, and I do not think he'd be a match for Santiago - he's also not proven over 14f; Love is very, very, very unlikely for commercial reasons, and her main objective could be The ARC eg Magical (ran as a 3 yr old).

English King does not seem a likely runner, and the running of Mogul at Epsom does not indicate he's a Leger horse either.
Report driver2 July 8, 2020 6:46 AM BST
I wouldn't be surprised if AOB chooses the Leger for i of his colts yet to win a group 1. Likely candidates, imo, would be Tiger Moth, who looked every inch a stayer behind Santiago in the Irish Derby and Dawn Patrol likewise, who would surely have finished closer with a clear run. Either of them would be warm favourites to win the race without Santiago or Serpentine in the line up. I agree that Love has bigger fish to fry and will not run in the Leger so close to the Arc.
Report impossible123 July 8, 2020 10:01 AM BST
I like Santiago as he can quicken at the business end eg he demolished Berkshire Rocco over 1m 6f after quickening away about 2f out. Similarly, in the Irish Derby over 12f. I believe he pulled-out a little bit more holding Tiger Moth when the latter got closer to him despite 12f. But, he's a stronger stayer over 1m 6f as demonstrated in the Queens Vase.

I just hope he does not do an Idaho in the race.
Report driver2 July 8, 2020 11:53 AM BST
Don't you think that from Coolmore's financial point of view, the more group 1/ classic winners the better. I agree that the Leger would be not much more than a formality for Santiago and for those of you who've taken the price I hope he runs for you, but I just don't see how adding a Leger to his resumé is going to enhance his value. Good Luck anyway, I wont have a bet until I know who's running, unless someone lays me evens AOB's selected. Now wouldn't that be a bet!

2.25 Newm today, another Leger Trial, another AOB possible in Dawn Rising who has a very similar pre Derby profile to Serpentine.

I've had a couple of small plays on English King, he looked a Leger horse to me on his Derby run. Granted some nice ground come Leger time (Gd or faster) he's a major player for me. Was surprised to see him at 18.0 & 17.0 on here last week, also had a bit ew at 12/1 with SB (best price with the books)  He runs in the Gordon Stks this week ( a Leger trial) so hopefully a nice win their & then onto Dony.

Zilch for Tiger Moth? He is best priced at 12/1, with the majority of layers at 8/1 or 15/2, most bookmakers have him shorter than Dawn Patrol! Do your homework before you spout this dribble impossible, you really are a tiresome individual sometimes. Tiger Moth runs in a Group 3 at Leopardstown on Thursday and I doubt whether "the lads" will decide where he goes afterwards before then.

I hope the Japanese do not come in with a big bid for Pyledriver like they did for Broome, and make the Arc the target. Pyledriver seems to be the only one with proven form to trouble Santiago; Mogul is likely Grand Prix De Paris bound similarly English King esp if Pyledriver is coming this way.

I've not given Hokum serious consideration (yet) as he needs to improve to challenge Santiago and Pyledriver, I believe. My two for this are Santiago and Pyledriver (after today).
Report impossible123 August 23, 2020 6:37 PM BST
Pyledriver is heading this way, according to his trainer today. The reason being it's a Classic, and its confined to 3yr olds. As such, I make Pyledriver a serious and formidable opposition to Santiago; ability proven with only a slight doubt about his stamina, but he did not look like stopping when winning convincingly in the Voltigeur giving 3lbs to the others.

I think today's decision by connections of Pyledriver could have meant English King is more likely Grand Prix De Paris bound. Santiago is 5/2 with Pyledriver at 5/1 (still value, I believe). English King has taken a walk.

Only 3 weeks to the final Classic of season. Then the Arc follow by Champions Day at Ascot.
Report sageform August 25, 2020 10:51 AM BST
I certainly think that Santiago is too short at the moment. Which countries will be back in lockdown by Sept 12? If France is then could Love run in the Leger? If Ireland is might the O'Brien horses all miss the race? Pyledriver is a value bet if you know that Santiago is your main danger but what about Serpentine, Tiger Moth and Delphi? Coolmore might well fancy turning another of their 3yos into a Classic winner.

