Howdy HK, hope all is well. Cool

Fantastic win for Able Friend giving lumps of weight away over a trip on the short side (6F) and drawn wide in barrier 14. He mowed down two very good horses in Gold Fun and Peniaphobia and shown that the nightmare trip to Ascot hasn't affected him one bit, which is great to see. Pace looked strong with Amber Sky going a good clip early on, set it up perfectly for the big fella. Went off a pretty big price as well, no betting here for any of the races!

Looking forward to all the International meetings coming up, especially the big one in December at Sha Tin. Happy

All good thanks Mr D, hope you're in good health!

It was a very good run considering his last effort (least said about that the better imo). Think Military Attack ran nicely too giving lumps of weight away, not convinced Contentment is the real deal at the moment as he was getting lots of weight but we'll see.

One I'm also interested in is Packing Pins, he's creeping up the rankings in the style of a very good horse, he's related to Aerovelocity but has been winning over 1400m, he may not be good enough to take on AF at 1600m, but then what is in HK so I'm wondering if they might be tempted to go 1200m, looking forward to when they really test him.

Trials are on 21st November so we'll get some more info then - do we know if Solow will be travelling over?

Very kind Uncle, I'm not too sure I agree with your sentiment though, I defer to MrD as more insightful than me - and plenty of others to boot.

Great stuff... all good here HK, I just need to improve my betting!!! Laugh

Too kind Uncle, you must have had a cocktail of drugs and booze Saturday night... and Sunday morning! I will take it though, very rare for me to get any kind of compliment. GrinWink

Don't be so harsh on yourself HK, you've pushed me in the right direction a number of times over the last few years!!! Cool

Have to agree HK regarding MA, he never runs a bad race and he showed he's still got that zest for racing. Off level weights it will be a different story and the race over a 8F should sharpen him up. I think Free Eagle might be coming over for the HK Cup, Japan was mentioned as well for him. Would love to see Winx race in the HK Cup, she was very impressive in the Cox Plate. Not sure what other Euro horses will be coming, I'm pretty sure I read Solow will be aimed at Dubai again next year for his next big race. Able Friend will have scared all the opposition away after his awesome performance yesterday, shame he had his melt down at Ascot!

For the HK Sprint I think Chautauqua will be the one, he's been super impressive this year in Australia and is getting better and better. After his Manikato Stakes romp connections mentioned they would like to take him to HK for the Sprint and then to Royal Ascot next year if all goes to plan. I thought Terravista would have progressed this year as well but he's been a tad disappointing since his Darley Classic win.

Chawuataquataqua certainly top of my list. Unfortunately Able Friend will be no kind of price in the mile.

Hello Fato - hope all is well with you too.....looking forward to some decent discussion and hopefully picking the winners too! Unfortunately the mile will be just a sit and watch race I think.....perhaps AOB could send Gleneagles, at least he'd get the ground he wants here Tongue Out

Hope Winx does turn up for the Cup, think she'd do a Snow Fairy.

New to this interesting thread and I recognise some of the Able Friend devotees from the one for the Queen Anne. Enough said on that sad matter. Could you guys advise me on whether Betfair have ante-post on the HK INTL races?

I don't recall seeing them on here in the past Madhu. Joe Koral are usually one of the first to price up.

Staphanos ran well today in the Tenno Sho Autumn (10F), had to race wide all the way from his high draw but stayed on really strongly to nab second... again! Cry

The winner Lovely Day had a dream run from his low draw but won well in the end, looked to be idling in front. Both are nominated for the HK Cup, Staphanos is a definite but I think Lovely Day will go for the Japan Cup next.

Another horse who ran well yesterday was Gailo Chop, the predicted rain came at Flemington and when the ground is on the Soft side GC is a different horse. Gritty performance from the front and fought back to win when looking like he was going to get swallowed up. He will be going for the HK Cup as well but the likely fast ground will not be in his favour, the Vase was also mentioned but I think the ground conditions will dictate which race he goes for!!

Agree Mr D - I'm doing a bit on the HK Sprinters to rank them, I have Gold Fun ahead at the moment as Aerovelocity had irregular heart beat and bled in the AF race and I'm not wholly convinced Peniaphobia is at the top of his game this season (yet). I wish they'd let Packing Pins go for the sprint as he's in the Mile but needs to go up a few points to get a nomination and there's nothing in the entries to worry AF.

