An Olympian ...great sportswoman but a dreadful dancer. Normally id laugh at someone taking up such a challenge but there is no laughing matter about Victoria Pendleton as she proved today on the 14/1 shot short head. That start is what she needs ... not a fairy tale win... she needs to understand that the uncertainty of how a race unfolds, the element of timing and the most important bit - knowing your horse. Mix those ingredients and a bit of luck you can get a horse over the line.
That second will sit with her for months... as she will pick out the lessons learnt from it... and she will train as hard as ever... as she is the most committed athlete you will get. No disrespect to jockeys but not many will be able to match her fitness, for her a lot will depend on horseman skills and today there is no argument she is progressing.. 6 months away think she will be tighter .. lower and more astute than she is now, as her learning is definitely not complete, but she is much further progressed than I could have imagined.
If she continues to progress and she catches the attention of a trainer who has prepared a horse specifically for the race in mind then 66/1 to win Foxhunters at betfreds is worth a bet, I'm sure some trainers would love to snap her up for the big day and wont be surprised if she is on a leading fancy... and the big picture is it will be a massive boost for racing.
Seems to me she's a publicity seeker. Joining Strictly despite being a garbage dancer showed her desperation and this foxhunter aim seems like more of the same.

Victoria Pendleton to ride in the 2016 Cheltenham Festival Foxhunter Chase
Worth covering your win stake with this... I cant imagine her not racing in the Foxhunters.

Sorry, the string was just entitled Foxhunters. I didn't know which one she was aiming for when I replied about Aintree. My comments would be the same for Cheltenham.

Very nice price now if anyone had the courage to take it. Still a very big ask against the best amateurs and if Long Run turns up fit and well he should laugh at them.

Long Run has to qualify 1st, hasnt got long to fit 2 races in, 3 if anything goes wrong and they dont want to run it on heavy ground.

Dropping like flies in this race aren't they. Given that there will be a max field, is it 18? How many of them will actually have a chance of a place? And given that Pendleton has been promised a more than capable horse in Pacha Du Polder as long as the partnership continues then the 10/1 to finish in the first 3 and 33/1 for the win by koral last week is proving to be massive never mind the 66s you lot got last summer

I don't know koikeeper, but 33s the win and 10s the first 3 was too big seeing as the horse is only 25s. I don't have any doubts VP can last the distance, however the horse is a different matter

She has looked weak imo and they reckon she needs at lead another 10 rides before chelt, hopefully one in a Hunter Chase.

I wouldn't crab its last run under rules personally. 10 lengths behind Moroman and Paint the Clouds who if am not mistaken was sent off fav' for last years foxhunters
That race was 3m 3f, just a 1f shorter than the foxhunters at the fez, no i think if you have bagged any of them special bets i.e the 33/1 for the win and 10/1 to finish in the first three think you got a nice bet there given the all likelyhood of VP being offered a fair few rides between now and the fez for experience and the trainer (being close to Nichols ahem) is a good thing imo.
Can't see PDP winning or beating On the Fringe, but if a scrap for the minor placings ensues as is often the case in this race, PDP am sure wont be too far away from it especially with the likes of Long Run and Prince de Beauchene non runners

Im not involved in this and do think its a bit (?) of a publicity stunt but have to say she was unlucky and got clattered by the other horse. Takes some bottle to ride in a NH race and whilst I think for her own safety she should steer clear of Cheltenham she has the ability to win one of these on the right horse.

The jockeys she would be up against at Cheltenham would have sat on that betilyerded. I'm all for her and what she's doing and think it's a positive for the sport but I just can't see how they could let her ride at the Festival. It's the 20th February and that was her only ride under rules. Next year maybe.

"It was just an unfortunate incident. She got unseated and that's happened to us all. She's got to look at it and learn from it and gain experience. She is a novice rider and has done very well in a short time, but she's got to keep on learning. I think the team will have a look at it and it's a possibility we might find another hunter chase for Pacha in ten days' time and she needs a clear round to get to Cheltenham. She'll learn from and it was just an unfortunate incident. "I'd be lying if I said I was reasonably happy and she'd probably say the same because you don't want an incident like yesterday going to Cheltenham. I do think we need to run again somewhere and get a clear round. Pacha could go to Wincanton and if we can get everything to go right, fine. Between us all we're going to sit down and have a talk about it and make sure we do the right thing and I'm well aware of that. If she can get a nice clear round then we'll be back on track."