Love will not run here as Coolmore will never run their top filly against their Epsom/Irish Derby winner; Arc as no principal colt contender

English King is unlikely either (I believe) given the outstanding performance of Pyledriver in the Voltigeur.

Serpentine - Grand Prix de Paris (13th Sept) bound; French jockey if necessary (if Covid intervenes); 1m 6f possibly too far too.
Tiger Moth - possibly; more likely Irish St Leger if market is anything to go by; trip unknown.
Mogul - annihilated by Pyledriver; trip likely to be too far; no hope of reversing form with Pyledriver, assuming both stay just as well.
Delphi - needs to improve loads; just held on last time; rated only 109.

Pyledriver or Santiago. The former gave weight and a drubbing to Berkshire Rocco (2nd to Santiago). If on song only the trip can beat him. If trained by Gosden or Stoute he'd be 7/4 fav, I firmly believe.
Report sageform August 26, 2020 11:58 AM BST
Agree with all that but I was just thinking the top 2 in the market owe their prices to plans for others and they might change. It is entirely possible that Ireland and France could stop horses going either way.
Report impossible123 August 26, 2020 1:19 PM BST
I do not think your scenario will materialise as it did not stop Coolmore sending their charges for the 1st two Classics; worst case scenario a quarantine which will necessitate the employment of local jockeys.

I think the top two in the market are reflected by what they've achieved so far eg Santiago (Irish Derby/Queen's Vase); Pyledriver (Edward VII Stakes/Voltigeur). The others need to improve to feature prominently in the race.
Report driver2 August 27, 2020 5:57 AM BST
I just watched the Irish Derby again and if they ever meet again, I would back Tiger Moth to beat Santiago. Tiger Moth was very green in the closing stages and unlike the fav, didn't have the rail to help him and he wandered about a little in the middle of the course. I'm sure that he has a lot of improvement in him. Whether or not he runs in the Leger is another matter, I would have liked to have seen him have another run after the Derby. Anyway, his next run will be very interesting imo.

If its soft, I think Passion has a good outside chance. She had an entry in the Irish St Leger ages ago, so I think they knew she wanted a good test.

Clearly in the Oaks they knew she stayed, but went way too fast. In the Irish Oaks, she got done for toe, same at Cork. At Cork she was supported in the betting.

At Naas, first time at 1m6f, again well supported, soft ground, and she stayed really well, won from the front.

Clearly she may not run, might go for the Park Hill also, instead of the Leger. But if it's softish, I think she has a squeak, specially in a well run race.

I backed Mohican Heights (Bet 365: 25/1 ew) for the Leger after its run in the King Edward when it ran on late on for 3rd.  I have what can only be described as an idiot's knowledge of breeding but I'm assuming he should stay.  Atzeni on board at Doncaster would be a plus for me.  Like many others, Derby run can possibly be excused and RP states that he stumbled at the start and maybe, maybe he didn't like the track as well as ATR said he 'struggled (in the) straight', who knows?  Not heard anything about him since though?  Still entered but....anyone know anything please?  Cheers in advance.
Report impossible123 August 27, 2020 6:07 PM BST
Passion could be a thorn to all but will Coolmore run one of their fillies against their Irish Derby winner who's a shortie fav for the race? I doubt that very much; the interest for Tiger Moth seems to have vanished altogether.

Without a doubt Pyledriver has the best form and ought to be fav; Santiago will definitely stay; Hukum (I assume he's running) will need to improve on a line with Subjectivist to bother Pyledriver. Also, his winning time at Ascot is less favourable to Pyledriver on better going  and carrying less weight too.

I think Pyledriver will win if he stays with Santiago the most likely beneficiary if he does not. I hope so.

As a Santiago backer, that can only be a negative. May well be down to prize money, but I’m surprised either way.

