totally disagree - Large Action/Flakey Dove have the same form as many of the others going into the race - he went on to greatness thats the point of the Betfair hurdle its a good indicator of potential ... with the prospect of a full field, there will be one or two that may be worth following in the season ahead - in either the handicap or Supreme or maybe a Champion hurdle? (not sure of CH though!)  ... but probably worth saving that judgement til after the race...

btw This is a marked improvement from last weeks race at Sandown...

Sign of a Victory big chance off top weight. Can't remember the last time the top weight in this wasn't rated over 150. Has it ever even happened?

Don't mind Henderson saying the ground won't suit. There is absolutely ZERO evidence that the horse must have good ground. Going by the horses action and breeding he is in fact much more likely to PREFER softer going. The biggest problems this horse will have are: 1. Will he settle? 2. The fact that Geraghty will have him 6 horses wide all the way round. 3. Because Geraghty & Henderson have decided he doesn't like the ground and has it all to do with top weight, will Geraghty even bother riding him properly? Remember Oscar Whisky in the Paddy Power? They went into that race with the exact same fears they have for this race and as a result Geraghty didn't really even try to win when the horse would certainly have won if given a chance from 3 out rather than just trying to win up the run in. Forgot he was in a race there that day. If Geraghty can't come there on the bit after the last then I can see him giving up. Must take this into consideration if backing the horse.

Overall CALIPTO is certainly the most solid. Sure to be on the premises.

Both Ferguson horses have a chance also as does the Quinn horse by Kings Theatre.

Backed Bordoni in the Galway Hurdle (tweeted that) and lto (site), feel there is a race in him so was always going to follow him. Feel BallyBolly is sneaking in, NTD targets this race and the Dec Gold Cup every year. Also Noc put a good case in his email and I've massive respect for his opinions.

But as tweeted Goodwood is my main bet e/w. I also think Sign of a Victory may be the classy horse here, need him onside.

£30 e/w Goodwood 25/1
£20 Sign of a Victory 12/1
£5 Bordoni 100.0
£5 Ballybolly 36.0
Report CVByrne February 7, 2015 12:37 AM GMT
Alleged, there isn't just one horse who is value in a big handicap, there are many. The differing stake levels of the backable horses accounts for how much I fancy their chances in relation to their price. Dig up last years betfair hurdle thread and see who my main pick was and who my secondary one was.

Noc asked me to do an analysis on more than one bet in the same race and it came out as more profitable to not stick to one bet than to force yourself to just back one. After all £5 @ 100.0 on a horse you believe should be in the 20/1 region is always worth it.
Report gamerawins February 7, 2015 3:20 AM GMT
I make it even money that Henderson, Nicholls or Ferguson will win it. Vasco du Ronceray will not win it, so that leaves four horses @ evens v the field.

I'm absolutely certain that if you ran this a million times one of those 4 would win it 500k times.

I always respect your opinion CV and agree with you that NTD's horse has a squeak. Can't be having Goodwood Mirage though. He looks like a typical Jeremy to me i.e. flattering to deceive. With the exception of Our Conor, the Jeremy offspring are very disappointing. GM looks a typical dog to me. A solid lay on the place market imo.

Gl all.
Report timtin February 7, 2015 4:22 AM GMT
Made my final shortlist for this very competitive field(in random order):

1. VASCO DU RONCERAY has standout form being pitched at the highest level last seasons. His soft ground form looks very good being 7 lenghts behind Far West 2 seasons ago and beating last time out De Boitron by 5 lengths. Has a useful 3lb claimer on board and I see him getting involved @ E/W at 33/1

2. LIGHTENTERTAINMENT has climbed the ladder steadily but surely. His wins are by short margins however last time out he was in front of both Dell Arca and Royal Irish Hussar(admittedly receiving chunks of weights from them) but the handicapper only put him 5 pounds up for that. Its incredible to think he's still capable of more after already improving 34 pounds from the end of last season but I admit I don't know why but he always seem to find a bit more when put against better company. This one will either be in front at the finish or will finally get exposed and finish way down the line so WIN only @ 20/1

3. AMORE ALATO is a consistent type bar the aintree novices hurdle in which something went amiss. Has a very interesting form line behind Irving on level weights and also on todays soft ground. The 7lb claimer could be of huge help however she needs to get the fractions right up front, otherwise will finish out of placings. WIN only @ 25/1

4. CHIEFTAIN´S CHOICE was impressive on his last outings, handicapper penalised him 7 lb but could still have lots in hand considering his famous sire has produced so many top quality jumpers. He puts his best foot forward on soft conditions and is a live contender. Nice value as well @ 16/1 E/W

My betting revolves around these big handicaps and so far have nailed the winner in almost 80% of the races over the last 12 months. I agree that the best plan is to find value, a horse that hasnt shown its hand or on the basis of a recent win is still underestimated and back 3 or 4 at double figure odds or lump on one at single odds eg if in doubt, tea for two etc

Anyway on this race Im on these so good luck all

Kipper.....Do you know the stable?

Long been been admirer of this trainer,he does really well with limited ammunition, surprised he does not get more talent from bigger owners.
As mentioned before, always worth looking at those in behind, few got hampered and theres a couple that would certainly have been closer, staying on well once their chance had gone, cheltenian looks good yardstick.

Sign of a Victory entered for Kingwell @ Wincanton next Saturday. Would seem to indicate that he was pulled out for ground/weight concerns last week.

Absolutely unbelievably stupid. Henderson is a genius and one of the best trainers ever. He sure knows how to get a horse ready, but when it comes to the finer points of the handicap system and the effects of weight he really knows nothing. He would rather be off levels against horses of the same rating or higher than give a few pounds to inferior animals. If you are well handicapped you are well handicapped and top weight on what was good ground will not negate that, especially against much weaker opposition. Not to mention that the pace was so much more likely to be fast in the Betfair than in what will be a 4 or 5 runner race next Saturday. This horse is much better in a big field with a fast pace so he can settle. Also the ground is likely to be softer @ Wincantion. The ground @ Newbury was bordering on good as evidenced by the times for the day. Also there was of course zero evidence to begin with that SOAV needs it good as he is actually bred to prefer it soft.

Honestly, this was just so incredibly stupid by Henderson. That is a Paddy Power and now a Betfair Hurdle they have thrown away this season due to having little clue about the handicap system and being obsessed with beliefs from 20 or 50 years ago that weight means everything and casting it in stone with little or no evidence that horses have specific ground requirements. Stuck in the dark ages.

More pertinent is the fact The Master of Seven Brandies continues to employ Andrew Tinkler as a "jockey" at his yard. Said passenger will apparently be getting the leg up on Saturday on SOAV. Always amazes me how the best trainers can be the poorest judges of jockeys: Gosden (Mckay/Havlin), Cecil (Queally), Nicholls (Schofield) etc.

Fair enough I went on a bit of a rant there. I just find it so difficult to understand how someone so obviously gifted could be so blind in some areas.

@ Workforce: I agree re; above jocks, particularly Schofield (e.g. the ride he gave Rolling Aces in the Grand Sefton was incredible, he totally left it behind by sitting up on the horse from 4 out and only riding a race after the last). I also consider D Jacob to be far superior to STD. Sure Jacob showed a lot of immaturity especially after the Southfield Theatre ride at Cheltenham. Can't behave like that in a big job, not to mention that that kind of immaturity will spill into other areas. But as a pilot I would have him ahead of STD any day when my money is down. Overall Nicholls made a mistake imo

Strange what bad judges of jockeys Gosden, Nicholls,Cecil etc. Joke?