Youre right Pjay but thats my point. I think its easy for us sat at home to say the things that have been said about her and basically slag her and take the p**s. I dont think she is capable of getting around Cheltenham never mind be involved. I always think they go a million miles an hour in the Foxhunters as half of them have no control over their mounts so it would be a seat of the pants job.
I do, however, think she is competent enough to win a race such as that one yesterday with a clear round. Its hypothesising to say who would and who wouldnt have stayed on the horse yesterday but some possibly would, many wouldnt.
Be interesting to see how she gets on at Wincanton as it would appear to be last chance saloon for her there.

And for that reason she shouldn't be let ride there betilyerded. It's no disaster if she doesn't make it. It shows how difficult a job it is. Put her in front of the Channel 4 cameras telling the public how hard it is. Let her come back next year. She loves what she's doing and it looks like she is very keen to keep doing it.
And I'm not slagging her or taking the piss. Racing is a closed door too often. Try anything new and it will be condemned, despite the sport slowly but surely eroding. I welcome what she's doing and think it's a great idea. It's a pity she didn't get a weekly diary or something in one of the main newspapers to spread the word further. Racing is losing it's connection with the public and anything like this can only be a plus.

I wasnt suggesting you were taking the piss Pjay but many others are on other threads. My initial post was in response to the ROFL post by Kenco which is pointless. The rear view camera shows the other horse's hind leg kicked her foot out of the stirrup - bet it was feckin sore more than anything else.
See Smith Eccles has come out and said pretty much the same as we are in that she should wait a year. Im not sure her sponsors would agree and probably not Pendleton herself (as she proabably has something else lined up in a jungle somewhere!)
Lets see what happens next week

It's a publicity stunt waiting to backfire. The media are pushing her into riding at Cheltenham and presumably she's taking the bookies' money to do it. It's up to her what she does as it's her neck on the line and she's the one putting herself at risk of breaking it. I've got nothing against her but if anything goes wrong it's her own fault for getting involved in all this media cr@p. Racing will do anything for publicity nowadays.

You seem to be suggesting she has no choice and she's being forced into this. I can assure you, VP is a very confident, self assured and ' driven' young lady. She is very committed to what she does and is a ' winner ' . I'm sure she's well aware of her abilities and the risks involved in what she's undertaking. I for one, admire her and wish her well in her endeavours.

She isn't upto the standard yet to go round at Cheltenham.
The unseat in the last race was pretty poor and she should have been able to stay on its back.
But there's always next year if she puts the graft in and gains a lot more experience in P2P and lower level foxhunter chase's.

think the same as John Francome and Sint, jockeys are born and bred into their sport. Racing if you don't know what you are doing is a very dangerous sport. Hope she will be ok and the press are delighted just hope she dosen't get injured.

It is reported on the other side that the lady fell off again. If true I would expect a sensible chap like Paul Nicholls to pull the plug on the venture. I certainly hope so.

I think what we are all missing is the fact that the OP put this up at 66-1 and her mount is now a general 16-1 shot.
So if nothing else well done and I hope you get a good run for your money.

Bloody good effort and could easily have run into a place. Im not particularly a fan of hers but you cant fault the effort and commitment so a big well done to her and Iris should feel a little unlucky that she wasnt in the money.

As someone against the idea, credit where due, that was a stunning effort, very well ridden.
There are quite a few jocks that could learn from that, giving the horse time to settle, amazing how well it jumped and travelled, food for thought if some horses were left alone, for just a little longer.

Massive shame there was no fairytale ending - but in reality when looking at the ride I do feel it was a bit too safe... She was careful ... She wanted to get round ... And past events clearly playing on her mind ...
I think the journey she took was amazing - the pressure she faced must have been enormous and the barrage of criticism was unfair and in the end she probably took the right approach...
But to achieve what she has achieved in one season is phenomenal - I think she is an amazing woman and has bought something special to racing...

It must be hard for a sportsperson to develop a new career after leaving their sport. Not everyone is suited to management, coaching or journalism. The sense of purpose she got from this must have outweighed the risks for her. Her focus and dedication have been outstanding from the beginning and it has now given her an entry into a new career which isn't focussed on bikes.
The upside for the sport we love has been immense. It will help counter the negative impact of the bad news we often get (for example, the sad number of fatalities this week) and get over to a wider public (especially women and younger people) how exciting and enjoyable the game can be.
Also, although her ride was cautious, she got a great result out of a horse which had previously shown its best form at much shorter distances.
By the way, I don't blame Francome or Smith-Eccles for expressing their concerns - I am just pleased that they were wrong this time.
IrisI agree completely. It must be hard for a sportsperson to develop a new career after leaving their sport. Not everyone is suited to management, coaching or journalism. The sense of purpose she got from this must have outweighed the risks for her.

I'm in Dubai and just managed to watch the race highlights on Youtube. AP mccoy or Ruby Walsh would have won on that horse. Pendleton is a poor excuse for a jockey.