Frankie to ride Santiago? I can see Pyledriver going off favourite at this rate.
Report driver2 September 1, 2020 4:06 AM BST
I wouldn't take the fact that RM is heading for Ireland for champions weekend as a negative. AOB has a wealth of talent entered for the Group races at Leopardstown and the Curragh, including next year's 2000gns and Derby fav, Battleground. All of that vs the Leger is a no brainer!
Report impossible123 September 1, 2020 6:25 PM BST

I do not think Gosden has any principal runner unless one cannot dismiss the poor run of Worthily at Epsom. However, Dettori could ride English King (probably Grand Prix de Paris) if he runs given his chummy relationship with its owner. If so, Buick or Doyle would benefit from Moore's preference for Ireland.

Who's backing Hukum? He's very short on what he's done. The long range weather forecast is friendly too.
Report ReaseHeath September 2, 2020 12:46 AM BST
One of Buick or Doyle is going to ride Pinatubo at Longchamp on Sunday so under the current quarantine rules whichever one does won't be available to ride in the Leger - on the other hand Buick might yet end up in Ireland to ride Ghaiyyath in the Champion Stakes and Master Of The Seas in the National Stakes if the quarantine rules for Irish Champions weekend change in terms of elite sport dispensation.

As a point of interest Hukum is rated only 1lb shy of Santiago on the BHA scale and achieved the same RPR in winning the Geoffrey Freer as Santiago did in winning the Irish Derby. I'm not one to take the ratings as gospel but I do think there will be (understandable) question marks about Hukum due to his unconventional route to the race - he would almost certainly have run in the Derby had he not been struck into when winning at Royal Ascot although given the way the Derby panned out it's debatable whether we would have learned much more about him there.

Anyway, I am likely to back him on the day when I think he may well be a bigger price than he is now - I doubt Coolmore think Santiago is a good thing so I think it's likely they'll be mobhanded on the day - I know there are a lot of other good races that weekend but equally they have plenty of 3yo colts with potentially the right profile.

I think the drift of Santiago is mainly Moore induced otherwise I'd expect to see a bit of interest for Tiger Moth; Dawn Patrol is very unlikely to be good enough; Serpentine is also friendless similarly, Passion.

I'm after a bit for Santiago at 6 or more.
Report impossible123 September 2, 2020 8:49 PM BST
All is well with Santiago; Tiger Moth will be running in Ireland next as AOB do not reckon he'd stay 1m 6f; Dawn Patrol is Leger bound; Serpentine Grand Prix de Paris then probably the Arc, all being well.

AOB will not be sending any of his jocks this way for the Doncaster Meeting; the jockeys lined up could be Dettori, Buick, Doyle, Murphy and Kirby.
Report Paterson92 September 2, 2020 9:04 PM BST
While O’Brien and Dettori will be in opposition in the Arc, they are set to team up at the Doncaster St Leger meeting next week, with the Ballydoyle trainer set to call on British-based jockeys there.

Irish Derby hero Santiago is one of the intended O’Brien runners for the Pertemps-sponsored Leger on Town Moor.

O’Brien said: “We have spoken to Frankie, and he’s going to be there for the Leger – which is great for us – so hopefully he will ride some of ours.

“We haven’t really discussed it, but I’d imagine that (using British-based riders) is what will happen because we’ll probably have a lot of runners here (for Longines Irish Champions Weekend) and we’ll need the lads here. The problem is if the lads go there they can’t do anything for the next two weeks after it.

“I’d imagine we’ll probably need them at home for that weekend, and we have Frankie and William (Buick), James (Doyle), Adam (Kirby) and Oisin (Murphy) – they’ve all ridden for us, and we’re delighted they’ve agreed to do that whenever we have needed them. I think we’ll be OK that way.”

Of Santiago, last seen finishing third to Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup, he said: “Everything has gone well since Goodwood. It didn’t really work as we’d have liked – but it didn’t do him any harm, and he seems to be in good form.

“He’ll have a busy week this week, and that will tell us a lot.”
Report ReaseHeath September 2, 2020 11:04 PM BST
His jockey options are going to be reduced, trust me - Murphy is suspended so he definitely ain't gonna be riding and whatever happens with the quarantine rules one of either Buick or Doyle won't be riding at Doncaster, possibly both.

“He has other options like the Irish St Leger and France the week afterwards but we're seriously considering Doncaster.