Sad news regarding Aerovelocity HK!

I get the feeling the HK sprinters might be vulnerable this year, if the Australians turn up I think they will be very hard to beat especially Chautauqua. The Darley Classic is this Saturday at Flemington where the big guns clash again, Terravista might give Chautauqua something to think about back on a straight track but I will be surprised if he gets turned over like last year.

I agree re HK sprinters this year, suppose it depends on what happens on 21st Nov and if Peniaphobia can get up a notch. Hoping the Aussies turn up but they haven't in the past few years so we shall see. Need to do some work on the Japan entries, Straight Girl looks fairly decent.
By:
MrDinos
When: 01 Nov 15 14:20
Yep, we should have a better idea of the likely runners near the end of this month. Straight Girl ran well in the HK Sprint last year finishing a length behind Aerovelocity, she would have to be on the shortlist. Recently won the Sprinters Stakes as well with Rich Tapestry not far behind, I think the HK Sprint will be her swansong!

Watched the race live this morning, I thought Terravista was going to nail Chautauqua and the winner Delectation. The ground was on the Soft side and it looked like the closer you were to the stands side rail the better, this was a bit of an advantage for the winner. I think Terravista was the unlucky one in this race, drawn widest (1), he had to track all the way across to the stand side rail and that cost him in the end. Chautauqua also struggled to get cover from barrier 3. IMO Terravista should go for the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot next year, the straight track will be bang on for him.

Buffering wasn't that far behind these again and he finished nearly 4 lengths behind Aerovelocity in last years HK Sprint. Maybe the HK sprinters have nothing to fear after all!

Still siding with Gold Fun, but as we know the draw is the important factor (Lord K aside)

Is there any news on the European vase horses, can't see the locals getting near Flintshire again if he comes but at the prices on offer so far either Helene horse ew is better value than Dominant at 3-1 as there's nothing between them on recent form.
By:

Flintshire earmarked for Japan , not easy to go on to HK and double up given quarantine constraints interfering with foreign raiders training regime so remains to be seen if he shows up in HK again. Free Eagle will go to either Japan or HK with the Vase a strong possibility.

RP reported today Esoterique is going to take on Able Friend in the HK Mile. She finished a few lengths in front of him at Royal Ascot... I doubt she will at Sha Tin. Devil

Looks like Criterion is going to have another crack at the HK Cup!

I think Free Eagle would be better suited going for the HK Cup rather than the Vase or Japan Cup, I'm still not convinced 12F is his trip!
By:

When: 09 Nov 15 19:18
Criterion definitely interests me in the cup, think he's a very decent performer and in the absence of evidence from the home team so far, bar military attack, you'd have to think he'll be on the shortlist - will all be a little clearer after 21st Nov.

2 that interest me at the available uk prices for the trial races today (note Sha tin is Saturday this week) - in the sprint not listentome and super jockey - think they'll both run well. Today could also be packing pins big race - not suggesting he'll beat AF but think this is his big target today and he'll be at 100% whereas others are just being fine tuned.

Listened to the races live this morning via the HKJC Radio stream, I couldn't get your Link to work HK, I think the footage could only be watched by Hong Kong/China residents!

Military Attack put in another fine effort and won a shade cosy IMO. He did get weight from Blazing Speed but still won well enough for me, if he gets a good low draw he will be on the short list... again! It will be interesting to see what international runners turn up for the HK Cup.

Able Friend was nowhere near his best today and looked to run a bit flat, maybe his powerful sprint performance last time took more out him than it first looked. You were spot on about Packing Pins HK, he didn't seem to get the 8F trip and maybe he's one of those horses that falls between two stools.

With Chautauqua ruled out because of a minor injury, Gold Fun looks the likely and worthy favourite now. He put in another solid effort today, Peniaphobia gave him a good race off level weights and I can see these two slugging it out again in a few weeks. My old pal Lucky Nine ran a cracker from a long, long way back, closest at the finish. He got weight from the top two but I loved the way he picked up and ran on all the way to the line... I can see me having one last sentimental bet on Lucky, hopefully at a massive price. Grin

That's a shame about the stream.

Think the final nominations are announced on Weds night at Happy Valley, from yesterday I'd take Blazing Speed from the 2000m race, but I'm not convinced the home players are good enough to beat Criterion if he comes, nice run from MA and showed he still has the battle in him. I did like the runs from both Helene horses as trials for the cup race but Dominant's run also looked ominous and should put him spot on, I still think the Helene horses are better value based on there not being much between them.

