There could be worst bets. 134 winners this season from 188 horses to have represented the stable. Just about his best ever season and he'll start the next one with More of That, Taquin Du Seuil, Holywell and Shutthefrontdoor all proven performers at Grade 1 level (or, in the last named case the potential to be one). With Nicholls looking to lack star names (although everyone said that this season) and Henderson's two stellar performers facing uncertain futures, the race may be more open than in recent times. O'Neill has never made any secret of the fact that a title remains an ambition and one could easily see McManus getting even more behind him if a challenge materialised. His stable is resurgent, lacks nothing in financial backing and will doubtless establish a clear lead before the autumn, particularly with Nicholls stating that he's only got around 15 summer jumpers this year. At attractive odds, a punt on O'Neill could yield plenty of fun.

Has anywon priced this up?

Remember the trainers' championship is decided on prize money, not number of wins, so summer jumping really does not matter very much at all. Paul Nicholls had a poor season by his own lights, yet won roughly three times as much prize money as O'Neill.

No, he didn't Ramruma. He won £2.5m as opposed to O'Neill's £1.6m. My point is that O'Neill's quality, going forward, may start to match his quantity and the season coming could just be his year.

Grand National prize money could make a big difference, appreciate Nicholls will have candidates but for Jonjo you think Shutthefrontdoor and Merry King straight away.

I think he will have a chance next season too - AP has said as much and also, tellingly, that Jonjo himself is starting to believe in the possibility.

When will it be priced up though? If it is n't until the season 'proper' starts in October, any value might have gone if Jonjo has a lead at that point.

OK point taken. I'm not sure I'll be following you in though.