“He looked very good at Navan. Shane [Crosse] gave him a lovely, patient and confident ride and he won very well. He won in the style of a horse who has earned a crack at a step up in class. The hope would be that, wherever he goes next, Shane will ride him.”

“You need a good horse to win a St Leger and you need to stay," O'Brien explained. "It's a tough race but Galileo Chrome has an unexposed profile and there could be more to come.

I still don't think Tiger Moth will run personally - or will maybe only run if something goes amiss with Santiago.

I think O'Brien expressed reservations over his stamina. His pedigree supports those reservations (siblings won over 6f and 1m and his half brother won over 5f). You can obviously argue conversely that he's already finished 2nd beaten only a head in a Group 1 over 12f.I think the other race AOB nominated for him is Leopardstown G3, 5.15pm on Saturday. AOB left Norway in the St Leger at this stage last season and he ran in and won the same Leopardstown race instead. Also, where has Tiger Moth been since the Irish Derby?

Of course, I'm no more successful than anyone else at second guessing the intentions of this outfit. Grin

At the moment AOB is intending to run 3 ie Santiago, Dawn Patrol and Mythical; Tiger Moth is heading either to an Irish race or France with Serpentine. Dettori has been booked, Kirby could be too.

If so, Dettori most likely on Santiago which would mean a new jockey for English King or the horse is France bound the following day.
Report impossible123 September 9, 2020 7:00 PM BST
English King was matched at 34 here. If so, Dettori can ride both Santiago (here) and him (Grand Prix de Paris) and also Stradivarius (Prix Foy) the following day.

12 have been declared including the main protagonists eg Santiago, Pyledriver and Hukum; Galileo Chrome and English King too with Marquand on board the latter. Dettori is riding at Donny, and probably will be confirmed for Santiago.

English King is still declared for the French race on sunday. The ground is good for here and France.

english king out of leger

Unbelievable! Why declared it yesterday when France was the preferred choice? The ground on both tracks is good. I think it reflects the immaturity, indecisiveness and insecurity of his trainer; just choose the most appropriate race for the horse.

And now, connections are trying to book Dettori. I hope AOB has already secured his service for Serpentine.

Shane Crosse the pilot of Galileo Chrome who's been well-backed last few days has tested positive for Covid and will now miss the race and the Irish Champion Festival.

Galileo Chrome will go off favourite at this rate!
Report impossible123 September 11, 2020 7:44 PM BST
I'll probably 'lay' Galileo Chrome for a place at 1.92; Santiago at 1.75 a definite back, I believe.
Report FELTFAIR September 12, 2020 11:44 AM BST
Backed Pyledriver after the Voltigeur at 8.2 and subsequently layed 4.2. So all green but Pyledriver is best for me. See Santiago as the main danger so may get involved in the place only market.
Report Figgis September 12, 2020 12:59 PM BST
I thought the Voltigeur fell apart around Pyledriver. The time was pretty ordinary. Not that it was a pace collapse, but I have his main opposition not running to their best. He did do a fair time when winning the King Edward Vii but that still leaves him short of winning an average Leger. The way he won last time he may be capable of more but I'll pass on him. Possibly one or two others may improve also, but for me the only horse who has already run fast enough to win an average Leger is Santiago. He hasn't had chance to show what kind of current form he is in but at the price I'll take the risk.
Report FELTFAIR September 12, 2020 1:02 PM BST
Backed Santiago place only at just under evens.
Report impossible123 September 12, 2020 2:15 PM BST
Galileo Chrome is 1.96 to 'lay' for a place; Pyledriver is 1.94 against Hukum. A double prospect.
Report ReaseHeath September 12, 2020 2:56 PM BST
Backed Hukum win and Mohican Heights ew.

Good luck!

A good race to watch. I think the winner Galileo Chrome will be a Gold Cup horse next season. He the 1st to come under pressure and outstayed the others; Pyledriver ran very well but probably did not stay the last 1f, I think.

driver well done however you'll be doomed restricted to pennies now.

Don't think we saw a future Conduit, Crystal Ocean or Stradivarius in that lot, but good to watch and well done GC backers.