I think the sprint is definitely Gold Fun's if he gets a draw, yesterday all day the on pace runners fared best and to come from where he did to win was a very good run, I know most will take Peniaphobia out of the race using a lot of gas up being drawn 11 but Gold Fun was still impressive from missing the break. I agree with L9 too but he was also getting 5lb from the first 2 and I don't think he's quite up to it anymore - will also look at Straight Girl as the one from the overseas runners.

I have had some conversations the past week about AF in the mile, he wasn't suited by the track yesterday but don't think it was JM's best ride either and take it on level weights and he'd have won- I'm also of the opinion that AF, when he's faced top class opposition, has been beaten and it looks like he could be facing better opposition this year so he needs to up his game (there were excuses both times but it is 2 from 2)- I may oppose him as I think the prices on the day for Toormore etc will be too big to resist.

Not long to go now

P.S. Mr D - the horse I have a share in runs next week hopefully, he's coming on nicely apparently and will get a run over hurdles in to see where we are.

Military Attack connections think the 5lb he got made the difference so maybe I was wrong thinking he won a shade cosy! There has never been that much between the two but Military Attack has had his health issues over the last couple of years but he seems to be OK at the moment and was in front of BS off level weights in the Sha Tin Trophy (8F). Both will come on again for the run but agree with you HK, they both could be vulnerable to an international runner... no Free Eagle in the HK Cup is the big surprise for me!! If Staphanos is a double figure price he will be my EW play but I've noticed PP have Blazing Speed at 12-1 at the moment which is nearly double the price of Military Attack, that has to be the value call at the moment.

Gold Fun will be very hard to beat now and the race doesn't look like being the strongest renewal with no Aussies... spot on about the pace bias as well HK. I will not be able to resist having a small EW bet on Lucky Nine, even with all the negatives... and there are a lot!!! Laugh

The international runners will be more confident after watching Able Friend's subdued effort Saturday but he's still odds on over here. I personally think he was under cooked by a fair amount for the race, John Moore has done this before with his runners including Able Friend.

Cheers for the update HK, I will keep a look out for him. Cool

Mr D - John Moore said on Friday that AF was near enough at his peak for this run, maybe he was wrong or the track didn't suit, but you'd still expect him to beat that field. JM did give them a massive start, he'll not be able to do that in Dec against better oppisition, perhaps last season and the travel had taken note out of him than was thought. I'm not suggesting he's finished or over inflated, wonder if something just isn't right. A friend had a conversation with someone close to the horse last week and asked if he was up there with the best he's seen - the response was interesting, providing he stays sound he could be. Running on GF ground for almost every run for such a big horse will take its toll.
By:
MrDinos
When: 22 Nov 15 15:29
The way he mowed down two very good sprinters and gave away lumps of weight a few weeks ago makes me think he's still got the ability. The two he beat, Gold Fun and Peniaphobia both ran very well yesterday and that form looks solid, so it was a massive surprise how AF performed. John Moore did state that AF broke 22 seconds coming home so maybe the race just didn't go to plan, which started with him being slow out the gate. The HK Mile will be an interesting race to watch but I wouldn't be confident backing any of them at the moment.

I noticed Real Steel is in the HK Vase betting now, he was going to be my bet for the Japan Cup!

Mr D - after watching the mile trial again I have to say I was impressed with DOR, he looks like he's coming into form nicely after his operation and wasn't really knocked about too much but made up a lot of ground in the final 200m.

By:

Yep, it was good prep race (speed work) for DOR HK but will this race come too soon for him?! He's flying under the radar a bit, there wasn't much mentioned about him in the media or on Twitter after the race. We both know his record at Sha Tin over 10F is fantastic so he will be another that will be hard to rule out, I just have some doubt whether he will be 100% for the race. I will see what John Moore has to say during the week of the race before I make my mind up... he's 3-1/4-1 2nd favourite over here HK.

I agree with you Stellar, if Free Eagle did run he would be the one to beat but he's not in the betting for the HK Cup on Oddschecker. If you go by that he will not be running in the HK Cup which is very surprising IMO, as posted before I'm still not convinced 12F is what he wants!

We'll know on Weds night who is where and can then really make up, or confuse further, our minds. Not too sure i'd have DOR at 2nd fav.
